Crucibles are used all over in the steel, brass non-ferrous metal industries. But for most non-ferrous technical metals (aluminum, magnesium, titanium, manganese...) there really is no alternative of getting the metal from the ore by the use of electricity. Unfortunately smelting of the ores requires also very high temperatures, meaning you can't use copper for the smelting electrodes, which is why almost all electrodes for technical metal smelting are also made out of graphene & required to be so (the only option would be metals like tungsten, but it's not quiet good enough at conducting electricity).

90% of that task should be automated, for better yield and quality control. People here seems to love hard working, but I think industrial progress never comes with just "hard work". People have always worked dying hard for last 2000 years. And we should not forget what got us here. It's intelligence, cooperation and long term plans.

In the UK jobs have been automated and we have a huge underclass who are unable to attain a skill and fall into crime and drug dependency. Much of our manufacturing is outsourced from overseas and we have a poor economy. The benefactors are the wealthy at the top of the pile as usual.

I remember graphite from my time in the Royal Danish Army; the LMG´s (Light machine guns) used it for lubrication while we, who only had rifles, was not allowed to use it, it was too expensive they said. I guess the kind of graphite these gentlemens are working with here are of a different grade or the Danish army was just cheap, most likely the last option.
