I love Britain although I am german. But there is nothing better than the Queen, roast beef, yorkshire pud., emmerdale, corry etc. Keep on you Brits, stay the way you are and keep your wonderful traditions and of course the Pound...... and keep driving left! Looking foreward to coming back to my 2nd Home Britian in September.... God save the Queen

this song to me is what Britain is, it's what made Britain great and what makes it, to this day, still a real power in the world. we embrace the strengths of those who join us, we don't segregate, yes we made mistakes but in the end we accept. i am proud to my very being to be a Brit because despite all the mistakes, we endure, we persist and we are stronger for all the different peoples that make Britain great

What a magnificent night to be part of. I learnt this Anthem 75 years ago when I was in the Australian boys choir. I will never forget that great night when we sung it at the Hobart Town Hall Hobart, Tasmania.

I am proud to be British!! Even though I now live State-Side with my three younglings and my Husband, I always watch Last Night of the Proms and this song along with Rule Britannia gets me every time - makes tears come to my eyes because it is such a rousing and touching set of music - quintessential Britain. Long Live the Queen!!

I'm an American too, and like you I admire friends who celebrate their own countries, same as American patriots celebrate ours. Seeing the audience, whether Royal Albert Hall or in the parks, singing "Land of Hope & Glory" and "Rule Britannia" was moving. I also liked how how the Brits shared our respect for other nations' nationalism. While most of the flags being waved were of course British, all the foreign visitors waving their own flags (USA, Brazil, Japan, Lebanon, multiple European, etc. etc.) were welcomed as part of the Brits' celebration of patriotism. Even before the NFL's spoiled millionaire brats got into the issue ( #ProtestOnYourOwnTime ), I disliked the trend of celebrity soloists singing our national anthem while the crowd shuts up, instead of just the band (or recording) playing while the crowd sings the anthem. The Brits' Last Night of the Proms understands the audience singing the patriotic lyrics is essential; I wish American corporations (like NFL) arranging our own National Anthem performances would embrace that reality.

While in Grad school, I was invited to a week of these fantastic concerts. Thrilling, humorous, and exciting. The audience always jumped right in at the slightest provocation. So much for the "aloof British". I met none of those.

At last I learned those lyrics! So "...wider and wider..." smacks of imperialism. Every bright side of the Sun has its dark side of the Moon. I can't help seeing the glory of the Spitfires downing all the Emiles, H-111's, and Stukas on that 15th day of September 40 when I hear this music. The Union Jack and its anointed RAF stood ALONE for civilization against a barbarous world. Rest in peace Sir Winston! Thank you Sir Edward for this unforgettable music. And it's a French frog saying all this!

Correction: Pomp and Circumstance* (not plural). I don't care who my statement angers, what was done to Elgar's composition is akin to making another Brit Tradition by taking Mozart's "Symphony # 25 in G minor", and turning in to a Public House drinking anthem.

@ketsan

Very American of you to think that monarchy is about an individual.
@ChristmasTrax
@ChristmasTrax 10 жыл бұрын
ketsan You appear to be confused. I said the National Anthem is about one woman and not a country. I never said the monarchy was about one woman. I don't understand how saying what I said is very American? Please, do explain.
@ketsan
@ketsan 10 жыл бұрын
ChristmasTrax Well it's quite simple. The National Anthem is not about one woman, it's about one office of state. It's about having a reason to look up, even if the reason is slightly dubious and largely theatrical, and realising that being able to look up, even in total scorn of the institution at least means that we're not like people from grubby little republics who all want to be equal and end up dragging each other down into the mud. A country is an entirely too abstract focus for a national anthem, and in fact a bit narcissistic, collectively patting ourselves on the back for being British like some isn't the way to go.
@ChristmasTrax
@ChristmasTrax 10 жыл бұрын
Looking at your statement about republics being grubby likely means that your views are right-wing and my views are centre left so we're unlikely to agree with each other. I have to say I disagree with a lot of your views and rather than ending up in an endless debate, I feel it's better if I try to explain what I was initially saying. I feel that the current national anthem is about one office of state as you put it. A anthem about a royal family/office of state is not relevant in a event such as rugby/football match and is more at home in an event to represent the royal family e.g. the diamond jubilee. Some of the commonwealth nations have the right attitude in having a national anthem which represents their country and then a royal anthem (god save the queen) to represent their head of state.
