I primarily work with celebrities and the ultra wealthy in my cosmetic dermatology practice. The amount of effort and procedures they talk about are actually a massive understatement for the amount of work and what gets done. One example, nearly every idol gets facial contouring, particularly a fat transfer to cheeks, forehead, and sometimes even the chin. Why? Aside from it making the face more youthful and people underestimating how much the "blank" areas of your face (ie. Areas without specific features like the eyes, nose, and mouth) play a role in how you look, the main reason is so that idols can be dangerously underweight while not having their faces be gaunt.

Main takeaway: celebs/idols have all kinds of professional help to enhance their looks. While it’s okay to appreciate their visuals (because they do look fabulous), there’s no point in holding the same extreme standards to yourself when their image is so heavily curated. ❤

I know I am guilty of this, but I think we all need to put down our phones and look around us. No one around us looks like the images in media- social media or traditional channels (magazines, tv, movies). It’s not because everyone around each of us is ugly. It’s because no one actually looks like that. If you think about the most beautiful person you’ve seen in person, they are not flawless. Yet we don’t think they’re any less beautiful because they don’t look like what we see online. It may be apocryphal but there’s a story about the actor Cary Grant in the 1940’s where he wanted to get into a restaurant. The maitre’d asked for his name. He replied “Cary Grant”. The maitre’d replied “You don’t look like Cary Grant.” He responded “I know, no one does.”

Looking at heavily edited photos or just people edited or looking very attractive is actually psychologically and socially damaging. Not only does it distort what is naturally possible, it also subconsciously dictates choices we make in friendships and relationships. For example, say you are meeting someone for the first time on a blind date. If you spent the hours before that looking at images that fit the above criteria, you are more likely to deem that person unattractive from the start and will pass over even trying to get to know them on a personal level. Obviously cumulative consumption also plays a role too. But if you spent the hours before that date, say, in the park or somewhere where you were observing real, unedited human beings, you will be more likely to find that same person more attractive and be more inclined to get to know their personality. You will see them much more accurately and be able to place them comparatively to others with accuracy, whereas in the first situation, your brain will be dropping them by 2 - 4 points on the attractiveness scale. That might not seem important, but it is. Someone we find attractive, we are more likely to overlook personality shortcomings, and with someone we don't find attractive, we are more inclined to look for reasons not to like then on a personal level as well. So it can wind up impacting how annoyed you might get with someone over a quirk or personality trait or disregard what they say in favor of your own interpretations, which will skew negatively. You can actually see this in K-Pop idol fans with what they are willing to put up with from an idol versus what they would put up with from a friend in real life. They also might suddenly start finding their friends more irritating, less intelligent, entitled, etc. even though nothing has really changed other than how their brain has been primed with the content they consumed beforehand.

One of the most popular procedures for K-Pop idols is actually facial fat transfers. Aside from how it can change your appearance, the main reason it is done is so that idols can maintain being extremely underweight without having their faces look gaunt. It tricks people into believing that the person is actually a healthy weight because it covers up the facial visual cues our eyes depend on when assessing someone's weight, since we are genetically predisposed to look for healthy traits for mating partners. It's a subconscious thing that you can't turn off.

They also have a ton of makeup on which looks good for the camera but doesn't work so well in real life (i.e. it does not hold up for long or only looks good under certain lighting, Etc), the effects of stage makeup cannot be underestimated. I saw one Making Of video for a Kpop MV and they were re-applying the stars makeup for every single scene, there were heaps of matte powder foundation being applied to make the skin look completely pore-less.

