hmm, shouldn't have to do with the flag despawning, that just makes no sliding down animation. And the flag was actually there in this example... Seems like the cause is the timer never starting to count down. Maybe in this case it's because of the really weird physics with the "whirlpools" that were happening. You can see mario ran very quickly towards the castle. Maybe that made the countdown not start.

@@Kosmicd12 I think that it's because you finished with the ones digit of the timer at 3, which would normally trigger fireworks, but if there are too many sprites on the screen for the fireworks to spawn, then the game softlocks. (This is often most likely to happen if there's a Lakitu around dropping lots of Spinies.) To assure you avoid such a softlock, avoid finishing grabbing the flagpole with the ones digit at 1, 3, or 6 if there are multiple sprites still around.

However, fireworks _do_ still appear, which I confirmed by checking another video of this hack. I wonder how many of those clips were intended and how many were cheese. It did seems like the hack creator intended you to get creative with glitches to solve it. But the solutions were pretty open-ended for the most part. I'd be really interested in seeing a puzzle hack that takes knowledge of these SMB1 glitches to the absolute limit so that Kosmic can flex his SMB1 coding trivia on us.
