The good old" I respect Kobe" line. I love it. I love Michael Jordan. He's the reason I played and watched. I just realized that Kobe is an all around better player. I know you think I'm like 12 but I can assure u I'm 36. There are things Mike have that are unmatched. His competitiveness (see gambling problem) and his athleticism is slightly higher. And he had hands like Dr J

This is from an article I just read: For Bryant to even catch Jordan, he'd need a Rookie of the Year award (which of course he can't do), four more MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award, and four more Final MVP Awards. So in order for Bryant to match Jordan in terms of Finals MVP Award, he'd need to have nine rings. In terms of ranking within the top 10 all-time of any category, the only one Bryant is a part of is free throws, where he's currently ranked 10th all-time

Here is quote from Bill Simmons book, the guy Phil Jackson is agreeing and referring to: Here’s the stretch when Jordan peaked: matchless athletic ability, maximum speed and explosiveness, Larry /Magic-level respect from officials, extreme durability (despite old-school rules that allowed teams like the Pistons to hammer him on drives) and multiple defenders required to stop him. Unleash ’89 Jordan into the current NBA with no hand checking or hard fouls and it’s all over. He’d score 45 a game

@tiger1649 Kareem Abdul Jabbar - 6 rings, 4 MVPs, 2 FInals MVPs, all-time leading scorer in NBA history, Rookie of the Year. Magic Johnson - 5 rings, 3 MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs. Wilt Chamberlain - 100 pt. game. 2 rings. 1 Finals MVP. 4 Regular season MVPs, Rookie of the Year. And those are just the LAKERS I'd rank ahead of Kobe. Just because they didn't play last years doesn't mean that they aren't as great as today's players.

@2012truthhurts MJ was 39 yrs old and past his prime, so take that into consideration... "were they a playoff team? Were they winning?" They fell 1 game short of being eligible for making the 8th seed that year. Him missing those # of games due to his knee injury is what caused them to just miss getting in. And the fans DID vote him in '03. It was the media that pressured VC to let MJ have the "starting" position, but not give up his position on the team entirely. So get it right...

@yung Taylorr If you're referring to the game where kobe scored 55 pts, those 42 1st half pts were scored on Jerry Stackhouse (who was guarding him), not MJ. When MJ actually slid over and actually guarded kobe in that game, he forced kobe into 1-13 shooting (1-10 in the 2nd half), and 2 T.O.'s.

From the same article: Even if you look at each player's best seasons, Jordan wins. In the 1988-1989 season, Jordan averaged 32.5 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2.9 steals, while shooting 53.8 percent from the field, 27.6 percent from three, and 85 percent from the free throw line. During Kobe's best year in the league he averaged 31.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.4 steals on 46.3 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from three, and 86.8 percent from the line.

@imsljr420 3 points is pretty huge. 23ppg is Dirk, 26ppg is Wade. Playoff numbers went to hell. But again, this is only one season. I just don't see how LBJ's output can't be affected with another premier player sharing the ball. Happens to everyone. And if it doesn't drop, color me extremely impressed with LBJ.

@tiger1649 Continued...MJ scored 63 points in a playoff game, a record that has stood for 25 years. He scored 55 points in the Finals, a record that has stood for almost 20 years. MJ elevated his game when it mattered the most - in the playoffs and finals. Other than you I literally know of NO ONE who thinks Kobe is better than MJ. Ever wonder why that is? If Kobe was better than MJ I would be bragging about him instead of MJ, but that's just not the case.

@2012truthhurts Yes, Jordan did have the team built around him because even as a rookie he was one of the top three or four players in the league. Jordan had only played two years when Pippen joined the Bulls, but it took Pippen a long time to develope into a bonafide all-star. I think having MJ as a teammate helped Scottie become the player that he was. The biggest difference between KB and MJ is consistency. Night in and night out MJ dominated. Kobe is more sporadic. A few great gms, many avg.

@iwon2013 I've heard that. But I personally haven't seen any evidence to validate it. The guy that's on record as having the highest vertical leap was a guy named Michael Wilson, that used to play for the Memphis State Tigers in college, and then for the Globetrotters. I actually saw him play against my Razorbacks and was blown away by his unearthly leaping ability.

B) played on 1 of 7 teams in HISTORY to feature 4 All Stars (including himself) in 1 season? C) played with 8 different guys to avg in DOUBLE FIGURES during his pre-title & title seasons? D) has now played with "2" #1 draft picks (Shaq & D-Howard), and a total of 7 different All Stars? E) now has played with "2" different teammates with more MVPs than himself? KOBE! Not MJ!!

Thats has a lot to do with all the superstars being on select teams, which is a new, and stupid trend going on right now. Glad the league is trying to cut it down. I miss when every team had a superstar and the team was built around them with role players. So in a sense can be considered more competitive today, but it feels like the NBA might as well just be 16 teams overall. There are solid reasons for both sides.

there really is no way to compare who is a better player when their primes were decades apart except by using the number of championships and mvp's they won. but, it's still not accurate because that greatly depends on what teammates you had as well. they are both amazing players, but if i had to choose, michael was first and revolutionized the game, so i think he is a better player overall.

I figured you would come back with nothing and you didn't let me down. Yes, scoring was HARDER in the 90s which is why the rules were changed to make scoring easier. That's why people say that MJ would average 50 ppg if he had the rules in his era that Kobe has today. What part of Kobe's game is better than MJ's? Not a single thing, which is why it is absurd to compare Kobe to MJ. Most NBA analysts don't rake Kobe in the top ten players of all time. Most rank MJ as #1. There's a reason for that.

@2012truthhurts : i disagree, i think playing next to shaq is more of a luxury than playing next to pippen...with shaq you can play more aggressively on defense because if you get burned you have shaq back there protecting the basket & on offense you get wide open shots with him drawing all the attention. plus if you miss he's right there to rebound.

Like I said, all we hear about are a few games. I guess 5 MVP Awards, 6 Finals MVP awards, 10 scoring titles, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, 3-time steals leader, all time rebound leader among guards, etc. don't mean anything to you. If Kobe is soooo great, why does he only have one MVP and 2 scoring titles? If he's the great scorer that all the Kobe jock sniffers say he is, why can't he score more than Kevin Durant? Wanting Kobe to be the best doesn't make it so.
