Ashcrofts video • Differential Build At ... Okay, sometimes you have to bit the bullet and admit that maths is important. If you can't use your head use a calculator. Two methods of measuring the pinion height.

The shim wasnt 0.095?
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
No, that'll be the correction to the shim(s) to make it correct.
@red90rover986 жыл бұрын
But you wrote and used 0.95, not 0.095. Check the video. It is quite clear.
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
Yes you are quite correct. Sorry. i need to correct that.

yup. maths screw up there. I see it. Thanks for pointing that out.

When I was preparing for this job, collecting the necessary stuff, I wondered where I could find an untouched machined surface. Then I realised that I had a brand new crown wheel that needed fitting, which is an excellent base. Chris, as long as there are Land Rovers on the road, your videos will keep helping people! Thanks for your excellent work, again!

Very informative, measuring the pinion height is open to a lot of accuracy errors, what a bloody fiddly job!
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is. As just noticed I have made a mistake which would show up once shims were fitted. Glad there are folk awake to realise the mistake. Video to follow about that.

So, it can be done a lot easier. Land Rover diff pinions are exactly 3" (76.2 mm) from the carrier bearing clamping face to the top of the pinion. It has always been this way. It is a simple number to remember. You simply need a straight edge and a depth gauge (regular calipers).
@red90rover986 жыл бұрын
This useful information was provided in the Series 1 and 2 manuals and then after that they started to tell you to use these custom height blocks. But...nothing has changed. The diffs are all still the same and no special tools are needed.

There are 3 different heights for nominal pinions, one being the Salisbury axle. then there are the machined plus 3 thou and minus 3 thou to take into account if these pinions are encountered. This is the defender and discovery 1 diffs. The D2 and Later Defenders again are different.

The different heights are for the different bearing diameters used through the years as the blocks measure to the outside of the carrier bearings. The 3" from the bearing centerline never changed (for Rover style diff centers) and can always be used. You just need a straight edge and a depth gauge.. It must stay the same as the ring and pinions never changed. Salisbury is different. That follows standard Dana 60 protocol.
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
I'll get a depth gauge and we will explore that. Thanks for the heads up.
@red90rover986 жыл бұрын
Salisbury/Dana 60 should be 3-1/8" (3.125").

So Chris, what is the height (the pinion block width from the pinion to the journal) as shown with the white metal bar, would't that be a useful measure? Then we could get a precision engineer to make us one for a fiver!

Hi, I'm just wondering about something. Are the front and rear diff's different on say the Discovery and P38s? I got a replacement diff (ordered the correct part #) but I noticed the internals rotate the opposite direction. However the output rotation is correct so it does work (I did fit it and test). Would it make difference in wear and stuff? Thanks for your input and time.

they are different but if you look up Megasquirt on you tube he should be able to help you

Great vid I installed new yukon gears and posi carrier and my backlash varies 5 to 8 thousands on certain parts of the gears is that normal?
@dysekmarcoski47306 жыл бұрын
Big Chris, desperately in need now of the final diff overhaul vid carrier assy/backlash set up please if you can? When is it coming please? Ta v much.

I said in the series. Don't strip anything until I have finished the series. Please be patient.

Instead of pressing in the new race, measuring, then remove it to re-shim and then press it in again, couldn't you take the old race and machine off some from the outside so it slides in and out, use that to get the measurement right, then press in the new one with the correct shims?
@trailerfitter26 жыл бұрын
you'd be better with a new bearing race, but it would work.

This is clever.

no you can't buy a pinion height block tool from anywhere these days. Easier to have one machined from cryptonite!
