They do two runs on each stage (track) at slow speed in road cars which are slightly modified. That's when the driver and co-driver create the pacenotes describing each corner in detail (angle of the corner, hazards on the inside or outside, whether to cut the corner or not, etc.). Granted there are quite a number of stages which are used each year again so the drivers usually have a pretty good idea what's coming if they competed on the event before.

@ninetyy8 Жыл бұрын
the co-driver’s spend their career learning the tracks. the driver takes commands from the co-driver on how to go round the track so the driver can purely focus on their driving. It’s kinda crazy because the driver is legit putting all trust in his co-driver.

holy shit thats actually mad. i just thought theyd do a few practice laps or something
@justinl2009
@justinl2009 Жыл бұрын
@@L3WGReacts Yes, they usually do a couple recce (reconnaissance) runs to get the feel for the track and write down the directions. But yeah, OP's right. They need to learn a lot about track features and stuff to ensure their pacenotes are accurate.

@@justinl2009 Thats not accurate. in pre event drivers can test 1 or 2 tracks basically to get sense on nature of rally. Every rally has they own Nature, some are tarmac, some are dirt, some gravel, some are snow. So there is no testing whole rally only to get sense on it. co drivers get to drive tracks on low speed so they can mark it up. usually they keep past years notes with them, if new track is added then they do it.
@edwood1974
@edwood1974 Жыл бұрын
Yeah Justin L is right, if the crew is willing to pay there is a recce day were every stage is driven twice at 30 mph in road cars that resemble the rally car where they can write down notes about each corner and hazard, I should know after 30 years of helping run recce days from local rallies with just a few cars to rally GB. BTW, keep your dog on a f*ckin lead is a very common phrase shouted by marshalls

So, funny thing is, this aren't laps; for the most part they are stages (that may change year to year) though usually there's one showoff stage run in somewhat of a circuit or a rallycross track, and they don't practice them at all! They go through the stages (not always) before the event in a road car while respecting every road rule, during this time codrivers write the pace notes to later guide the driver through the stage at race speeds. The practice they get to do is with the race car on a test stage of similar conditions to what they gonna find in the propper event. Also you won't believe the safety on the top runner crash, remember the first clip of the video, of that car flying off onto a tree? It aldo fell down like 7 or so meters to a road below and both driver and codriver walked away themselves out of the wreck. It's crazy.

I grew up in a US rally family so this is all perfectly normal to me. It's not nearly as big as it is over in Europe but it can still be batshit insane. I never drove but I co-drove for my dad once in Minnesota and it was hella fun. Hopefully now that my brother's getting into it I can get a chance to do it again. It's definitely dangerous, I remember being at a rally and one of the other drivers died and my parents' friend died (this was before my time I think in the early 80s). That being said, there's a lot of safety involved including special helmets, suits, roll cages, and of course the HANS device which protects the head and neck.

Very late with this... but they run the stage which is point-to-point time trial on public roads, three times. First with normal car to write up notes, then once with faster practice car to polish them, the actual race "lap" is 3rd time the driver runs it through - and first time flat out, while co-driver reads out them notes to inform what's up ahead. Since they are public roads, people get to see them freely, and are just chilling out next to the road. The stages are usually around 20km long, but it varies between 5-50km depending on location. These are the best drivers on this planet, there are several clips where they dodge animals and other sudden situations - can hear the driver braking before that dog, to take the corner tighter and avoiding the hit... sick reactions and skills, it's unbelievable how tightly and accurately they take the corners under such conditions and with so little practice

Official WRC channel has bunch of onboard footage videos of the whole stages. You can basically see what the driver sees and hear the co-pilot calling out the notes.

Should check out some group B. Back when there was no rules about power or safty... some cars were upwards of 800+ hp with plastic bodies... MANY people died in group B before the comission banned it.

they do time attack and mostly they don't know the course because of little preparation given that's why they have the co drivers giving them the course directions while max attacking. yeah the drivers are the sickest when it comes to control in my opinion. because to attack at that speeds mostly 200kmph+ and mostly blind helyeah

You should find a video of visitors helping. It is so nice, that you can jump on the track and try to help as a visitor, when an accident happened. There are even fans who find positions, where they expect many failures and want to help the drivers getting back on the track.

no theres not often laps and cars are sent out with increments of time between them so you can actually have to possibly deal with passing other drivers and such through all this

Sadly many people bring pets to stages, and I also cannot find a reason why, even worse you don't wanna know how many of those people bring the pets without any lead or anything to keep them from going on the road.
