I AM a LR tech, a couple tips I can give that would have helped you get better results from your leak detector. First off, I ALWAYS remove the lower engine cover. Allows me to see and put hands ON the compressor and lines. Second, On passenger side of vehicle you can remove the cabin air filter. That allows you to probe (carefully) the top side of EVAP. While your there you can peal back the carpet for access to the drain tube to probe carefully the bottom side of evap. It is also interesting to note that LR's ALWAYS seem to leak from EVAP, Condenser or the service valves. Compressors also leak but NOT as often. They usually internally self destruct. That tiny side panel inside the wheel well is useful but not fun and difficult to remove. Its better from the bottom of engine.

Thanks to you I was able to find the leak on my truck today, I reckon. After recharging it today and driving the truck a bit I left it till dark. Then went out with a UV light after sunset and had a look. Sure enough, the low side schrader is leaking. So pleased that I do not have to pull the evaporator, although I have to seal up a crack in the pan as it froze due to a clogged drain. But it is doable. Kind regards, South Africa

One of my favorite calls on car talk was someone trying to decide whether to get their kid a land rover or another car. I can't remember the other car but it was a honda civic or something. To settle the matter, one of the host calls his son and asks, would you rather have a land rover or a civic. The kid immediately says land rover. The host then says, by the way, you'll be responsible for paying for maintenance. The kid immediately changed his answer to the civic.

When my oldest grandson was about 5 years old we would go over to my nephew's shop. The shop was mostly high line imports. My grandson could tell you what was wrong with a Land Rover. He would point to the grill and say it's written right here. The strangest problem I ever saw on a Land Rover was loose cylinder liners. Cold the engine ran fine, but as soon as the engine got a little warm the liners were hitting the head.

Really well done work, Ray. I suspect your customers realized they had found a good, honest mechanic who is to be trusted, and better to get it fixed than risk total failure of the rest of the system on their fancy BMW. I have what you may think of as the exception to your rule about European Cars. There is little in the world that could be easier than my 1990 Volvo 240DL wagon. As long as you do not need to touch the hater blower or heater core, they are the simplest of cars. Timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and all 3 front seals can be done in less than 2 hours, start to finish. I have to admit that the 17 litres of brake fluid to flush the lines is a bit much, but not difficult.

Tip: When checking vent temps put the blower on one step above the lowest speed. The more time it takes air to pass thru the evaporator the colder the air. I have gotten 28° f in some vehicles after service. Always check for leaks at the moisture drain under the hood at the evaporator. Remember refrigerant falls, check under lines & under compressors.

Just had my ac recharged after being at a different shop... They did a vacuum, then a pressure test exactly for that reason.
@actually5004
@actually5004 2 жыл бұрын
@@Crack84baby The pressure test you got was to verify operating pressures which won't tell a tech if it's leaking slowly because the duty cycle on the compressor will increase until the desired pressure is met regardless if it's leaking. AC service rigs are only built to leak test with a vacuum, the pump in the machine can't generate anywhere near enough positive pressure to adequately leak test at the pressure the system normally runs at and still measure leaks. Besides that, the other function of the vacuum leak test is to evaporate and evacuate any water in the system- water will get into the PAG oil and ruin an AC system faster then any leaky O-ring.
@Crack84baby
@Crack84baby 2 жыл бұрын
@@actually5004 well actually... No. There is a back story i didn't tell because... Tldr. Forst shop lied and said it was leaking when it wasn't. So they put 19bar on the system and checked after several hours to see if it indeed still held high pressure. Of course after a vacuum test for the same purpose. The system was working before first shop but with a reduced capacity. I asked them to charge it. But they fucked up more stuff so i no longer trust them . I'd do it myself but I do not have a set of gages and in Germany they are really expensive. So yeah.

That sensor tool can't be much use if it is not detecting a visually apparent leak of refrigerant !!!

That refrigerant is also flammable. So be careful. There is reports of numerous engine fires in Europe since they started using that crap. Surprisingly, if you add about 10 to 12% of R134 to the 1234, and they will work together, the fire risk is greatly reduced

Ray , just wondered why you don't use a tire valve stem tool to remove schrader valves . They have the arms to make it easier to loosen and tighten .
@matthewmorrone883

Tire scraeder valves are different from AC scraeder types. Tire valves are smaller. AC ones are larger and use a different tool. Hooe that helps.

A pal of mine wore a stainless steel watch strap which he inadvertently managed to short out the starter solenoid and, because he left the car in gear (1st), because it was parked uphill, it proceeded to run over him before the strap broke. I mention this because someone posted a no jewellery tip. I used to work in broadcasting when glass tellies were the thing. We wore no metalwork because 25kv from a TV hurts. Love your videos.