I live in Korea, and in real life, a lot of young Koreans are beautiful - flawless skin, perfect figures. That being said, there's also a special place to do your makeup in every bathroom, in addition to the normal sink. You'll always see a lot of people reapplying their makeup there. I participated as an audience member for an SBS variety show, and every time the cameras stopped rolling on them, people were at their mirrors fixing their faces. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are so common that there's even a lack of regular doctors. It's much more rewarding to be a plastic surgeon currently. Unfortunately, people go into debt for beauty. The pressure is real, and it's affecting their mental health😢.

oh god... lived in Korea for 5 years and you are giving me PTSD lol. It is something I grew to absolutely LOATHHHHE about the culture. god damn mirrors/reflective surfaces everywhere, people taking selcas or insta pics everywhere, insta photo op decor everywhere, people fixing their hair or makeup constantly, plastic surgery or designer brand ads everywhere, everyone trying so damn hard to appear perfect. lol it made me like... go hard the opposite way. I stopped wearing makeup because I didn't enjoy it anymore, it felt less like a "fun" thing and more like a "pressure" thing, so I stopped other than wearing concealer on blemishes lol. I was dating my now fiance then and when we'd be in an elevator or something with people fixing their hair or whatever to ~ omg look so perfect ~ ... I started messing my and my fiance's hair up in retaliation or going on dates to cafes and taking "ugly face" double chin selfies instead LOL. god damn people way too obsessed with that toxic beauty/superficial/brand name culture over there need to take a damn chill pill... seriously ruins the enjoyment of Korea after a while.

What infuriates me is the pictures of "perfect" skin are heavily edited. They not only whitewash them, they filter it. Idols have texture! There is such a thing as video filter not only camera. These idols are starving and practice 10 hrs a day dancing sometimes. Like ballet dancers they incinerate calories being on super strict unhealthy diets. That's why you see fainting on stage. That being said it glamorizes being skinny , perfect skin with symmetrical features done by plastic surgery and needles.

Actually, idols don't spend much time dancing. That's just an excuse fans have made up to justify unhealthy weights. Idols typically spend 2 days learning choreography before shooting it in an MV. They then practice a little more and then will only do the dance for performances, which adds up to about 10 - 20 minutes per day. So in reality, idols only spend 10 hours a day dancing for 2 to 3 days per comeback. Most of their low weights come from under 500 calorie diets, something I can confirm due to 2 female idols being in my larger friend network. Their exact diet while touring is below: Breakfast: 1/4 serving of oatmeal, plain, no salt or sugar or anything else added Lunch: All green salad, no dressing or salt, 4 cherry tomatoes, 1/2 egg white. Dinner: Same as above, but swap out the cherry tomatoes and egg white for 1/4 serving boiled tofu. Beverages: Only plain water or iced americanos. On performance and special appearances or filming days: no eating or drinking until the live show begins or group choreography shots are wrapping up. If it is a big magazine spread, extend that period of fasting for 2 days and no drinking anything (again) for at least 24 - 36 hours. I can't tell you how unhealthy that is. It's literally about 350 - 500 calories per day. The agency also gives them stimulants and fat blockers to take regularly for weight loss and maintenance as well. One of the main reasons people don't pick up on just how thin idols actually are (Wonyoung, for example, has lanugo as do many other idols). If you see an idol with body hair on their arms or legs that is white-ish in color, that isn't regular body hair. It's a symptom of anorexia/malnutrition and being underweight. Idols have their actual body hair removed through laser treatments. But lanugo, due to its light coloring, does not respond to permanent hair removal treatments. The main reason fans have a hard time determining just how underweight idols are is because facial contouring via fat transfer is probably the single most popular cosmetic surgery for idols, even beyond rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty. Why? Aside from making your face look more youthful and smaller due to more detail in the "blank" areas (cheeks, chin, forehead) of the face, it covers up the unhealthy weight. When we judge someone's weight and health, we rely heavily on facial cues at a subconscious level. It's just biologically wired into us at a subconscious level from evolution dictating humans and other mammals pick out a healthy mate. So by getting a fat transfer, it lets an idol or person in general be extremely thin while not having any facial gauntness. When our eyes fail to perceive the normal facial gauntness that would accompany the BMI and weights they are at, we are heavily inclined to perceive that person as being healthy. This is why when people do tend to spot idols as being very thin, it's usually from photos where the face isn't the first thing your eyes go to. It will be screenshots taken while dancing when the idol isn't controlling their facial expressions or looking at the camera or pictures of them from behind or with their face out of focus.

