Hi Alek! Yes! Patience is giving the dog "agency", ie. a choice, going at the dog's pace. Yes, all dogs are different & need different approaches to training. That's why an initial assesment is so critical, to get a starting point with that individual dog. I love new training techniques! Never stop learning! In the woods today, no dogs, but, a horse. A huge horse at that. Dog was less than amused, and heard that same aggressive barking. Good times, with a nice deep water crossing.

I think Sully would fling me to ground if he saw a horse lol. It's bad enough when he sees a deer. My girls have been around horses, they are not a fan but thankfully stay calm.

I think you should become a dog trainer, speifically with Heelers. I see so many people getting Heelers on Facebook asking absurd questions that they SHOULD know before diving into the breed. You've raised enough of them to understand the breed very well.

I’m really nervous that my heeler pup will be reactive. What causes it and how can I prevent it?

Usually lack of practice is the main cause of it. Giving them plenty of positive experiences with people and other dogs when they are young and practicing being social can help but sometimes they will still react when older. Lots of practice before they are 6 months is my best advice but sometimes dogs can react due to trauma, like a bad experience with a dog, or in Sully's case he seemed to get worse after his one surgery. Some times they are reactive just based on their personality. Practice and train as much as you can while they are young.

My heeler is 18 months old. And oh boy she is picking up on some new terrible habits on top of her old ones that mostly went away but still there from time to time. She gets aggressive to random people all of a sudden, god forbid the person is jogging… this was never an issue but now it is. And digging EVERYTHING is a new thing, she digs her kennel, the couch, the bed, backyard 🤦🏻‍♀️ past two weeks have been rough.

I know this comment is a few weeks old but hope things are getting better! They can go through some stages for sure and surprise us with new reactions to things. I still can't believe Sully isn't fond of men in hats lol. They can be so picky with who they will accept. I really think there is just some people they don't like. Even once in awhile my social Gypsy will not approach a person from bad vibes she is picking up. Is she getting enough exercise? I wonder if boredom is causing the digging.

I would have freaked out if I was walking TWO dogs when a fight happened with another dog. I would not know what to do. Sully looked like an alligator snapping his way down the street. He can be so goofy!

😆 Alligator is very fitting for him! I don't know how I do it sometimes either. When I had 5 pups it's happened then too and I never understood any dog running into the 5 pack. Like did you really think you could take on the whole crew? Thankfully most of those they realized to back off but yeah, I'm getting to old for this lol

Yes, and I also use regular leashes. All my pups get trained on both and Sully is locked when needed.

Great progress! You are right about dog trainers, they really can be closed minded. I love that you are making great progress. I am sorry about that stupid Labrador incident. I am glad you and your babies weren’t hurt from it. Fun to know Chiefs name and glad the owner is understanding. ❤ I know that is helpful.

I was so happy he was cool with it. Noting like walking over to your dog and seeing a lady give commands and talking to three heelers trying to include your dog lol. Even though I know his name he will still be the flooster lol. He is so playful and love that Gypsy seems like she wants to play now with him. He gives the biggest play bows and his owner said he's very playful and not confrontational. He greeted us today again on our walk and jumped on fence to get pets. Dude is almost as tall as me!

@@TheHeelerMama I can imagine, some people get a little weird about that thing. Floofster is a fitting name for him. He really is large for a pure bred Husky, so wild. I bet Chief being playful is really good for Sully and Gypsy. The poor babies have had too many run ins with dogs that are not.

learn to NO from the diaphragm . they hear a growl or lower frequencies easier than since their bark is a higher frequency
