Want to learn the basics of plein air oil painting? The term plein air comes from the french for in the open and describes the concept of taking your paints and easel outside and painting the landscape on location. Join me in my series of free informative beginner level videos, where I will teach you about the essential materials and techniques required to successfully paint the landscape en plein air!

Gloves
Oil Paint: Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Titanium White(150-200ml tubes)
French Easel
Paint Thinner: Gamsol or Oderless Mineral Spirits
Medium: Galkyd or Linseed Oil
Metal Brush Washer
Brushes:White Bristle Flat no.6,8,10,12 Filbert no.8, 10,12
Quality Paper Towels
Canvas: Stretched Canvas or Canvas Panel
Palette
Palette Knife

Man I MISS the woods!! I'm in Hawaii now and have decided to try some oil paints. I got frustrated with acrylics and gave up painting for decades. I love your limited palette and you are so right it is the best way to start for sure, and I may even always keep it very limited. I am new to your channel and this is the second one I'm watching. I like the compostion of the trees in the video. Interesting setup on the oils facing vertically to film better. I don't think I could do this in acrylic. Hope all the best and see your next video soon!

Awesome demo Kyle, found myself wondering if the focal point of the colours in the lake was a bit lost with the sapling grouping centre of the work but, just my observations. The lesson on varied brush strokes was good too and reflected light and colour. Well done mate. Cheers Bert from Oz.

In a way your large wide sweeps of setting the scene in monochrome is like those who make thumbnails beforehand. Only your thumbnail is huge. I guess if something didn't work in your comp you'd change it. I prefer your way of starting to the tiny sketches strategy because they're too small (for me that is) and what works in small scale doesn't always work big. Really really enjoying your demos, I think they help us by taking out the fear of beginning. Thanks so much. Best.

I know 2 important step to follow but you dont apply either of those 2. 1. Start from the back and then come forward and 2. Starts with the dark color tin and after the light colors thicker. I would like to know why.

You had me up to the 39 mark and looked pretty good, nice trees on the right, nice view of the water and your GREEN SPOT you wanted to focus on good sky and nice pines on the left. Then you went nuts and filled the whole thing full of what should have been brush up with mucky trees to the top off the canvas blocking the view of the 'green water and sky, lake and anything interesting you had taken the time to paint previously that looked good. Just my opinion this is the first video of yours I watched. Will look for more. Did you just get carried away curious.

Patty Shaw ,I'm sorry that you wouldn't have painted my painting the way that I have. I'm not exactly sure why you feel inclined to assert your negative opinion of my work but I imagine it has something to do with your way of coping with something going on in your life. It would be super cool if you could setup a second camera on your left or behind the canvas and switch between the two. So we can have a better view of both the panorama and your drawing.

Kyle, dig your work, man. Hey if you have time would you explain how background, middle ground and foreground value works? I mean do you add more white for the background, more color, you know how you make distance with value? Anyway, like I say, dig your vids and your painting. Thanks for the art.

gloobnord , thank you so much! All your colors(except very light areas, like the side of a white house) are going to become lighter in value and cooler, meaning more bluish, as they recede. Also value contrasts are going to become less as things move into the background so darks become lighter and light areas become slightly darker... bringing values closer together. You will never see a very strong yellow way off in the distance. So by using darker values more value contrast and slightly more yellow in your mixtures you can pull things forward. Hope this helps! So yes adding white and less yellow to colors is good for the background..farthest back is usually a light blue or purple.

I love the way you block the painting’s composition. I would stay away from putting verticals in the mid to foreground.

charles webster ,I only do the papertowel work when teaching beginner classes , thus forcing students to focus on big shapes first. I will eventually offer some more advanced videos showing how to transition to using all brushes:)

I have always wondered why some artists leave paint to dry in piles on their palette-- can you explain?

GFReamy yes, I paint often and sometimes the paint isn't completely dry on my palette so I can use it in the future. Eventually some of it dries and then slowly, the piles build up. I think it's the result of painting alot and not wanting to scrape off paint I might use in the future. Thanks for watching!:)
