Long drive, get the top shelf tools, not most expensive, just the higher quality ones needed for special and precision tasks... It's a fine art learning where to get the tools to turn a job that's a PIA into one that's just a regular job, all because that one tool... As an example beyond snap rings and specialty wrenches, ever see how many kinds of riveter tools there really are? One gets by playing being triple jointed with the regular cheapie or one gets the right one, pops the rivet in and moves on. Don't get me started on the bewildering assortment there actually is just for rivets...

A wild TTC appears Personally I'm a big fan of whereever possible throwing circlips right in the bin. And replacing them with e-clips. I'm better at not shooting e-clips into low earth orbit by mistake.

I have a 50 yr old pair (I/O) of KD from the 70s. They had replaceable tips. Served well until I lost most of the extra tips! Now I mostly use the external for separating EC3 connectors.... and the occasional snapring. I remember paying "a lot" as a teenager, like $15. (Back then you got a CASE of Genessee Cream Ale for 5.25) Paid for themselves 100x.

Lang makes really good stuff. I’ve got a set of their pry bars. The biggest(5foot) I’ve got, I’ve literally stood on, jumped up and down and held my big ass no problem. Pity the ball joint still didn’t budge but that’s another story.

I was a mechanic for 30 years .I bought most of my tools at yard sales and flea markets. I did buy truck tools but with junk tools I could bend and twist tools to reach that one bolt that no one had a tool for.

As a new subscriber, got your name from Doc, as he trades info with you. I have the Lang set, good tool. As for my use, I prefer the snappy brand, easier to use and diff angles. I got some of the earlier HF Icon pliers. Gave them away. Most of my work is HD, and have some other Lang tools. Lang is very good. Thanks again!

I've been lucky enough to have a couple sets of proto's for the last 30 years, I haven't had a need to look into them. Besides my giant ratcheting ones, love them, they last forever. But those Lang's look nice at a reasonable price. Looking forward to the long term follow up. The proto's can take grinding in a new tip if you do it cold.

@FunkFPV yep, I'm lucky in that I am retired, with no coworkers to "borrow" tools, and I don't have to earn a living with my tools, so the expense in some way is less relevant for me but I fully understand and agree that your tools have to earn their keep as you have a family to care for. I have this set. Working in the diesel fleet field these are essential. My problem with the screw style is that with enough force, the screw backs itself off and sometimes the pliers become wobbly. Lang also makes the turn style pliers and it sales for about the same as the harbor freight ones

I bought a pair of lisle snap ring pliers and broke them at the hinge doing a wheel bearing. They had some quick flip action to change between internal and external. Needed a replacement, thanks for the video.

Some good info. I'm a carpenter and work on the equipment I own and am always struggling to find the one pair of snap ring pliers that halfway fit. So, I think it's time for a set. But the real question is how well do they hold when the ring is being held with just the tips and the tips not pushed all the way through the ring eyes. The Lang 3595 set is the same as those old craftsman’s you have, and they call it the v-notch set and it’s about $60 more versus the thumb screw

I got that exact lang set i think they’re a really honest set my snapon buddies say they’res are better what the little Ive used them seam to be if id rebuy the lang snap ring pliers id buy the twist lock style they make both i dont like the screw style cause i think the loosen off when u got a stubborn snapring that needs a little more time i find it super annoying why i would go for the twist lock style

I purchased the $150 Icon back in June. Sad to see I paid an extra $50. The Icon and Lang tools look exactly the same and both are made in the USA so you know they are coming from the same factory. They are good enough for someone who only occasionally needs them or needs a set right now.

It wasn’t easy finding USA made snap ring pliers. And they are very similar. I don’t necessarily use them daily or weekly. But having a complete decent set is a huge benefit.

