My dog definitely listens to what we say, waiting to hear words he knows. Walk, hungry, snack, couch time, Mona (one of our best friends). He runs to the window when he hears Mona's name

My dog understands a number of words & phrases. Some w/hand signals but most without. I love all of these Koko videos coming out. Such a special, wonderful girl!! ❤❤❤

As the mother of a late talking toddler I applaud Penny for putting in the work. I remember weeks and weeks of narrating every single little thing just hoping he would pick up anything and before he spoke, it was mostly like this…him comprehending but not speaking back. It can be isolating and tiring but she did it daily!! And it paid off. Not comparing my son to a gorilla just the process of language instruction and how even the “natural” way can take work. ❤

Cats and dogs can learn words, so I’m not surprised Koko could understand so many things they said to her. She probably understood even more words than she could sign. People are like that too. When you learn a second language it’s easier to listen than speak.

My dog understands body language quite accurately. That‘s rather complex, because it involves understanding context in a stream of subtle and ever changing information.

I think domesticated animals understand a lot of the spoken language in their home. They also use their capabilities of observation to really look at the speaker and be very attentive to their emotions and physicalities. Humans also have that ability but choose not to use it very much probably because staring at another human is considered to be impolite. But by not looking at the speaker humans miss out on truly understanding the entirety of the conversation which, I think, leads to much more miscommunication between humans. Wild animals may not understand as many words as domesticated animals but they certainly comprehend the emotions and actions the words convey. Perhaps humans used to actually use their own sense of smell that animals use extensively to gather information and communicate. We humans don't have nearly as many smell receptors and identifiers as animals have. But, perhaps it is really social etiquette that has banned this method of communication between people. Had I been verbally proofing (and re-proofing) this comment to my cat she would have, in no uncertain terms, told me to cease and desist by jumping off the sofa and walking away. She is recently deceased and I very much miss our "conversations".
