I really like when during the door domino part she says "a light wind blows" when we can visually see it's a literal tornado. Feels like it speaks a lot to how no matter what she faces that she tells herself it's not that bad and tries to undersell her self and her accomplishments.

It's so great, honestly! Like how the last door is her glowing door, meaning everything in the end is up to her. Plus, in the visuals it actually gets blown away, with her thinking 'what if I just don't, what if I did not have to do that. Then they are in the sky, where everything is pink, fluffy and cute with her singing light and smiling even the donkeys are unicorns. It's so thought through!

I also find it cool that the "Titanic" has the family name on the side, so coupled with the lyrics, it's saying that the family chooses not to change or shift despite all the signs of oncoming danger or disaster, forcing her to have to do her best to take on the danger before her family hits it.

It also kinda shows how dependent the family and the town became on luisa. The ship didnt chance the course, because they know luisa will destroy the ice berg. So luisa HAS to break it, so that the ship doesnt sink, even though the ship was absolutly capable of chancing the course. The town can solve at lot of problems by themselfes or prevent problems (like keeping the church where it was, or building it in the correct spot in the first place), but decides not to because "luisa will fix it" This film captures this spiral so well, its amazing. Luisa fixes problems, because she can. People notice and ask for help with problems they couldnt solve. Now they dont bother looking for solutions or doing their work properly because they have luisa. Luisa HAS to solve those problems as well, even though they where easily avoidable, because no one else can fix them after they where done and she got used to it, not noticing how much it burned her out

"Under the surface I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" This is such a hard hitting line for me. She uses so many metaphors in this song, we get so many visualisations. But this line is so raw. No interpretations, no comparisons, just a brutally straight and honest confession.

This is basically every family member who has a gift; just expected to preform perfectly. Isabelle has "appearing perfect" almost perfectly down, which is one of the reasons why the grandmother seems to likes her the most. The other is that she looks a lot like how the grandmother looked when she was younger, and seeing this handsome young man show interest in her granddaughter reminds her of her perfect romance with her eventual husband, and she both wants that for her granddaughter and to re live those memories and make sure it goes perfectly and stays perfect, trying to make up for what happened to her own perfect relationship. The unreasonable part is that Isebella doesn't like being perfect, nor does she like or even want to marry her fiancé to be. But bc it was deemed the best for the family, the best relationship, she was going to go along with it. All the adults in her family have marriages full of love, and, based on appearances, she was so close to being put in a loveless marriage, all to just make her grandmother happy. Generational drama man.

You missed the "Give it to your Sister" double/triple. She literally means give your sister all the burdens, because she is older; which we also see in the visuals. However, by saying it the way she does: "give it to your sister, your sister's older"; it becomes another saying altogether. I love the donkeys as Luisa’s symbol. Donkeys are a beast of burden, a work animal known for carrying heavy loads. Donkeys in Colombia even have their own festival day as a sort of ‘thank you’ for the hard-work that donkeys do, especially in agriculture. They dress the donkeys in costumes (a unicorn wouldnt be out of place). I get the feeling Luisa doesn’t even get that one day of praise for her efforts. No matter what’s going on in the song, that’s always there in the background. It even invades her fantasy of relaxation. It serves as comedic but also as a reflection of how in sync she is to that role in various scenes.

I also love how the intensity of the music builds as she reveals everything she has been keeping inside, and you expect a major drop or boom of sound to signify her just exploding from it all, but it gets soft because she stays quiet and bears the weight, not willing to let anyone notice how much she is suppressing. Also, weight smothers you. Someone else had pointed out in another comment section that when the mood in song changes, it is after Luisa sees that Maribel is frightened either by the things around her or the struggle of her sister, so she starts using more exciting music, brighter colors, playful donkeys, and dance moves to distract from the serious things she is saying. The ending shows it the best.

one of the fine details that always gets me is that in the verse about carrying all the family burdens she actually has a strain to her voice and literally cracks when she says "pop" on the 2nd or 3rd line. it just puts a huge amount of emphasis on how much the pressure is affecting her and just how close she is to her limit.

I love "We don't talk about Bruno" (Mostly Delores's part), but "Surface pressure" is my favorite song from the song track. As a older sister myself, I relate a lot to the pressure of that typical "Your the older one, you need to this.." or "You have to be a better example for your younger sister" and it really put this strain on me, especially when I was younger and told myself I shouldn't cry in front of my sister as the oldest when my dad passed away or took the brunt of the mental abuse that my mom's friend dished out to me and my younger sister. I was, and still am struggling with depression and anger issues, and I always feel like I'm such a disappointing big sister. I really love this song and the movie is just amazing and one of my favorite animated Disney movies since Frozen (The first one, not the second one, but "Into the unknown" is a pop tho).

