Congratulations on reaching your 40k milestone. Didn't realise. I hope your 50k special will include multiplayer games of all sorts with Millie. Always enjoyed watching your 50Hz vs 60Hz (PAL vs NTSC) comparison videos. Regarding this video, the change in tone at 0:23. All your intros are amusing. Oh dear regarding how expensive the PAL 32x is. Good thing you had a backup plan. 1:22 didn't see that coming, but that was funny. That was fascinating to go in depth with the hardware aspect comparison with the Mega Drive/Genesis and 32x. Also the fact more is displayed at the bottom with those extra 16 pixels in height in the PAL version, sweet. Now I understand why there's a tougher decision to choose either frames over picture quality, and vice versa. Knuckles Chaotix pass the music sync test, like in Sonic 2. That ending was totally unexpected.

The PAL version has one advantage up its sleeve you forgot to mention. Knuckles Chaotix has a lot of slowdown compared to the Mega Drive titles, and alongside a PAL console sporting a faster DMA and VDP1, the 50Hz framerate could help to actually mask the sluggish performance!

I actually love Chaotix! Very experimental but it had a charm once you knew how to work the band physics. 😂 And at least we had AN original Sonic game on the 32x. 😉 Great video btw! 🙂

Game is RIPE for some modding. The music and visual design are on point, but the levels are an absolute mess. Redoing the level layouts would leave you with a fantastic game.

Absolutely, like the rubber-banding element is brilliantly done, but the level design is the opposite of what it needs. Also this is one hell of a frustratingly fun two-player game, like it's a whole different experience.

I'm so excited, I've got an Anbernic RG-350P and Retroarch was just updated for it to include direct support for 50Hz games! There are so many C64 games that have the opposite problem, developed in and for PAL territories and therefore run too fast on NTSC... now I can finally enjoy those games without weird refresh rate issues!

Congrats on 40k subs. You should consider doing ''Sonic 3D Flickies' Island'' 50Hz vs 60Hz which throws a spanner in the works. A game made in a 50Hz region.

Let demos of Sonic 3D blast were shown at E3, so the fame would have runned at 60Hz. I suspect it was designed in 60hz, and optimised in 50hz (the game detects which one to use). This could be an opportunity for RHS to speak to Jon Burton about it. He's the creator of the game, and has his own KZbin channel.

@@RadioTails Definitely be interesting to see what could come out of that but I fail to understand the reasoning for doing that, like why would a UK video game developing company make their own game play better in regions other than their own. In 1996 if Traveller's Tales were aware of the refresh rate differences around the world wouldn't they have fully optimised their game to play the same everywhere? They had 8 months to create the game, that's more time than most developers got when making Mega Drive games so they would have had the time to fully optimise it. Jon Burton did say once that back in the 1990's he didn't know any better like most of us regarding 50Hz. To my knowledge Sonic 3D is almost identical in PAL and NTSC. The title screen displays a different title (Blast/Flickies' Island) and the framerate is faster or slower depending on 50Hz or 60Hz, but the question is, which framerate is the intended one?

You can actually hack the VDP registers of the NTSC Mega Drive / Genesis to get a 240-line vertical resolution. Some tech demos actually make use of this!

Not true. Plug in a PAL Mega Drive into a PAL CRT and play Sonic 1 and you will still have the squished effect (bars above and below). It will appear how I've shown it on the PVM. If what you were saying is correct and it wouldn't show the bars, then the extra drawn lines for Chaotix wouldn't display on a PAL CRT because they would have been cut off by the CRT. I remember playing Sonic on an old PAL CRT back in 1991.

Possibly because you have it connected with composite cables and/or straight to your TV. Most modern TVs do not handle 240p and think it's 480i. Also, mine is plugged via RGB through to the Framemeister then to the TV.
