Want to learn the basics of plein air oil painting? The term plein air comes from the french for in the open and describes the concept of taking your paints and easel outside and painting the landscape on location. Join me in my series of free informative beginner level videos, where I will teach you about the essential materials and techniques required to successfully paint the landscape en plein air!
Material List:
Gloves
Oil Paint: Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Titanium White(150-200ml tubes)
French Easel
Paint Thinner: Gamsol or Oderless Mineral Spirits
Medium: Galkyd or Linseed Oil
Metal Brush Washer
Brushes:White Bristle Flat no.6,8,10,12 Filbert no.8, 10,12
Quality Paper Towels
Canvas: Stretched Canvas or Canvas Panel
Palette
Palette Knife

some people will look at this and not understand and some will get it...some will make rude comments and some will praise....everyone's an art critic...lol...don't let negativity bring you down as a newbie we are hard enough on ourselves as it is...as I stood in a park staring at my very first blank canvas for an hour a woman approached me and said do you mind ? sure I said as she picked up a brush dipped it in blue paint and made a stroke...she said every painting starts with a single brush stroke, now you finish it and she walked away...I'm no longer intimidated...Kyles videos explains the process in its most simplest form so you can feel good about starting and he will get more advanced...my wife wants to throw away all my paintings so I put a 400 dollar frame around it and hang it....ill get better and so will you...good luck to all and thank you Kyle

So true, what you said about not ‘finishing’ a painting. More times than not, when I watch a painting video,I really like the painting better half way through than when the artist stops. One of my goals this year is to do more ‘starts’ as you say. 😉 I’m enjoying your videos!

I’m glad you put the birds in your paintings on occasion Kyle. I think it’s silly that people leave birds out just because they’ve been told it makes a painting too sweet. You certainly do not need to put a bird in every landscape painting, but when the bird is an integral part of the scene or enhances the painting I think it’s foolish leaving it out. Then you start painting trends. Which means you’re more interested in what people think then what you really believe.

Thanks for this lesson and the Mike Tyson quote. I paint and paint, and often am disappointed. A lot of that disappointment is from trying hard. I am also giving in and going to start using paper towels to start my paintings!