This song is dope. And I really like the end being like multiple shots at her in the instrumentation. The french version couldn't really translate nicely the feeling of "no cracks no breaks no mistake no pressure" so it added an even deeper lyric in my opinion that I was surprise wasn't in the original version. Basically the last line in french say "but there's one thing I want to ask you: what is it like living without pressure ?" It was an interesting answer to Mirabel finding her sisters' life better when in fact they kind of envy her too. It's still understandable in the movie as a whole but I really like that added sentence.
@gryphonvert
@gryphonvert 2 жыл бұрын
That is so cool to hear! I read something a little bit ago about how much work goes into preparing the song lyrics for different languages, because of having to translate various idioms and slang from English, into something that hits the same for the people who speak other languages. And of course, translations are almost never 1:1. I would love to watch a much longer look, focusing on one song like this (or "Bruno"), that tackled some of that process in detail.

It is also interesting that Donkeys are the creatures with the most pressure on their backs in most farms (speaking as a Latina, personally.) Donnkeys are the animals that works the most, pulling cards and heavy burdens, while horses are most used for mount and cattle-work. Donkeys are your everyday burden relievers. So, it is interesting to see in her song, where she sings about having to work, about pressure, about being of service with so many Donkeys around backing her up on it.

There is an old saying in Latin (by Ovid, I believe?), about how 'Stone yields to water [or is hollowed out by it]; not through strength but by falling often' - something I feel this song so beautifully encapsulated! The line is actually “The ship doesn’t swerve; has it heard how big the iceberg is?”, with the second part being a question. I think that highlights the interpretation that the ship is her family/town blindly charging into danger, because they trust Luisa to save them. And Luisa is left to wonder why they didn’t do anything to prevent this problem themselves. But your interpretation definitely fits the theme.

As someone who's shouldered a lot for their siblings, mother, and myself at once, the look she gives Mirabelle at the end when it slows down for the last 'pressure like a drip drip drip that'll never stop' is so sad and telling of what she's trying to shoulder that I cried.

On 11:55 I could honestly feel this as apart of anxiety due to expectations. Mostly because it comes after the part of the song where Luisa wants to find joy and comfort. You free yourself from expectations for one time during your life and when you do it'll come back growing. "Why did you stop being better for them?", "Why did you stop at being what you're forced to do". And the fact that there's only just asmall part where she's just happy kinda shows one thing: that you will barely find comfort and happiness if you want to achieve the expectations of others Edit: I also like how in the middle of 12:11 and 12:12 you see Luisa covering her face from Mirabel when she saw her feeling the weight of the rocks. It's like saying that she's fine and is trying to hide it away

Something that I think we see in the song that I've never really seen someone fully address in the song is how in the whole song we constantly see Luisa protecting her little sister Mirabel because she feels like as the strongest she needs to protect everyone, we even see Luisa care for mirabel all the way down to fixing her glasses for her. Then during the part of the song we can finally see Luisa relaxed, we see mirabel trying to grab her own glasses and trying to stay on the donkeys back by herself. And I feel like this really showcases how a lot of her stress comes from need to constantly defend her entire family and how she wishes her family could defend themselves so that she wouldn't have to for once... that's what I got from that part at least if that makes any sense.

The donkey's are used throughout the song. Even in the arena when she's fighting Cerberus the Donkey's are the audience. I think the reason they in particular are used, in stead of any other common animal is that they are a beast of burden. Many communities use their ability to carry heavy loads in order to thrive. But in the movie, Luisa herself is carrying half a dozen donkeys on her back. Symbolizing that she is being used a a beast of burden even above and beyond the literal beasts. Doing the work of many donkeys without question.

10:24 Interestingly, though, the Titanic actually *did* try to swerve, just far too late. If the Titanic had hit the ice berg head-on as shown here, it likely wouldn't've sank. Rather, it sank *because* it swerved too late. The side of the hull struck the ice berg, ripping open too many compartments and causing too much flooding for the ship to sustain. Had it struck head-on, the only compartment that would've flooded is the forward-most one (though, there is a chance the compartment right behind it could've also taken in water). It's basically just like what happened to the Costa Concordia. Schettino noticed they were far too close to the shore way too late and tried to take evasive actions. Unfortunately, that combined with the helmsman's linguistic struggles sent the ship's side directly into the rocks they were trying to avoid. Had they struck the rocks head-on, the Concordia wouldn't've sank, just like the Titanic and that ice berg. Both of these major cruise liner incidents being exactly 100 years apart is certainly unnerving, to say the least...

This songs message also means that we all need to support each other without trying to hold each other to unrealistic expectations. This takes off a lot of that day to day pressure we're all under in life. In the military as Sargent we try not to make our soldiers do something that we can't do ourselves because when and if they fail we already know what to do to help them succeed the next time they're tried. We break them down only to build them and their confidence back up even stronger. Love this song.