Rather than shaming them, let’s just work on ourselves and be good role models for our friends, younger siblings/people around us. Idols and celebs themselves are victims of these extreme beauty standards. Especially that many of them have been trainees at a very younge age, and have been constantly surroundd by people telling them they have to look and act a certain way. If you are a fan of any of them, just always comment positive things to them, things that you yourself would like to hear, how you yourself would like to be talked to. Let’s remember celebs are extremely pressured to look a certain way because they are literally burdened with how much money and time and effort their company, sponsors, mentors, families spend on them to be able to in turn make a lot of money for not just themselves but for all of those people around them, not to mention dealing with harsh criticisms from people online… it’s a billion dollar industry, have some grace for them they are people with inscurities just like you. I’m a millenial and grew up without social media in my teen years, but we still had a lot of insecurities from magazines, tv commercials, billboards, print ads, because all the models of look a certain way, just as idols do today. Every generation has their struggles, but we do have the power as consumers and as sns users on what type of media we consume and we put out there.

It's a blessing my mental health didn't deteriorate towards that direction (2000s ED epidemic). I'm in my 30s now and still constantly bodycheck but I don't hate myself as much anymore. Practically in every social interaction now, I make a conscious effort not to comment on other people's body (unless I'm explicitly asked to comment) because it could be the catalyst for someone's descent into that unhealthy and chronically unhappy mental state.

Actually sometimes I use filters because of the opposite. Like my camera makes me look SO detailed and sharp and the lighting is so bad, sometimes I think using just a soft filter/light editing actually makes up for that and makes you look more how you actually do. So it just depends on the situation :^) texture is nothing to be self conscious of, but its also not nearly as visible to the human eye as cameras can capture/we are worried it is. Also like when I try to get a picture of a really nice sunset, my phone can never ever capture the same colours so I'll edit it to look like how I'm seeing it in person.

i can think of several female idols trying to break with the beauty standards (esp. irt light skin, being super skinny) despite the criticism they receive for it. more power to them! i hope more and more especially younger idols have the courage to follow in their footsteps and just be themselves, maybe that will help turn the societal tide... but if we look at old (and new) hollywood, the same practices exist(ed) in the west too! in old hollywood for example, they were very fond of using special lights specifically to make the female lead's eyes sparkle, paired with a very soft focus on her face in close-ups. now the problem is more that all these things have become more subtle, which tricks especially younger people into thinking it's all natural.

The "shoulder botox" area is actually the trapezius muscle. I've watched on KZbin about women reducing the size of their trapezius for their wedding day. I read that the armpit sweat doesn't actually stop but the sweat is redirected to other parts of the body.

I didn't know that people were self-conscious about that muscle! If it's enough to really be noticeable, that just means you're strong! I could see the sweat being redirected. @@anhthynguyen9253It's not about the smell, it's about the actual sweat. I've NEVER seen a kpop idol with sweaty pits, even when they're on tour and clearly sweating a lot in other places. So yes they're either using botox or those super powerful antiperspirants that basically block the sweat glands completely. A related thing they didn't mention is that idols get their armpit hair lasered off too. Always women, sometimes men do it too. I've also heard they put makeup on their armpits to make them look smooth and even toned. Before I wondered how that would even work since a normal person would just sweat the makeup off in a seconds, but if they're blasting their armpits with botox too, then problem solved heh.

Oh my god, this is so true. The high expectations of beauty standards are unattainable. Back then, I often heard how girls complained about how their skin was not "white" enough, because it was a thing in my country. Though I find that any person can be beautiful, regardless of their skin color. I didn't recall hearing complaints about skin texture from a smooth-skinned perspective until these days. I don't mean to be salty or invalidate a person's feelings. Of course, even a good looking person could feel insecure too. In the end, it's just our expectations that make us unhappy. But the sad thing is, our society normalizes it, and some even encourage many vulnerable people to achieve that so-called beauty standard.

Thanks for sharing these informations. Even more frustrating part among all these are influencers trying these celebrities procedures and stating that all those are attained by certain skincare or food/drinks that they are promoting is actually sick. There is this one Korean plastic surgeon in TikTok and Instagram who actually states the procedures and treatments that are done by most adored celebrities so that teenagers won't compare themselves to those celebs. Of course, these are personal preferences of one's choice, but that's not really a choice for certain age groups trying so hard to fit in socially. That's the whole point of realising BEAUTY WITHIN. I'm looking at these procedures now at age of 25 and deciding not to get pulled in those IT GIRL dream body but if I was in my teen years while being vulnerable to others opinion and bullying of certain part of my body or skin texture which we all have gone through, I would have definitely considered taking these procedures if given chances and that's scary. Honestly, people who shares these awareness are GEMS.

