1999 Western Conference Semifinals Game 2, May 19, 1999 | Great game by 20 year old Kobe trying to lead the Lakers to a win in San Antonio to tie the series up at 1. He totaled a new career playoff high at the time with 28 points to go with 8 boards and 4 dimes. Shaq, while quiet, had a better outing than he did in game 1, pouring in 16 points (7-11 FG) with 8 rebounds. After the Lakers got off to a great start while staying close all game, the latest they would lead was in the final minute of the 4th after a clutch contested three by Kobe in the corner off an inbound pass. The Lakers would follow that up with mistakes that's common among young teams and they would find themselves down 0-2 instead of tied 1-1.

Young Kobe and young D Fish choked in the final moments but this became a turning point in their careers because they both later became some of the most clutch players of their generation

I’m the biggest Shaq and Kobe fans out here. Yes Kobe had a great game here but choked when he missed his last two free throws which could’ve gave the Lakers a 3 point lead. Shaq didn’t perform well due to the swarming defense of the Spurs bigs and Fisher choked by turning the ball over in their second to last possession.

@@bryankennedy3719Even if the Lakers DID win game 2, it wouldn’t guaranteed we would win the series since they got swepted anyways. They simply didn’t close games well during the 1999 WCSF vs the Spurs. Same can be said during the 2023 WCF vs the Nuggets.

11:20 To this day, I have no idea why tf Kurt Rhambis started JR Reid over Robert Horry. Reid was trash and I can see why the Lakers got rid of him before the next season.

Lakers with Shaq and pre-Phil just were a collection of talented guys. Never really a team. Never a better example of that than this series. LA was the more talented collection...San Antonio was the better team.

The best example I heard was in 04 when Greg anthony was talking about team usa that year, "it's not about who has the best players it's which players play best together " Emanuel.

Damn the free throw pressure got to Kobe. He gave the Spurs that work though.

Kobe definitely had this game in his mind during the games 1 & 2 2001 WCF and games 3 & 4 2002 WCSF, as he would put great clutch performances in each of those games.

@@AkiraSendo12 needed 6 games after barely maintaining their 22 pt lead in game 5 tho in 2003. Their 1999 sweep on the Lakers was more impressive.

This was the first NBA game I ever attended back when I was ten years old. I was in tears after this loss, the Lakers had the Spurs beat had them beat, however Kobe couldn't knock down those free throws. But the Spurs were the better team that year and the Lakers still weren't ready to win until Phil Jackson came in the following season (Fisher/Kobe/Fox/Horry/Shaq were the best lineup in that era IMO). The rivalry between these two franchises serve some of my greatest memories.

Personally for me as a Laker fan even I love the roles that Fisher, Fox and Horry brung in that 2002 championship run, I thought the 2000 lineup of Harper, Kobe, Rice, AC Green and Shaq was even better because it allowed Fox, Fisher and Horry come off the bench to provide scoring punch. Their team was much more loaded in 2000 than 2002. Their bench was pretty weak in 2002.

Terminato92 I agree that the 2000 team was more talented and deeper, but from what I read Rice wasn’t happy with his role after that season. Plus, with the rise of Kobe on both ends of the court he became replaceable, along with Harper and Green, with Fox, Fisher and Horry who were much younger, spaced the floor a bit better, and/or better on the defensive end. It’s a shame Eddie Jones wasn’t apart of these championship teams but I understand that move at the time as well.

Taylor Summers Personally, I think of the Lakers didn’t traded Eddie Jones for Glen Rice in the 1999 lockout season, I think he would be more than happy to take a lesser role to defer to Kobe and Shaq similar how he did for Dwade during the 2004-05 season. He was more unselfish, better defender, and team player than Rice was.

Terminato92 yeah man no doubt about it, perhaps on a different timeline he wins a ring with LAL + MIA before getting traded both times. He had some solid years out in Charlotte, too.

Fun fact: This is the last playoff game the Lakers would lose at the Alamodome against the Spurs. They would win Games 1 & 2 in the 2001 WCF and Games 3 & 4 2002 WCSF against the Spurs undefeated.
