This is a video I will definitely want to watch again and again. It has so much valuable information. I am so thrilled of your teaching. As you have said practice is important but confidence is very important - these are golden words! Thanks to your videos, my confidence in painting has increased. The explanation about perspective was great. Only a great talent like you can explain like this. Thank you a lot!!!

This is just like listening to Evie, Stephen’s wife on A Late Show. Delightful. How cool is it to hear your wife in the background. A great addition. I hope you guise enjoyed this as much as we did. This is an adorable sparkle to your already relatable videos. I feel at home. A silver lining to the difficult cloud that is the pandemic: we are getting to know people in ways that I hope we don’t lose after that particular cloud finally passes.

I only discovered you last spring Mr Davies and I adopted a rather scattergun approach to watching your KZbin back catalogue and as at the end of last November I’d only watched about 25 of your videos. Then along came the festive break and I finally had a chance to watch all the videos I hadn’t seen yet. I put off watching this one till the very end because I thought the tree looked far too complex for me to get my head around but I am so glad I did because it was hugely instructive. Thanks so much! I think the only videos I now definitely haven’t watched are the portraits - I reckon they are a step too far in complexity for this novice painter!! I’m so glad I discovered you, you are just brilliant 😁

Loved your comment: "Tree Trunks don't have to be brown, they can be pink, or any color you like" If only more art teachers used your approach, I think we'd see a whole lot more creativity! Thank you for your lovely demonstration of how to "play with paint" to make an idea of a tree. Love the playfulness and the wide open interpretation that is granted. Blessings to you Stuart!

Stuart, Masonite is a type of hardboard, a kind of engineered wood, which is made of steam-cooked and pressure-moulded wood fibres in a process patented by William H. Mason. It is also called Quartrboard, Isorel, hernit, karlit, torex, treetex, and pressboard. I have painted on it and it is more stable than MDF (which is much softer), but it can warp if not framed properly.

Hi Stuart - I am from South Africa. I only recently discovered you painting 'lessons' - and I love every minute of it. I really like your style of painting as well as your great sense of humor. May I suggest that you move your camera half a meter to the right and one meter upward. (Simply place the tripod on a table.) It might not solve the visibility problem completely - but it should leave your right hand with the brush on the canvas visible over you right shoulder. It should also get rid of the bright light glare that you sometimes get in the top half of the canvas. Please continue these enjoyable videos ...

Many fine tips and tricks about the choice of marerials and not to forget very nuanced demonstration of all the different movements and subtractions you use to create both the composition and all the texture and colors with a very limited palet.- I especially enjoyed the discussion on MDF and good quality plywood. I also have used MDF but stopped because of the heavy. Weight. I use canvas now and linen, but I will try plywood and see how that feels. Wonderfull inspiration 🎶💚🎵🎨

YOUR TREE HAS CHARACTER ALMOST LIKE AN ENT.....I LOVE THE LAID BACK APPROACH OF JUST ALLOWING IT TO FLOW FROM YOU....I THINK YOU HAVE TAUGHT ME SOME OF THAT, NOT EXACTLY LIKE YOU DO, BUT WITH A KIND OF WILD ABANDON....I HAVE MADE SOME REASONABLE LANDSCAPES THAT BRING ME SOME JOY......DEFINITELY LESS STILTED THAN IN THE PAST AND MORE EVOCATIVE....

MDF is a different composite from Masonite, but you should put gesso on front and back to seal it from moisture as it will warp, or it can encourage mould. Thank you for your lesson I learnt a great deal, and love the easy method of doing grass, why hadn't I thought of that!!!!!

I know you've probably already thought about it, but you might be able to tackle your percieved issue of being in the viewer's way using two mirrors--one to get around your body & another to correct the image reversal. Just a thought to pass on, fwiw. To be honest it isn't really something I notice anyway for me, as long as you move aside frequently. Regardless, I love watching your videos. Very inspirational! Thank you for posting these!

I don’t know if it’s the brand of oil paint, the medium used, or the type of plywood you use but I’ve tried to imitate your style and I just can’t get the paint to flow like that. Though, I have been using linseed oil. Maybe I’ll try alkyd. I use 3mm plywood sheets, 12x16, with quality gesso and mostly Winton paint.
