Clearly, I've gotten it to work here. As I said in the video description, defeating Robotnik from the back simply takes practice. The only portions of Robotnik that are lethal are the Flame, Legs, and Hands. The jetpack has no collision, and the entire body is vulnerable. You might have noticed in the video I have to line myself up perfectly in order to hit Robotnik from the back. It will take several attempts before you can consistently pull it off.

Actually, in Japan, Robotnik's name already was Eggman since the beginning. Surprising, huh?

@Blackshadow363 Which collection do you own: In Sonic Mega Collection: What you need to do is open and close Sonic 2 and Sonic Spinball 20 times each. You don't need to play them, just open them up and boot back to the menu. In Sonic Classic Collection is should be unlocked by default. Playing on an actual Megadrive/Genesis consoles requires you to plug Sonic 2 on top of Sonic and Knuckles. To my knowledge you cannot unlock it in any other collections. Failing that, try emulation. :P

His name depends on the location of the game. In Japan, it's name is Death Egg, in the UK it's Egg Terminator, elsewhere Egg Emperor... or Mecha Robotnik .. or.. It doesn't really seem to have a proper name. I went with the name that's consistant with the series, in this case, Egg Emperor, which is what the redesigned version of this robot was called in Sonic Heroes.

I'm guessing YT didn't convert the video's FPS properly, the game (and original video) looks fine my end. Certain items (such as the shield) were recoloured and such, and look a little odd.

04:13 Yep, they did playtesting. I read an old magazine article talking about how games were developed. It even showed some people sitting in front of a bunch of monitors testing the game for bugs. They clearly weren't too thorough, due to the many many glitches.

@AmericnOsttle10 You mean in the Sega games collection thing? In an older version for the PS2, you could unlock S2&K by playing the others. I haven't tried unlocking it on the PS3 version.

To be fair, it isn't really any easier than attacking him from the front - you just get more opportunities. The running jump is really hard to time, as falling into the Jet Pack's flame will kill you. (Yet oddly the jetpack itself doesn't harm you.) I ended up having to time via audio rather than visualy, and didn't actually look at the screen during either my practice runs or the actual recording. (Only whilst the boss is walking of course) Don't ask how it's easier, it just was.

The boss names are taken from the Japanese manual, what'da expect. Not that I disagree. I've always preferred Robotnik to Eggman. But both names are technically correct and canon so there really isn't any point in arguing about it. Besides you'll find I do use the word "Robotnik" a couple of times through-out the video.

@Dragonnus22 The UK comics gave the explaination that the animals served as Organic Batteries for the Robots. I've always gone with that version. I assume the capsules at the end of stages were creatures he was GOING to transfer into Badniks but didn't get chance to due to a Blue Spikey Critter showing up. I think this is a case of "It's there in the manual."

@ACESpark I thought, in Sonic 2l to transform, you have to press jump once, but in Sonic 3, it's jump twice. At least, that's how it is on my version on Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Anyway, you did a really good boss run as Knuckles, quick and efficient. On that fun fact that you had: Personally, I never legitimately passed Wing Fortress Zone with Sonic or Tails. I got stuck one place and had to skip ahead to the Death Egg Zone with the Level Select.

@bagaaoglong With Sonic, that's true. Remember that there are Sonic 3 controls in play with this game, so that plays a part into why you had to jump twice instead of once.

Actually, Robotnik is still his name in Sonic Adventure onwards. Since then, Eggman was retconned into his nickname (which he even uses himself), with Robotnik being his family name.

@ThePinheirinhoful That's probably because you're standing in the wrong place. You cannot stand directly underneath him, you have to stand to the side of him slightly. Too far to the right, you'll die, too far to the left you won't hit him. It's about knowing where to stand. It's not cheating. It's practice.

I wonder if for the hell of it could you do a hyper sonic/knuckles run for Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Even just a boss run would suffice. Hyper Sonic is my favorite part of those games and what makes them , to me , head and shoulders above most other Sonic games.

Both names are correct. Eggman is Robotnik's name in Japan. Robotnik is Eggman's name in the US and Europe. All the recent series has done is retcon BOTH names so BOTH are correct and EITHER can be used. They're interchangable. I personally use both.

@supashadowmasta27 Against Silver Sonic - do my spindash strategy and he is defeated in a few seconds. He sure to release the dash before he stands up. As for Egg Emperor, I would advise you to only jump at him when he lands. Spindash out of the way and then run up and hit him. Knuckles can barely make the jump, Sonic can jump over the Robot's claws when it's walking. The Emperor alternates between two attacks: Walking towards you and firing off his arms. The former is the best time to hit him.

the barrels in Sonic 3 act 4 carnival night could be easily used using just the dpad. I found it out quite by accident when I was a kid, lucky too because I don't think we had internet till 1997 or 98. Sonic and Knuckles lock on with that game and the super emeralds, hyper sonic/tails/knuckles was the epitome of creative game design to me when I was a wee baron. good times.

That was awesome, you killed Robotnik at the end there I don't think I'ld have the nerves to pull that off. Oh yeah have you, or anyone else really, ever had that glitch after getting that extra life at the end of Wing Fortress where the screen locks and when you jump down to follow Robotnik you die, or am I the only person that ever happens to? It doesn't always happen I'ld say about 5% of the time it has to me, wow that's one long comment sorry about that.

@Icarus1234567890 I recently played the game again, and that boss handed me my ass. It happens. :D Both the Wing Fortress and Final Bosses are amongst the hardest bosses in Sonic history, at least when playing with Knuckles. Many people don't even get past Silver Sonic.

I never legimitately beat S2&K. I got up to the final boss in one playthrough and got game over... so I came back later with the Level Select cheat and beat him. I wish I'd known how easy he is to beat back when I was a kid!

Thats something I didnt understand, this is the game where Sonic and Tails meet, why would the plane say Sonic on it. You would think that it would say Tails or Miles on it. Then in Sonic 3vit would say Sonic. Unless they imply that he puts it on there right before they go into the sky.

I call the final boss Egg Terminator also & I live in the US, however I came up with the name with a friend! originally I called it eggs-terminator but he thought I said Egg Terminator, after we got a game over because of it!
