One good tip I got from my Dad about coolant hoses. When cool, pinch them all over with thumb and a finger, especially near the heat sources. If the rubber is stiff you are good. If there is a soft section in the rubber that is easier to push in, time to change.

The LCD units were a problem when new, something about the adhesive, such that I got mine replaced under warranty. Years later, the pixels started disappearing again, a nuisance at first, then troublesome when you can't read the computer messages. After buying a $20 kit and tinkering with it to no end, turns out it needed a new chip board. So I brought it to a place in Canton, MA, though you can also send them there, too. They refurbish these LCD units for all car makes, and for only about $100, it seems they do stay fixed, no more missing pixels.

Also do yourself a favor when replacing vacuum hoses. Do one at a time, and go with silicone. They last longer and do much better with the heat from the turbos that these engines create.

Great advice on dropping the pan and changing the o-rings. This video motivated me to do it on my 2003 aero wagon at 139K, and it was needed. Next is to replace the MAF sensor which commonly gets out of adjustment and blows engines. Mine is 8% off according to my tech ii. Since it's only a $90 part and relatively easy to swap, it's cheap insurance to get a new one for higher mileage Aeros. I'm really enjoying this channel. Thanks Kyle!

My GM 2007 9-5 2.3t has 241,770 miles & has never had the alternator changed. & Unless Its the corroded cables which I'm about to clean & fix up, I'm pretty sure the alternator has finally failed. A week after I bought Pheonix, nearly killing me in the middle of an intersection, facing a semi 🙄😅 Thanks to your videos, I'll be replacing the valve cover gasket, dropping & cleaning the oil pan & pick up tube, bought a spare DIC & spark plugs for my trunk, bought a 5 pack of metal pcv valves & keep the spares in my trunk as well & she's finally getting her first transmission fluid change! Two/three years later & this video is still just as relevant for those like me!

Unfortunately the fuel pump can only be replaced that easy on older 9-5 models, 2006+ US models you have to lower the fuel tank sice there is no access from top
@amberlymartin4713
@amberlymartin4713 Жыл бұрын
Mine is a GM 2007 9-5 & I was able to access the pump by pulling up the back seat & opening the latch in the center 😊 However, I'm unsure where the fuel filter is. I know your comment is a couple years old, but if you know where the filter is I'd love to know so I can replace mine!
@bernhardjost
@bernhardjost Жыл бұрын
@@amberlymartin4713 Were you able to actually remove the pump from above or just access? I remember we fiddled around from above, but there was just not enough clearance pull it out without enlarging the opening hole. The older models (2005 and older) had a separate fuel filter somewhere along the fuel line on the chassis. On the newer models (like your 2007) the fuel filter is directly integrated in the pump assembly and to my understanding cannot be replaced individually
@amberlymartin4713
@amberlymartin4713 Жыл бұрын
@@bernhardjost You'll need to get a special tool (I can't remember the name) to remove the black lock ring first. After that, you'll be able to disconnect the pump & pull it right out! 😊 Ah, okay! I've had a fuel filter sitting in my car for over a month now. I checked under the chassis right in front of the passenger side rear wheel, but sadly GM ruined it for us! That's where I was starting to believe it was located. I've seen videos of others pulling the fuel filter out of the pump, but for other models. I've never seen it done on a Saab's pump. Thanks for the info! Hope you're able to get to your pump & you can get the tool at rock auto for around $10-$15

One thing to keep an eye on as well is the coolant bypass valve. Mine failed at 148k. Its a problem that will start with a slow seeping leak and drip along the hose and usually will puddle towards the firewall on the left side on the ground. And when it completely fails you'll loose pretty much all of your coolant! So a warning to others, address it before it breaks!

