My MT-10 was one of the very early ones and was a pig at low speeds, Leo Vince 3/4 exhaust and a Rolling Road tune transformed that bike into a very well mannered thing at low speeds and even more of a hooligan when I opened it up, 154 at the tyre was a lot of fun with that crossplane engine. I had my CB650R tuned (derestricted) and now it guzzles fuel, even when I am just cruising. Would be nice if they could tune it for power while also keeping some of the fuel efficiency features turned on. I went on a group ride recently and I used more fuel than anyone else with my 649cc engine and there were people there with much bigger and more powerful bikes. They were also riding faster than me and still used less fuel. It's possible that maybe I used more because I was slowing down more for corners and therefore accelerating more when exiting corners but I also did some of the ride just cruising in 5th/6th and going around corners at moderate speeds. I am also 110kg all geared up so consider that too. While the bike runs great with the tune and makes great power, I still would sacrifice some of the smoothness for efficiency when I am at lower throttle positions (cruising, idle, commuting).
@I0ITuGI0IАй бұрын
There's too many variables, if you want it tuned to stop guzzling fuel then it might be worth talking to people who tune bikes like Steve in the vid to get more info on whats going on. Asking us in the comments section won't really give you that kind of indepth knowledge that Steve has to be fair.
@The.JZA.Ай бұрын
@ Agreed but tuners don’t want to talk just for fun. They want $$. I tried talking to the guy that tuned my bike and he basically told me to put it back to stock if I was worried about fuel efficiency. Kinda useless response. I asked him if plugging the O2 sensor back in would increase economy at low throttle positions and he agreed that it would but said “it’ll run worse because it will be trying to be lean like stock” and I said “sounds like exactly what I want” since the bike only uses the O2 sensor at low throttle positions and RPM but as soon as you start romping on it it’ll ignore the O2 sensor and just run from the map. Sounds like a win-win for me. I have been on two rides with the O2 sensor plugged in and so far it feels fine. I’ll monitor the fuel economy and see if it improves.

Steve is a well respected tuner and knows his stuff but unfortunately he has given you a bit of wrong info. You can see that his Dynapro is set for DJHP (check box top right of screen and bottom left on graph) which means it is measuring estimated crank horsepower. Turn that setting off and you’ll get a rear wheel figure of about 122/123. It’s there so that they give the same figures (as close as possible) to a Dynojet dyno.
@LambChopRidesАй бұрын
I can't comment on how Steve has configured his dyno.. but I've ridden it, its way more than 120 hp!
@motorcycle_workshopАй бұрын
@ you can download the operating manual for a Dynapro dyno from their website and that’s where it will state that with the DJHP setting the figures are estimated crank figures. Everyone with a Dynapro dyno (me included) runs it with this setting as you would look stupid if you had a dyno that gave a figure 17% lower than everyone else’s. Just because you observe the rear wheel spinning the drum of a dyno does not automatically mean you are being given a rear wheel bhp figure. ‘At the back wheel’ is the biggest misused phrase used when talking about dyno results.
@LambChopRidesАй бұрын
Yeah I get your point, I guess dyno figures are always based on the dyno setup, a lot of variables, I know air temp / pressure are also factored and adjusted in the power figures. Whats important is the before and after results. I know its more than 120 hp as ridden enough bikes to know what that feels like, plus Steve knows based on the other bikes he's run on there 👍

When I see this it does make me think how long before manufacturers throw in the towel, developing and marketing bikes that have to meet some ridiculously stringent noise and emission regulations, and still compete and be fun to ride they must be near the limit of what’s possible. Just bought a 2007 Kawasaki with 18,000 miles on it for $7,500, which came with a $600 receipt for a dyno tune in which they were able to tweak it up to 172 wheel hp. Just shows you don't have to pay too much for more power than you'll really need. Why pay $600 for a dyno tune to get 5 more unnecessary horse power?
