I watched this show when it first started up, too. But that was when it was eating bugs, being put in a coffin with non-lethal snakes, eating bull penises - NOTHING was truly dangerous, it was simply gross and chill-inducing. Mind over matter, humans defeating biological impulse to run away and avoid. The later episodes of Fear Factor, it was clear they had run out of ideas, and were seriously treading on some fucked up shit. I'm glad I stopped watching that crap long before it became the monstrosity it became. It's clear why it ended up cancelled.

My dad’s second wife fell off of a horse and broke her neck. She died instantly, and she was also pregnant with a little girl, which neither of them knew about. My dad is absolutely terrified of me riding horses. He does love them, he had a massive stroke at 23 and had to relearn how to do everything, reading, writing, walking, talking, eating, even going to the bathroom on his own. He’s 60 to this day and still walks slightly dragging his foot when he steps forward and it’s really hard for him to get words out a lot. When he was in rehab he was around horses a lot which boosted him a lot. He’s perfectly fine with me being around horses, and he also loves being around them, his brother even owns a horse sanctuary. But the second I’m on one he absolutely panics.

In the UK, we have a somewhat similar show called 'I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here!' but instead of normal people, it's famous people. The celebs have to live in a camp in an Australian jungle together for like 3 weeks, and there are some really good reality TV moments. They have to do challenges like searching for things in the dark, eating gross things, or getting covered in bugs, to earn stars (which gets them food, more stars = more food). Sometimes they work together and sometimes the challenges are done solo and the public votes on who does the challenges. It's a really popular show, maybe you could react to some best bits! (but it's less cruel and way safer - because they monitor it carefully - than this American show lmao)

This was one of those shows that EVERYONE watched back in the day. Also yeah it could be pretty gnarly but in watching an entire episode you got to see people face their biggest fears and often overcome them. It was also cool because it put women and men on the same playing field. The often funny banter and development of each contestant’s fortitude is what kept people invested in the show beyond just the shock&awe.

I remember watching this show all the time as a kid and being so entertained. Watching this video now, it makes me wonder exactly how much stuff like this really did mess up the American psyche. It's not like a horror film where everything is fake, it truly is tormenting real people. Even if those people consented for a prize, the show is ultimately built on getting extreme reactions to these extreme challenges from its contestants. The show pressures them to not withdraw consent even when they are dealing with physical and psychological torture. Even though withdrawing is an option, it isn't immediate and the damage may have already been done.. It's scary to think back and realize how entertaining it felt as a kid when now it feels so obviously not ok..

This show aired when I was a little girl, I remember it being on local channels during the evenings. There's one episode in particular that has stuck with me to this day (mind you, I'm 27 now...) where the contestants had to dive into a dirty, water filled dumpster while it rained to find keys of some sort. When they found the key they would go to their partner and the partner would then unlock a box that contained GROSS shit that they had to eat. I'm talking raw cow's stomach, pig intestines, etc. It grossed me out so fucking much watching people slurp down the pig intestines...

What's cool is that Universal Studios in Orlando has a live-action Fear Factor show that park guests can participate in. I did it in 2007 and made it to the second stunt before being eliminated.

I remember watching this with my older cousins when I was like 12 and I’m still scarred by it lol. I remember in an episode, they were tied in straightjackets and buckled into old cars at the bottom of a deep pool FILLED with algae and kelp (so it was murky and scary and spooky) and their partner had to swim and find their was to the car to rescue them. and on another part I remember, they went to a vineyard and they had to stomp grapes and drink the juice except they weren’t grapes, but mud and earth worms. I can’t with this show. Absolutely not.

I watched this show since I was a kid...The fact that i don't feel anything but pure excitement and joy kinda scares some of my friends...A lot of them can't even watch 1 episode but I managed to watch all episodes..idk whats the reasons but i get excited when watching fear factor... and I was only 10 or 11 years old when i became one of the biggest fans of FEAR FACTOR..

This aired in the Netherlands as well, I remember watching it with my mom. Back then I wondered if I'd ever dare to do such things, by now I'm just really glad to have common sense.

i once got bucked off a horse during a trail ride when i was 10, fell flat on my back and had the wind knocked out of me for half a minute. imagine what that feels like, but a BULL knocks you off. something major could've happened to that woman. [actually lying in bugs, dealing with animal blood, and needle piercings have all happened on Dragula, but somehow it's much less painful to watch than it is on fear factor; at least the Dragula contestants seem to be enjoying themselves more]

We have a show that shows over here in Ireland and the UK called I’m a celebrity get me out of here. It’s a bunch of celebrities camping in the Australian outback. And to win meals they compete for stars doing challenges like these. They have gotten a little less gruesome throughout the years I think. For example they used to make them eat live bugs, but now they’re dead bugs 😂

This was one of my favorite shows growing up. It was the era of RealityTV but even as a kid, I was able to tell that most of them were scripted. This was different, it was Raw and Brutal but most of all Entertaining. Man, those were the days. Waking up and watching Toonami and then watching reruns of Fear Factor.

no. the octopus isn't alive. it's called live octopus bc the nerves and muscles keep twitching in the first hours after death, it's just a freshly died octopus. the mukbangery ssoyoung, has tortured actually living animals though so i agree she's sadistic and disturbing. puts on a big show of being scared while torturing animals lol

We have an expression in France which is : “C’est rien c’est la France”, wich litteraly means “it’s nothing (it’s ok) it’s France”. We use it in situations when someone enounce a fact about something so weird or unexpected that you know it could only happen in France so I’m gonna use this. It’s nothing it’s America.

I used to watch the show & was convinced I could do pretty much any of the challenges with no problem. The blood, the bugs, snakes...any of it. But the ONLY thing that would hold me back...any stunt dealing with heights (the show almost always had one of those ). I know I would have turned into a crying 9 year old girl before I could even attempt one of those

I think the one with the tank full of cow's blood was actually the easiest. It's just blood, and if you can eat blood sausage, you can do this ... just don't drink any. The one with the insects, the bull riding and the needle thing were all insane. It's crazy what people will do for money.

Not to double comment but I was curious so I googled it. Apparently the worst injury during the run of Fear Factor were double broken ankles after a fall, but it didn't stop on the set. Someone sued the show because their reaction to it was so much they got dizzy and hurt themselves after running into a door by accident (it was thrown out), and a "Fear Factor event" in Thailand did, sadly, result in the death of a very young man in 2005. Poor kid was only 22.