So you are NEVER allowed to film or take pictures during sound check. Your discussion made me realize that it’s probably e because it shows the idols without makeup and costumes and they don’t want pictures of them like that. The sound check is just a preview of the songs they are already going to sing, so it’s not like secret content. It’s just to maintain photos of them with the aesthetic that they want put out. I think there’s one thing not a lot of people know and many others forget, and that is that no camera can represent reality in a photo. No camera lens captures what the human eye sees. There is always distortion by a lens. Camera images are a 2D so even if there was no distortion, it still won’t look accurate. If you want to see some more realistic pictures of celebrities, go to Getty Images. They have the original image before a PR team gets to it.

The selfie lens simply doesn't have the same focal length as the rear camera, so you'll look different in the selfie cam than you do in real life. It's similar to what you said about the guy who uses different lenses on his camera to look different. The most accurate photo of human faces a phone can take is actually the "dirty mirror selfie" that you take with the rear camera standing 2-3 feet away from a mirror.

You can do different excercises and use different tools (like gua sha tools) to tone your body and face and look healthier and with glowier skin, along with a good diet and skin care routine. But it takes consistency and months, sometimes years to achieve. Has no side effects for health, though. I have the feeling that modifications through surgery are the consequence of body and face dismorphia. Unless we are talking about reconstruction surgery or any health problem that caused deformities on our face or body. I've been doing excercise since I was a kid in the 90's and using gua sha tools since 2021 and now I notice I have that L shape on my neck and shoulders 😂Also because I've been swimming my whole life, I went from pear shape to hourglass: hips got narrower and shoulders and back went wider, so now they are the same width. Because I have a tiny waist (30 cms smaller than hips/shoulders), it does the trick and I look hourglass, althought I originally were not. Small breasts, though, but I'm ok with that.

@@silynita I bet the industry is saturated with this personality type because you have to be ambitious and incredibly determined to debut, let alone have a career in this cutthroat industry. I remember, Jisoo of Blackpink said that she's never been afraid to take on challenges. I think her mindset is the standard for idols. To relentlessly go after your goals even though it might seen hopeless/endless.

It’s a crying shame that people are still being driven to look a certain trendy perfect way instead of just being happy with the way they are! I’m beyond grateful that I honestly am never a follower and hopefully never will be. If people don’t like the way I look, don’t look!

I think the best takeaway anyone can get is one that is very subtle and that is: when we are young: we would've growing up: we could've as adults and an actual grown up: glad we decided we shouldn't have So, our bodies and our skin is always changing as we grow and while I genuinely believe makeup and things like filters and photoshop are more of a form of art and costume I wholeheartedly also believe that if we allow ourselves to be obsessed, we lose ourselves and our identity to the costume we decided that represents us. As an older woman, my advice to the young is to wait. I know, boring but it will give you the time and experience necessary for you to make an informed decision if what you are choosing to do is the best course of action for you and your life. Til then, teach yourself and those around you that you have the right to be an individual and are a beauty onto yourself. Rejection from the world means nothing if you've already accepted yourself 💜

You can also practice keeping your nose not flaring up or getting the muscle between the neck and shoulders more down. They are a few of the standard things you learn when you are a photomodel ;) So when people tell me my photos are so beautiful and they wished they looked like me I tell them "thank you, it's mostly makeup, lighting and A LOT of hard work" 👀 Just a side note 😅 But I do agree with the part of top surgeons actually doing minimal interventions to make you look like a little better version of yourself, never these outrageous transformations that look completely plastic. That's why I'd never go to a doctor advertising with very unnatural results 👀

Kindness is beautiful! I know it’s trite but an ugly mean attitude really changes your outward face too. Maybe it’s because I’m old now but aging contains so much beauty. I didn’t get all these lovely smile lines by frowning. That being said, I really would like my genetic vertical lip lines erased but not enough to go under the needle

