As a 50 year old, I paid close attention to my mental quickness, short term memory, and abstract concept manipulation over the last 5 years and noticed an almost imperceptible decrease. The slight difference is often masked by my experience at a task, but I do not have the same mind I had in my teens and 20s. Someone who is not self aware could easily think the world is askew if they don't realize the difference is themselves.

If I may ask, how do you factor in a few other things I can think of: energy (I assume both volume and endurance could decrease, possibly more so than pure cognitive strength?), motivation and focus (I assume these would increase as a function of life experience), and generalized expertise (as opposed to single task expertise which you already note; this would be more like: are you better at learning, simply better at doing things because you approach it more smartly, etc.). As a 31 year old, I’m not going to pretend this is top of mind for me yet, but I do think often about what sort of work I am able to do right now in my young 30s but may not want to do in my 50s, and conversely what work I suck at now in my 30s, that I will be better at in my 50s.

@@jimbojet I have always been a low energy person. While I obviously am not as physically fit as I once was, I seem less adverse to doing physical tasks that make me tired, so I'd say it's a wash. My focus is certainly worse. I can't tell if it is a function of age or the world we live in. I am far far more competent in every way than I was when I was younger. I can learn quicker due to extensive crossover with old knowledge and am also more able to do almost everything. However, learning deeply is more of an issue than it used to be. For example I picked up some of my college math textbooks and reading a few chapters takes more effort than it used to, and complicated source books for gaming or long instructions are more odious. Some of this could be due to my decrease in focus though. What I was referencing in my OP though was strictly thought. Doing complex math quickly in my head, instant recall, blitz chess, other rigorous mental tasks, I don't feel that I am as good at them compared to my younger self. All that said, everyone's an individual so some of this might be different for you.

Kramnik is constantly searching for excuses and assuming people are cheating him. He loses? The guy played "too good". He blunders a win into a draw? "What is his rating? 92% is awfully high..." I would say chess has passed him by, but he's obviously still really good. I think he knows the kids are currently passing him and he doesn't like it, but his ego won't allow him to examine his own play or even be impressed at how well some kid from Pakistan is playing. Also, Kramnik should probably realize that people playing "above their level" _is how ratings improve._ When people outlplay their rating they win more and their rating goes up. That's literally what ratings are for.

Even as an amateur I can see the level difference between him and Hikaru/Danya(/probably even Levy tbh) at blitz. Just the way he uses his time, the way he strategizes etc. Hes almost too calm and reserved (on the board with the pieces, if not IRL). Im sure it works great in classical chess but it seems like he just suddenly gets super overwhelmed when time inevitably gets low

great teamwork between GM Kramnik who furnishes material and GM Nakamura who gets to have some fun with it. but i have to say, its kind of sad. The availability of easy cheating tools, the fact that we are nolonger sure of our assessment of the position, since the engines prove us wrong again and again, and the concern, maybe even paranoia that we are losing to an engine, not a human, casts even the best of us into limbo. Instead of recognizing that he misplayed the endgame, he finds his opponents play 'interesting'. We've been robbed of one of the appealing things about chess: the humbling way it makes us admit that If you lose its because you played worse, and there is noone else to blame but yourself.

Problem is MMR rating in chess you have to start from the bottom and go to the top. In online games adaptation, you play placement games, which put you into roughly your place, which is not present in chess because you can only play tournaments on similar level to you

However, at the point where he does get into a drawn endgame against Kramnik, he plays 12 non-losing moves. That's 20% of the game played with 100% accuracy, since any non-losing move in a tablebase draw is equally good. So no wonder his accuracy is over 90%.

*I really think the problem is he's gotta be pushing 60. End of the day your brain just functions about 2x slower at that age when it comes to making quick decisions.* He'd probably smoke or beat most of these opponents OTB or in longer time controls, but a 3 min game is just gonna be impossible for most 50 year olds, regardless of skill level. Just the age related slowness alone is going to take you down 100-200 rating points from what you're used to playing. His problem is mostly time trouble.