I will say that for the 06-10 9-5, there are a few differences. In 06 they changed the crankcase system and it doesn't sludge the engine. I didn't have to change the system on my car until it went over 200K. I've never replaced an alternator or had an oil pan leak on either of my 9-5's - both at 220K now. Both have original fuel pumps but the senders are bad and and unfortunately on these models, you have to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump. Food for thought for anyone looking at a 9-5. Personally I feel the 06-10 models are more reliable. I will also add that you should spend the extra $$ on the plugs and get the NGK PFR6H-10 laser platinum. You can get a solid 40-50K out of those. But no matter what, be sure it's a resister plug (note the R in the plug code).

No need to drop the tank on my 2007. Also, I have a transmission dipstick. November 2006 build. U.S. spec but unlike most, it is not E85 compliant. The E85 cars (which most are) is why I think they need the tank dropped.

Kyle, I did just find your site and I'm glad someone is out there holding up the faith on these. That said. I hope you can respond quickly since I'm about to purchase a 2005 9-5 wagon in mint shape in Boonton for $5k... While it is mint it does have 180K mikes.. The back story is this is coming from a gentleman who still is in business servicing Saab for a living... However, I have to admit I'm nervous... I've collected your list of items to review but the mileage is concerning. Radiator replaced, Transmission serviced. the folks who transitioned this to him have had all their service done at his place. And I worked with him for 15 years when I had my 9-3 convert. The issues I eventually had with that 9-3 was not the engine but everything else started to decay - including the interior plastics and hardware. I'd like to modernize the radio for bluetooth, carplay and rear camera. I hope that is not too difficult. Anyway, ANY thoughts would be appreciated... I see you are also in NJ... Thanks Ben.

My mother had a saab 9-5 from 00 that suffered a massive oil leak at 190 000 km (120 000 miles) and it was too expensive to fix so the car was scraped. Thing is she serviced it every year at a local company specializing in saabs, and she bought it new. You would think they would have known what to change to prevent leaks but maybe it was something unforeseeable.

I have a 2001 Saab Viggen, 146.000 original miles. I am third owner. I know this is the wrong place Keil to post selling my vegan but I thought of you when I saw you purchase your very first viggan last year or was it two years ago? I love this car so much but because of very serious health issues I do not have the time to bring this car back to its brand new restored self! It has been very frustrating because I 100% planned to keep it for the rest of my life It simply has been the nicest drive I have ever had. Because of this video 7 months ago I decided to buy a new alternator and and brand new fuel pump. I had planned to drop the pan and clean sludge out replace the seals and install the two parts even though they were still working. Since what I have is terminal and I have now since found out there is no cure for what I have I’ve been going downhill extremely fast this last eight months I hold the title to the car I have a mechanic if I needed one it’s the mechanic that the previous owner used he’s a really nice guy I have met him he only charges $90 an hour but I’ve never used them yet the car hasn’t given me any reason to bring it to him up until now I started having problems with the clutch going to the floorboard so I put a new clutch master cylinder in thinking that was going to fix the problem and now I have found out the reason why I had no clutch is because my system was dirty so I have two choices either have the car towed to the mechanics shop and have him flush the system out and put my new alternator in take care of the sludge and install the new fuel pump but honestly I just don’t even get to go out and drive anymore I’m going to let is cargo for a little under $3000 it’s a beautiful car my neighbors have been telling me whatever you do don’t sell that car it’s beautiful and it is but I’m just too sick to enjoy working on it anymore the car has been sitting for seven months going on eight now the car needs to be driven I will miss this car very much I think about this all the time last week I finally realized it is what it is I’m gonna have to sell it I need the money anyway for medical supplies and medical bills I live in Oregon Beaverton Oregon I don’t know where you live and I may be way too far away for you to come here but rest assured if you did I would give you an incredible once in a lifetime deal if you want me to give you pictures of the car just give me time to get them to you because right now presently my treatment is taking as much is 18 hours every day yes that’s right sometimes even 20 hours per day if I don’t do my treatment well let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty I am a United States Marine what I am fighting the world has never seen before this is something I got while serving our country My son is a corporal in the Marines right now stationed in Hawaii and I’ve been fighting with all I’ve got left in me to stay alive so I can hopefully see my son again whatever recess if you know Keil copy and paste and shoot this to his email if you would I would appreciate it Kiel is the one man that I know could make this car the way I was going to make it a brand new saab driving down the road for years to come Contact me with a voicemail at 503 502-5897 My name is Doug Thanks so much.. Nice video. For someone who is a novice and needs a repair person, what is the yearly expense on the car? Or what is the cost to update when you buy it at say 150k miles, and then the yearly assuming you put in all the money at the time of purchase. In future videos it would be good to know not only the cost of the repair but the time necessary. Is that in your other video? It seems like it would be a better car to buy from someone who modified it heavily since a person like this would know how to fix things as they arise.