Omg im so glad I came across this video! I've always been wondering how these idols dont have muscles showing thru their calves despite always wearing heels. Also i've always thought that their L shape near the nape is all natural, I always thought that if I workout right I might get the same result but now I know it can't be really done with natural approach. I would've wasted so much time and effort bc thats just 1 thing i kind of want to achieve at some point.. Their life is very tiring to hear tho. So much effort contrary to what they show. Tho i think IU has always been faired skin even when she was young. Thank you for this informative vid, so helpful!

When you get Botox for headaches they do it on the shoulders, it helps your posture which helps your neck support your head properly. You can also get Botox on your face skin to stop sweating.

My Goodness. I think it‘s really about time we all start just being okay with the way we naturally are. All of these things, it‘s insane. I‘m so sorry that people in East Asia have those crazy beauty standards, but then again, every part of the world has their own beauty standards and it‘s just completely messed up. We‘re all so beautiful. We should be grateful if we have functioning legs, arms, noses, eyes, ears, teeth,… And not look for flaws and ways to make everything about us „look better“

Using botox to stop sweat is not the ideal, cause the sweat will go to some other area, the body needs to self regulate
@amisha678

The thing about trends is that not every "in" or "what we think is attractive" looks good on everyone. A muscular calf looks amazing , but trends take the muscular calves that don't look good on SOME people and turn it into a "you should get rid of your calf muscles bc they don't look good *and here are the pictures to go along with our claim*" trend. That's why I've never jumped ship whenever a new trend came along unless I knew it worked for me, or I genuinely liked it, or was willing to give it a try. But it was never a "I must have this orelse I'm not worth it" mentality no matter how much people would be like "why don't you have this?", "your nose is a little big" blah blah etc etc. Like so many people who get nose jobs don't even honestly look nice with their new noses but you see it was never about the nose bc if it was they'd have recognised that the nose they got doesn't suit them. But instead they live in this delusion that they have a nice nose and because of it have one less insecurity and improved confidence. You have to recognize if you genuinely are not okay with your nose or if you can live with it just like you would with a terrible but unbeknowest to you nose job. Another unsolicited piece of advice to people; don't look at your body parts THAT closely or with that much attention to detail.

Overall, pretty good video and nice series. Definitely if a person is following K-pop or if they're into skincare and body aesthetics, most of these procedures are pretty well known for the most part. I will say, one major detractor for me was the comment re: Michael Jackson with regard to glutathione. Extremely insensitive and unnecessary; it is well documented that MJ had vitiligo and so no he wouldn't have been looking for those treatments as he wasn't trying to inhibit the production of melanin. If anything, he would've been trying to find something to replace the melanin he had been stripped of by the condition. Considering how much inspiration K-pop takes or "borrows" from Black music and culture, hopefully there can be a bit more respect placed on one of our most talented and influential artists. IMHO..

EXACTLY! I came here to say the same thing, that comment was so nasty and antiblack it really rubbed me the wrong way. Like aside from them being wrong about Michael, they need to educate themselves on the origins of colorism (a.k.a. anti-blackness) and how that impacts Asian communities and beauty standards. Thank you for speaking up! ❤‍🔥

An example of a dramatic change with carboxy shots (plus other possible treatments) is FX's Luna. She had beautiful toned muscular thighs and hated it and was very aware of the nicknames that netizens gave her like "muscle-dol." She finally got the legs that she wanted though so I guess she's happier about it.

I'm not even that insecure about my body, still Kpop and the western beauty standard as well, has made it so hard for me to love myself though. I know that beauty is objective, etc., but I still can't stop myself from wanting to look like idols, I still can't stop myself from wanting to diet and thinking about getting procedures done.

Great video! I feel really sorry for young people coming along now enjoying K-pop because the standard of beauty is so strict. I was able to grow up in eventually embrace my features and understand that I would never fit the beauty standard. That made things easier for me. So I think that within South Korea where everyone is So I think that within South Korea where most people already the same race, that pressure has got to be enormous.