Lang warranty is either nonexistant or an outright hassle. At least for these snap ring pliers. The only real lesson is to just buy anything Icon hand tools on a 20-25% sale which happen pretty regularly, but definitely still skip anything that's still overpriced on sale or just outright mediocre in quality relative to the price. Icon snaprings would be $112-$120 on those sales and I've seen like 3 different ones since the beginning of summer. I personally wouldn't bother with any of their Icon chrome/impact socket sets. Honestly think their Quinn master bit sets and impact socket sets are the better value a lot of the time. $65 for the Quinn master allen/torx/etorx socket set was an absolute steal I picked up a week ago. Their master 1/2" impact metric/SAE set would've been an absolute steal on that same 30-35% off sale as well, I'll eventually kick myself for not just buying it at the time. Their ratchets are OK, but there's so many other options that unless you're real close to the store and want to really abuse them then you may as well skip them for Gearwrench or Tekton. Lots of their hand wrench sets cost too much vs like Tekton too. Though they're still a good alternative to Matco if you get into those extra long flex head sets. I paid $75 for their 58" Mayhew rebrand pry bar on a 25% off Icon sale. It's $108 for the actual Mayhew on Amazon. And Matco rebrands the same thing and asks $250+ for it which is truly nuts.

I think they are actually made by Milbar/Imperial for HF and Lang. Not 100% certain though. Maybe Lang is the OEM. That being said, I really do prefer the quarter turn to the screw. I grabbed the Icon with a 20% coupon. I already had Protos to compare them to and can say there’s no dip in quality. Good product no matter whose name is on it.

@@FunkFPV they definitely do make a lot of things. Milbar is big in aviation and has had those snap ring pliers forever. I remember a Mac dealer saying Milbar made theirs. Should also mention Milbar and Imperial are subsidiaries of Stride Tool. So I believe you will see the Milbar version branded Imperial.

What are your thoughts on the style with replaceable tips, where they give you one tool and a bag of tips in different sizes and angles? I get having the full set ready to go if you are working with snap rings often, but I feel like most folks would do fine with the occasional ring having to swap the tips.

You haven't lived until you tried to use the cheap "universal" snap ring pliers that come with tiny hexagonal pins that are bent into various shapes with somewhat round tips. These pins are held against the pliers jaws with a soft stamped steel slug and held in place with an equally soft short Phillips head screw. OMG. I'm sticking with my Snappys... 😊

The new crapsman set i have wont fit into a reasonable size c clip. It appears snap on discontinued the internal/external set i have. I destroyed my spine so wont be working on anything big enough to need snap ring pliers so ive been trying to sell them with zero luck.

Most people don’t realize that if you know the diameter of the hole in the snap ring and I’m talking where the snapping plier goes, you virtually know everything about that snapping besides being internal or external. The KD Brand were identical years ago to the Snapon. All made by the same manufacturer in the same blow mold case with a different name on it. Oh yeah, much different price.

I always give Harbor Freight a look because a bunch of their better/best stuff isn't even made in China. And even then their floor jack selection is some of the best (Badland offroad jack- Amazing, Daytona Super Duty 3T + Aluminum 1.5/2T jacks- also amazing) and you aren't really getting anything by overpaying brands like NAPA or SnapOn to still get a Chinese made jack anyways.... But it also pays to be an informed consumer and not one who just wants to throw out terms that have little actual meaning to them anymore. Their closest equivalent Icon snap ring plier set are probably the same USA OEM as these Langs anyways. They're the cheapeast place to get the Mayhew USA equivalent 58" pry bar ($100 regular price, $75-$80 on sale) But if you think throwing $250 at Matco or Mac magically gets you a better product that totally isn't also a rebrand of the same exact thing, then whatever, some people are deluded that way they'll let certain brands pull the wool over their eyes. Either way, on a sale they're close enough in price (all of $4-$15 more, oh boy) and have a better warranty, or at least an actual statement of warranty.... Which Lang doesn't seem to advertise on this sort of tool- neither on Amazon or on their own website. Just like I said. It pays to be informed.

I really like their coolant hose pinch off vice grips. It takes some getting used to finding the sweet spot how hard to tighten. I’ve had a set of them pinched over the weekend waiting on a part and they didn’t leak a drop of coolant.

After a recent hub bearing replacement on a friends car I lament that I need a better selection of snap ring pliers. I broke one set and got pissed and attacked the ring with a chisel and mini sledge.
