Me explaining, How to understand Sunset colour, or light and colour at sunset.
What to look for a couple of hours out and predict, what is about to happen.
See the development of subtle colour at dusk, and watch the advancement of the earth's shadow, as the phenomenon of "The belt of Venus" forms. What an incredible sight to sit and watch.
This video will help explain the sequence of the colour palette, during the golden hour - as the sun sets behind the camera... not in front of it!

Thanks Keith. This one actually took a bit of working out, how to get the point across. the only way i could do it - was take NO photos!. Im about to try another one explaining the process in reverse for Sunrise! Ewan

That would be the best explanation of sunset/sunrise light, and the Belt of Venus that I have ever seen Ewan. Well done.

Thanks Andrew. And i never even took a photograph!. I thought that by concentrating on the message, it wold focus the attention on the message. I had been thinking of doing a sunrise one as well, focusing on the timing relationship between sky colour and morning glow, and how the colour disappear when the direct light, hit the hills.

Thanks Craig - the watching is often the best part, which is why i usually pitch up HOURS before i shoot just to sit and observe (how sad am I? - Living life on the edge! LOL) I think my primary thinking is that ill go and watch, and if its right - ill take a photograph, rather than going to TAKE a photograph, if that makes sense. Maybe i have my priorities and shooting plans all back to front! I thought that this one was more at the pace of one of your vids... Regards Ewan

There’s nothing sad about that at all. Being in a beautiful location and watching life roll by sounds perfect to me. It’s good that you don’t feel pressurised to take a shot when the conditions aren’t right for you. It’s never a wasted journey though, is it? Cheers.

Beautiful Ewan, love how you explain things in a simple way but at the same time you get the point across. Now every time I'm out shooting the sunset I'll remember the science behind those magical moments. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Bernard. I know the point i am always trying to make and i try and make them valid each time (which is why i dont churn out many videos (im obviously not that creative or imaginative)). As i was filming this - I wasnt actually sure that i was making much sense, as i try not to be too technical. This will be the first time i have done a vlog and not shot anything. It was a lovely night and beautiful colour, but that didnt mean it would have been a nice photograph... which is why i elected to not to. Glad you found it helpful! Thanks Bernard Ewan

I love watching those colours shift across the sky, especially when the light catches the high altitude clouds after the sun has gone. You see it starting to glow to the east and then watch as it chases the path of the sun and hopefully to where your frame is trained. Really well explained and illustrated, even though you do cause havoc wherever you go!
@EwanDunsmuirImages

Cheers Simon. "Chasing the path of the Sun" is actually a really good explanation for it, as thats exactly what it is ! This is definately my favourite time of the the day, and i think i shoot just a little bit later in the evening than you do. Our Co - photo shoot is gonna be interesting! = ) And... yep - i seems to upset the equilibrium all over the place indeed! LOL Cheers buddy! Ewan

Thanks for explaining, we had incredible yellow and and orange colours in the east few nights ago in Auckland trying to shoot the super moon, also coincide with the sunset and moon rise few minutes apart.. this really explain why the sky & moon had the bright orange glow. happy shooting :)

Thanks for that one. I'm the one usually looking west rather than east. I think you didn't get much of a sunset because the sky was too clear to the west. Pray for high clouds and a clear sun going over the horizon. Grumpy farmers the world over. I don't know what the land access rules are in N.Z. Back home they've got to have a darned good reason to ask you to leave and even then I've only walked out of a field once - I'd already got the shots.
@EwanDunsmuirImages

Thanks Iain. I really wanted to explain the BOV for this one which is the atmospheric diffraction receptor. The clouds would change it again and that would be a whole new video. NZ - yeah... pretty much the same here re land rights but i suspect farmers in UK, might be more prickly than those here. LOL Ewsan

@@EwanDunsmuirImages Covid, no international travel and the pressure of staycations has brought land access into focus here. Farmers in England/Wales/ NI can still kick you off their land without reason. Thankfully in Scotland the walking boot is on the other foot, essentially you'd have to be damaging their livelihood or infringing on their privacy for them to 'ask' you to leave. I've worked on a farm so I see it from both sides; as a photographer I presume access but stay away from buildings/livestock and then wave at the grumpy farmer on his quadbike😊

2 jaekets, yer getting soft loon, that's T-shirt weather :-) Nice and clear explanation of the light, it is a great time of day. No need for another great photo you explain things well and your technical knowledge is A1. One day I might catch this light myself :-) Oh did I mention Mt Taranaki, keep up the good work.

Hey Andrew. I am GETTING soft, cause i used to be as hard a s nails... NOT! The temperature here seems to be different ot scotland in that there is so-o-o much humidity here, it feels much colder that the mercury suggests... hence the two coats. Just a precaution. I was tired also so didnt want to get crook. Im sure it looked a lot warmer than it was! Thanksthough Andrew - I appreciate your support! Ewan

Hey Neil, it wiks at both ends of the day. This one here was sunset, but i did an 'on location' vid of it at ount Doom, at Sunrise, which shows the same thing but in reverse, and i am able to spend more time explaining it a little better with some proper reference.
