I would be concerned about the impact of the trapped heat from the foam affecting the hard drives' reliability and longevity.

Absolutely beautiful build. I’m not an expert. But I’m a little concerned about air flow and heat. Just found your channel and enjoyed the project. Thank you.

I like what you did USB hub. Can't argue with the result. As an alternative for future projects, opening up a piece of low voltage electronic and moving the leads from an LED around is easy. Do I think it was worth it here? No, you found the prefect shaped controller and had the CNC to do the work. But I just wanted to put it out there for anyone else reading this. You can make a lot with a little if you are willing to void a few warranties ;)

Hey man love the video, it's a beautiful peace. However you are dramatically impacting the life of those drives without having proper ventilation and them being surrounded by that foam! Just wouldn't want you to lose any of that hard earned data or footage!

I like the idea of the hard drive box what do you have failed to remember is how hot they get when they’re working so I think about the heat and I may consider making one
@redlegwoodshopllc1128

Well done. Heat may end up being a little problem but a small adjustment and a vent hole with a fan on the bottom should do the trick. Hook up the fan to one of the hubs too. :). The rest, especially the Wood working part is top notch though. I wish I had the time to strengthen my skills. In due time though. 🤘

I agree with the heat issue. I did end is cutting slits on the bottom of the box to displace that heat. Want to put a fan in there too

Hello wonderful job. Not trying the nai sayer here, but did you put vents in for the drives? They will over heat if you do not. Just asking and trying to help.

I did end up putting in vents in the bottom after a couple of uses. I do also want to include a little fan in the bottom. Maybe a follow up video

With the need for ensuring your data stays safe and usable, you really should invest in a decent dedicated NAS with RAID. As others have stated, heat is going to build up because of that foam and reduce the longevity of those drives.
@KomarProject

If the data in those drive is actually important to you, ditch the external hard drives yesterday and get yourself a proper NAS, with some resilient storage, like ZFS or RAID-5, for example, that way one or more disks, depending on configuration, can die and you won't lose data.

The need for ventilation, particularly with these types of portable SSDs, is essential. Get rid of “all” of the foam- rout/cut out five rows, 1/18” thick, 4” wide ventilation slits/openings on two facing sides (not on the bottom). Instead of the strips of blue LED lights, insert a fan next to one of vent sides. Sure, it may not look pretty on the inside-but that’s why God invented lids.

Do you need to dissapate heat from the box somehow, or do the drives not overheat? This is a beautiful build and it looks fantastic :)
@KomarProject
@KomarProject Жыл бұрын
They do get a little warm. So after it was all done I did cut in slits in the bottom of it to disparate the heat and it’s been working well. I do want to throw a little fan in there to help circulate it as well.

Id love to build a media vault server that gets housed in something that looks that good. Proper storage server with redundant storage pools... mmmmmm now im thinking about needing to build another server and knocking the rust off my woodworking skills. My woodworking skills arent nearly this good but damn I think im going to have to do it... AND I DONT EVEN NEED ANOTHER STORAGE SERVER

Portable HDD/SDD's in a foam filled box will overheat. Very nice project but not very practical. Take the foam out, put in open dividers and install some fans and vent holes to cool the devices.
