This is really awesome stuff. Never seen someone provide such comprehensive information on APC UPSes. Love it!

I actually did record a segment on the waveform this UPS produces but didn't include it in the video due to a portion of my memory card getting corrupted. I recently obtained another UPS and may make a similar vid about that one. If I do I'll include a short discussion on the output waveforms. Thanks for the feedback

I have a few (6) of that same model UPS by APC and those "pig tails" on the back are for "wall wart" type adapters on like a router or modem. The battery I put in mine are UPG UB-1280 12V 8 AHr
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
What kind of luck have you had with those Chinese UPG batteries compared with the more reputable brands? I've never tried one myself, but when it comes to lithium batteries I've had bad luck with China sourced components. For batteries I prefer Japan or USA made products.
@Peonygreenleaf10 жыл бұрын
Well if you use the battery in what it supposed to go in then they will be fine. Now the weirdness starts with China batteries when you run them in an over charge state for whatever reason. The smaller batteries will heat up and bulge but they will still work just cosmetically deformed a little so the temperature is an issue. So far the ones I have haven't given me any trouble ab I only got those because the store I get batteries were out of the better band name ones. One thing you and anyone should watch out for is typical of China is the fake name brands where they take their cheap version and decal a name brand and model on it. This happens through online deals mainly and of course is illegal in the us and considered "black market" items.

The APC unit does nothing at all with GND - it just connects all grounds together and to the metal case. Power is supplied on line and neutral and is isolated from ground on these UPS units.
@knurlgnar2411 жыл бұрын
Should work fine, though the efficiency and no-load draw of UPS units is generally not very good. It would probably be most practical to turn the UPS and AC on and off together to avoid the idle draw of the UPS. I had wanted to do something similar but never got around to it.
@knurlgnar2412 жыл бұрын
The charger is current limited, so as many (in parallel) as you want within practical limits. However I would recommend charging only one at a time since batteries should only be charged in parallel if they are a matched pair that have been together since new and never separated.

I found an ABB ACS600... it's a frequency converter used to drive electric motors. It allows the machine to control torque and speed independently. anyways, i found one on the side of the road two weeks ago. I had no clue what it was but then I looked in youtube. What is inside is a AC/DC converter and then a DC/AC converter. .... Soooo, when I have the time I will look into what's wrong with it and see if the DC/AC part can be used an inverter... do you have any experience or konwledge about these devices? cheers
@spockmcoyissmart9619 жыл бұрын
Hi Knurlgnar24. The 'stupid' plugs on some were two-fold. 1, if you had cube transformers plugged into the receptacle, sometimes you couldn't use the other half of the duplex receptacle, so these short cord plugs were handy for them. 2 -- on some APC, the stupid plugs were 'surge protected' ONLY and not battery backed up. Looking at yours, do you see how 1 of the stupid cord receptacle was in a 'black' area. the other in a silver area. I'm going to guess 1 is surge only and 1 is battery backed up.

HI i got a 3000Va trying to get the Inverter part of and have the system do this. it is a 48V unit. 1. charge the 48v batteries with solar power 2. Hook up the 1000btu ac unit to this system and possibly run it during the sumeer do you think it is possible with this unit?? or am i out of my mind :S.

Auto Transformers are NOT ISOLATING. Hot side is Reference to Ground. It can and will ZAPPPPP Ya. 4S 38120 LiFe Cells work too. LOL I came across a 240VAC 50/60hz version Version (APC model BP650S 240 VAC UPS) . The Transformers is Center Tapped dual 120 Series tied secondary. This one has Four Wires secondary. 120 between each set. Tied both coils in Parallel. Had to change the Sockets. Yes It will do 800W @ 120VAC. Guess this one being the North American Version default is 60Hz. For all the trouble messing with it I could have just purchased one. Only Reason I kept it was they are Sign Wave. Using it in my Wind Turbine Solar Power Wall Set Up as a Fall Back . Manual Start Up Required. I need more Battery. LoL. Way More Battery.

But how do you get it to go into battery mode without plugging it into 120 first. My old ups had only a on off switch.
@knurlgnar243 жыл бұрын
On these older APC UPS units (before they were purchased by Schneider Electric) you hold the power button until it beeps and immediately release it. No AC power required to power it up.

Hi, I have 4 backups ups 650, can I use them in parallel. Or can I use all transformers on one of them for more power? Could you give me a schematic, it is possible to run 2 transformers in parralel? Thanks for example I have a smartups 750 sinewave. Can I change his transformer with a 2kw from a modified sine wave invertor, and install more transistor's on power output. I will install them on a separate board to don't have problem with heat. Thank you very much.
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
Transformers can be paralleled i they are identical. I have tried this with UPS units and it works, but not terribly well. I am not sure about swapping transformers between MSW and sine units as they may have different leakage inductance characteristics. I suspect that it will work but I am not certain. Be aware that the turns ratios are different for MSW and PSW transformers so you may not get exactly the right voltage and/or waveform.

Can you convert a "regular" sine wave inverter to a "grid-tie" or parallel ac voltage inverter that can back feed to the grid?
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
Converting a standard inverter to a grid tie inverter would require significant modifications. I suppose it would be possible but it would be more practical to simply purchase one.
@justtxjim10 жыл бұрын
Do they make some sort of phase shift transformer? I have really really good sine wave inverters ... A bunch of them.
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
Jim Frake The design of a grid tie inverter and a standard off-grid one is quite a bit different. It would be difficult to convert, but I'm sure possible for someone with the willpower.
@justtxjim10 жыл бұрын
Well if there is already a device that could monitor the phase of the grid ac and adjust the incoming inverter's phase accordingly, half of the mods are complete. Then all we would need is to create "islanding" which would disconnect from the grid when it went down. Why recreate the wheel if it already exists?

hi, i followed this video to help with apc smart 1500 ups. i wired two agm batts in parallel to the batt plug. they were both fully charged. i got big smoke coming from the back of the unit. i figured the jig was up. i took the unit apart and found the smoke came from the exiting ground ac line. i think someone who knows more than i would find that quite informative. to my laymans thinking it seems to me something unneccesary (read stupid) happened. something not key to the machine. but something that stops me in my tracks. i don`t think a determined knowledgable person would have to throw it away quite yet. any comments as to what could have caused quite a smoke show from the outgoing ground? the bared wire and burnt insulation is located at the end of the ac ground where it loops up and bolts to the ups chasiss. so sad. it came from the garbage at work and its battery was bulging , the lcd read batt needs changing. so for that time the unit was working. it was given to me after that batt was taken. i don`t get waht happened.

I found an apc ups 800 and It only works when it has a battery and it is connected to a wall outlet how do I convert it to were it just works with the battery, I also have a apc600 and that works just fine without being plugged into the outlet and it only has a battery...
@knurlgnar2410 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen that issue. Generally if you hold the 'on' button just until it beeps and then immediately release it they will power up without wall power. If you hold the button just a touch longer it will shutdown and you'll have to try again.

LOL!!! "REALLY?" Wow... To my amazement....LOL!!!
@dsvtechieone9 жыл бұрын
marcos22571 Some old UPS's just need to be plugged into themselves with a battery in them and turn them on, some you have to plug your AC wire into an isolation circuit then plug that into the back of the UPS. As far an isolation circuit goes I don't have a schematic on hand but I'm sure one could be found on Google!

"Gel Cells" just don't last- But the Big Auto Parts Chains have probably the best deals on Deep Cycle Batteries- Which last for about 8-10 years. And when you're done with your Deep Cycle because it has lost more than half it's capacity- They Have More than enough strength left to use in a Vehicle as a "Starting Battery" for several more years of use.
