Hello Mr. Luke. I am a new Property Adjuster, I have a my first roof claim pending for me to scope, maybe tomorrow. I went online to see what tips I could get as a reminder on how to properly scope Wind/Hail roof damaged and some how, (God) I ran across this video. You was very detailed and I learned a new way to loos the shingles and a new tool to work with. Thank you so much!!!!. Although I am a little nervous my new career, I feel a better to know that there are genuine Christians around who center their work around God. As a new Property Adjuster, my focus is to perform all my claims assignments with God in the center. That's who I will be working for when I start getting claims. Thank you much.

I liked the video a lot. I just want to add, as a person in business for himself this is a job I would probably pass on. $200 for the liability to climb on your roof, repair it, clean up, and stand behind your work. Don't expect someone for hire to do this for $200.
@BacktotheBasics101
@BacktotheBasics101 5 жыл бұрын
When this video was made $200 was a lot of money, if a person schedules 5 to 6 of them a day once a month or so it’s still not a bad day, especially for then. My service call now is 375, so if a person scheduled 3 to 6 per day it’s not about living at all. It’s good filler work. Thanks friend, appreciate you watching the video and dropping by. I do agree with you by the way as well.

Any visable nail is prone to leaking. Caulk doesnt last as long as the shingle will. I would never face nail, or "storm nail" like that. But hey if it works for you then so be it.
@BacktotheBasics101

In North Dakota we get 80 mile an hour winds very regularly. On ridge cap particularly out in the country with no windbreak such as trees or whatever, most roofers that are native to North Dakota will put a store mail on all ridge cap and on the edge of the roof. I have been shingling for 34 years now and I have never seen a face nail leak. But it probably could I suppose. Thanks and happy trails Luke

Why all the unrelated text? Can't see the nail line because "the door to success" quote is blocking it!
@BacktotheBasics101
@BacktotheBasics101 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan, this was one of my older videos. The concept was not to show great detail on how to patch a roof, but to give people the encouragement that they could do this was my real goal. The text was related the door to success does have a label on it, it says push. People complain that they don’t have money, that’s because they pay people to do what they could do if they pushed. Some people don’t make that much money in a day to pay a roofer to come and patch the roof. So the quote is very relevant. I figured if people didn’t know to put a nail in the nail line they probably shouldn’t be on the roof much less on a ladder. I have since changed the videos so not as much text. Thank you for being kind and bringing this to my attention. I do appreciate it Jonathan. I hope this video did help you even though it had too much text on it. Stay dry Luke

As a professional roofer for last 30 years this guy is so wrong. Carefully remove and preserve existing cap. Take out all damaged shingles. Install to factory spec. Face nailing is an acceptable temporary repair. Emphasis on temporary. If you want to make it an ugly permanent repair put a dab of tar under shingles directly under each face nail location.
@BacktotheBasics101
@BacktotheBasics101 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct, this is a temporary repair. That will probably last the life spanned of the roof. In fact I know it will, I have almost 40 years of experience with Roofing in the same area. Is it it is what I do professionally. We have tens of thousands of happy customers and a waiting list of customers that wait for us up to two and sometimes three years. Most years we put on anywhere from 10 to 20,000 square per year. Steel and asphalt primarily. There are many ways to skin a cat. Stay dry Luke

For the most part I liked this video. Here's the rub, especially if you're DIYing this. You penetrated the water sheeting surface where $1.50 max of modern adhesive would have held that shingle down up to 50 mph winds minimum (if you didn't weight it down until cured, which would increase its resistance to directional wind). Yes a nail will resist water penetration to a point, especially after environmental heat adheres the asphalt to it, but it's 2018 (as of your reply to this person's comment). We have far superior roofing methods to our forebears. For the love of The Savior, three tab shingle is almost extinct. The first roof I "helped" put on 20 years ago was three tab (I moved things from one place to another, because they didn't trust me to drive a nail yet.) Guys, you're doing a good thing here. Don't taint it with hubris. mgoodell76 has valid concerns, and it would have been acceptable for you say either "I don't know, let me find out..." or to explain your order of thought. Part of this whole thing is humility and thereby gaining wisdom. That's why I watch so many videos and read so many articles about this craft. One simply does not know what they don't know. Yes, I'm rebuking you. You're wrong as far as the depth of human knowledge is concerned on this subject. You went a step further to assume that this person hadn't watched the video through. That's not right. You're definitely not going to see an RCV check from your insurance company if they inspect a repair done that way. Nor will the shingle manufacture honor a warranty on a repair done that way. I'm disappointed. Nothing more to say really, other than "drop your pride for a bit."

LOOKS TO BE DONE CORRECTLY: From someone who is a "professional amateur" in all forms of construction- after watching about 12 roofing videos, this video instruction seems to clearly illustrate how to correctly patch an asphalt shingle roof. And i've defintely seen a few videos that did not bother feathering the roofing shingles where they "Racked" or Block Stacked the shingles. This video is not that. From what I can tell, the only thing this video did not cover is how to fix the nail they hammered through.

You’re welcome for the free how to video, I hope it help you repair your roof and save you money. Each one of these videos takes me maybe two or three hours to edit. I was taught as a Young Christian man, to have tolerance for everybody, I love everybody. I have Jewish, Muslim, atheist, Amish, Mormon, non-Christian, gays, lesbians, & nonbelievers all as friends. I don’t agree with them on many different things but I love and respect them as people, do I get mad at them for doing what they believe is right in front of me? Absolutely not! It’s a free country they have a right to do anything they want to as long as there’s not a victim in a crime. So for you to get mad at me for being a Christian speaking about being a Christian is utter nonsense and you really need to get over it and stop wearing diapers and drinking warm milk! super sensitive people go nowhere in life! And you are being way too sensitive. I expect Jewish people to act like Jewish people, and you should expect Christians to act like Christians. And us as Christians love people and we would never want anyone to go to a Devils hell... so therefore we would try to witness to anybody we could. It’s called tolerance. I don’t know you but I love you my friend. Stop being so sensitive. You’re welcome for the FREE how to video to Save YOU money for you and your family. Luke
