Hey Stonie! When you were training the lab with the fetch indoors. I noticed you held onto the dog and then gave him the fetch command and let him go to get his toy. Does this serve the purpose of getting him used to not taking off until he is allowed to.

Exactly the opposite...holding him makes him want to fetch more...

Hey Stonnie: I can relate with you at knowing that you have to let go of the dog, it's a heart thing and will always be a piece of you to go with the dog too. Dogs have a sensing of the human's that they can and do trust. Have this dog come back to you in time and he most certainly will remember you, showing love and devotion and big slobbery kisses. Indeed it is bitter sweet.

Stonnie, wonderful videos. using them to get my now 10 week old black lab trained up. what did you do to the clipped end of the wing to make it not nasty for inside? my other half is not excited about having a wing inside.

Aww so cute what treats do you use I was told just to give my pup lab who's 11 weeks her food no special treats ?
@jacobcalloway89367 жыл бұрын
Javi bella From my experience use food as long as you can until they act uninterested in it, my lab puppies normally get tired of food and I start using treats around 13 weeks.
@brendanarminio84387 жыл бұрын
I thought you were always giving them their normal food. What kind of treats do you use to reward them?
@timdorsey92267 жыл бұрын
Look at his "training young puppies vidoes where he explains that he uses 1/2 of that dogs daily food for training. Then he uses high value meat treats as high reward. IE baked chicken liver.
@coletousignant26227 жыл бұрын
Yes normal food is good

I would love to hear your recommendations of different breeds. Not just their intelligence, but their personalities as dogs too. Also about the different genders. For example, is it true that if you (the owner) are a male you are better off training a female (and vice a versa)? Thanks for the vid man.
@timdorsey92267 жыл бұрын
I would recomend if you have some spare time to check out a coursera class by Brian Hare from Duke Univeristy that is studying in great detail the concept of intelligence in K9s. It is very interesting and I think you will find the answers to your questions to be different than you would think.

I'm so glad I found your channel Stonnie. I've been using your Henry playlist as a guide to train my black lab, and he is doing amazing using your techniques. I had an issue where he would jump up when greeting people, I stumbled across one of your videos suggesting holding on to his paws and that has worked really well too. I do have one real nasty habit which I'm struggling with.. three times now he has brought cat poo into the house, with 2 young boys this is a real hygiene issue. The last 2 times I've reacted badly and shouted at him which I'm sure is not the best approach. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Shorten up your retrieves, make your initial practice sessions in low distraction environments, use a long line...
@blakeheller46038 жыл бұрын
Stonnie Dennis He does pretty well when I give him treats for retrieving but I'd like to ween him away from that so he can see the act of retrieving as his reward for being steady. Is this smart to do? Or should I just continue with the treats?
@StonnieDennis8 жыл бұрын
Once he has the idea of retrieving, it's all about practicing when he is full of energy, short sessions, gradually increasing distance, and emotional leadership...

What is your reaction to the concept that a puppy should get 5 minutes of exercise per month of life? Seems like your dogs get way more than that and my large dogs always have as well. We have a new rescue puppy who turned out to be much smaller than we expected and I'm worried about over doing it because of all the "don't over exercise your puppy" warnings online.
@StonnieDennis8 жыл бұрын
Unless your puppy has an obvious physical deficiency, that rule is a surefire way to rob your puppy of proper physical and mental development...
