Being an almost 50 year old man who has watched a LOT of television series over the years, I can definitively say that I have NEVER been so affected by the loss of a character before as with Matthew. As many others have commented, it broke me! A testament to the writing, actors, direction, and editing, how could you not feel something for these two and want them to have their happily-ever-after. I'm coming to this series many years after the fact (2022) but I can almost hear the collective sobs still echoing when this series first aired. I made the mistake of watching the season 3 finale right before bed. What a big mistake! Probably had my worst night of sleep in years! Thank you for putting this collection together to remember their journey together. DA is now one of my all-time favorites and you only get on that list if I make an emotional connection to the characters. My heart goes out to Mary (I know she's a fictional character but that's my point!) :)

First time I watched Matthew's death scene I was at work on my lunch break. I sat there at our break counter and my hand was over my mouth and I had tears in my eyes... but I still wanted to know what happened next so I kept watching...and I'm on my second watch of A New Era :)

Matthew probably intuitively sensed that beneath Mary's cold and hard exterior, there was a vulnerable young woman feeling trapped and powerless in the world. He didn't blame her for resenting him in the beginning. Once she began opening up to him, he caught glimpses of the real Mary. That's why he never stopped loving her.

Wow this is good!! He saw her for who she truly was. There was that one part where she said to him that you think me nice when no one else does. He said he's seen her naked and held her in his arms and he knows the real her.

I think true love is what Mary and Matthew had. They brought out the best in each other ❤ everytime I rewatch the show I feel every heart thumping , heart wrenching moment between these two. their chemistry is amazing and their story is one of my favorites . I don't believe in soulmates but Mary and Matthew were made for each other.

There's is truly a love story for the ages!!! The best I've seen in a long long long time in either TV, movies, or books. I didn't realize this until now and I'm pretty far into the series actually after Matthew dies. But, I always knew that she could be vulnerable with him and he would still love her. However I didn't realize the she begins to be vulnerable and open up to him very early on in the first season. Not until I watched this video and it goes way back.

The first time Mary went to the station saying good bye to Matthew and gave him small kiss on his cheeks I always thought Mary was going to confess that she’s still in love with him (she asked Anna’s opinion about honesty and how she should be honest with her feeling), but Mary didn’t confess anything to Matthew. She knew that Matthew already engaged to Lavinia. I was frustated with the show thinking how it could’ve been easier for them to be together if Mary was HONEST about her feeling. But then I realized, Lady Mary is always been a women with honor and pride, she wouldn’t ruin Matthew relationship with Lavinia. And If Mary had confessed to Matthew in that station scene, Matthew, as the same as Mary. He is also a men with dignity that wouldn’t betray his fiance. I think it was beautiful for them not betray their lover that time (tho Mary clearly didn’t have any feeling for Sir Richard). She and Matthew both potrayal of loyalty to their own lovers that time (Richard/Lavinia). I’m glad of course they finally ended up together after long journey they had gone through. They really meant for each other.

I’d love for a 7th season or 3rd film to be set many years later with the children grown up, George as the new Earl of Grantham, and Mary the new elderly matriarch ala-Violet. And the very last scene would be Mary finally passing away peacefully with her family by her side, and then cut to her young spirit wandering through the Downton grounds, and then she hears a familiar “Mary, darling” and she turns and there’s Matthew waiting for her. She goes to him, takes his hand, and kisses him. The End.

I thought about that as well but Dan Stevens hadn’t informed them yet about wanting to leave the show, or not signing a new contract. (His first contract was 3 years and he decided he and his wife and kids wanted to live in the US.) I hate that he left though because it’s such a magical show…. After he left it was never quite the same.

I can't watch a movie with him in it without thinking about what happened in Season 3. It definitely left a bad mark. But I have to say, it was the best possible exit for the writers. They cut Matthew off with a deep but clean wound that gave fresh drama to move the story forward another few seasons, despite losing half of its power couple. There's just no way he's the heir of Downton and still alive somewhere and left Mary. I regret that there isn't a version of S4-S6 where Matthew lived, but the writers are so incredible that they didn't let the abrupt exit become a hurdle to an amazing series and now movie series.

When Julian Fellows killed off Matthew, I swore I would never watch that show again. However, I was hooked on it and found I couldn't stay away. To this day I think that Matthew and Mary could have been given more time together. Oh, well, Fellows was the author, not me!

I was watching the series (2nd season) and looking forward to a happy ending in the future seasons for all the characters. Then, by chance, I discovered that Sybil and Matthew died... they're my favourite characters allong Anna and John Bates, I'm so devastated by this rotten spoiler that I'm dropping the series with a disappointed heart, I'm sorry because it had potential, but I hate it when actors drop series in the middle of the story for other projects (kind of fickle, you should be committed to your character) or when the story kill an important character for dramatic purposes. So far, it was one of the best series I had ever seen, so thank you for the seasons that I watched, they were a delight. I rather leave it there, with Sybil and Matthew alive and everyone together.

Mary was one of the worst characters on Downton. She never grew and expanded her character unlike Edith who changed so much. She was selfish, unkind, uncaring. She should have ended up with Sir Richard Carlisle. A strong man not Matthew. Matthew would have been miserable had they lived together 5-10 years. He would have been very happy with Lavinia. She was kind and sweet. The only good thing I can say about Mary is her clothes were always on point. Nasty, nasty character.

Go and hide under a rock then -- or watch Bridgerton, it's full of people of colour although it can't even be mentioned on the same page as historical accuracy. You can be ashamed of yourself for not realizing the greatness of the storyline and creation of this movie, wether they filled it up with black and asian people or not. Rural England in 1912. What did you expect? Downton Abbey won 12 Emmies and was nominated 69 times, can you even get a grasp on what it means? Not everything is about race and it's truly sad that you look at a six-season series, countless hours of work that real people put into it, amazing actors, directors, cameramen, screenwriters, and the only thing you can criticize in it is that it's historically accurate and shows how British people in the beginning of the 20th century lived and worked. I know that by your standards, history should be re-written and all kinds and colours of people should be inserted into it as much as possible to be politically correct but you have no right to disrespect other people's work with such a shallow form of "opinion".