Basically besides doing the spark plugs and auto tranny fluid I should not worry about anything else for a few years given the very low mileage . It seems that the issues start after 70-80,000 miles. However 20+ years old age will play a factor . It will not be my daily driver so i will pb be putting 3-4,000 miles/year

I just bought my second Saab, and now Im infected again withe the Saab Virus. My first Saab was a 95 combi 2.3T 2003. And a week ago, I was hooked again on a 9-3 Saab Sportkombi 1.8t, it was a low milage car 1 owner( old lady), all service done according to the service book, so I couldn't resit bying it. The car looks like new, runs like new, its really fantastic. I have just tune the engine to step 1, and with the automatic transmission, it runs like a Saab. The undercarriage is needed some attention, so sandblaster and zinkpaint, and a cover on top of that is already on order at a special workshop. I must say, I love the car, and will continue to treat it like my new Baby. Its something special with Saab, its like a virus, once you get hooked, then is no way out.

I'm supposed to be buying a 2007 Saab 95 with the 2.3. Only issues are its got 220k miles on it. There's a slight power steering leak. And an air leak it seems somewhere leading to or from the turbo. Apparently when you punch the gas peddle to the floor the engine light flickers and you can hear the air from around the turbo.. At normal speed and hitting the peddle normally it seems fine.. Other than that, the car sounds and drives good.. I'm supposed to decide within 12 hrs wether I'm gonna buy it or not. I'm looking around trying to find out if the air leak around the turbo is a minor issue or something big. Also would like to know if a bad turbo can hurt the motor somehow. Because if not i could use the car as is and not worry about it. Anyone with any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

So honestly what was their best year model? Under Saab or GMC? And what would you pay for a 2011 9-5 with 100k miles?
@KylePancis
@KylePancis 3 жыл бұрын
early 2000's best for the 9-5. some would argue the late 80's and early 90s was the be premium years. 2011 9-5 with 100k, 4-6.5k depending on specs

SAABs are not the best cars. But they are some of the most unique and cheap (in Sweden at least, got my 9-5 Aero for $1,400 last year) cars on the market. Quirky designs, good looking in general. But damn do they rust. My 9-5 is a giant heap of rust with some steel hidden somewhere in there...

Hi, i'm wondering if i should buy 9-5. I really love that car, and i spent about half year now to do the research about it. I'm still not sure which engine i should get. I obviously choosing between 3.0 V6 TiD and 2.3 Turbo, but i heard some negatives about the diesel engine. Any tips that could help me decide ?

Hey Kyle my 2003 Saab 9-5 aero high beams weren't working and the high beam headlight indicator wasn't working. I swapped out my headlight assembly with a used set. The RH high beams work now but the left still isn't working. I checked my fuses and the LH fuse was blown. I don't have the infamous orange relay in my car. I was looking on a forum page and it said that the 03 9-5 aero were know to have bad a LH headlight connector. Are you familiar with this ? I bought an iron soldering to check my light connector relay but I'm at my wits end I have to get my car inspection here in Maryland since I moved and I dont want to sell it.
