I worked at the Sleeping Beauty mine for 6 years in the 70s for Leonard Hardy. And also Pinto Valley (Castle Dome). Loved every minute of it! I was a cat skinner / haul truck operator and a picker. I had the privilege of finding a 64 pound super high grade mostly spiderweb nugget at Pinto Valley in what we called the C pit. Mr. Hardy made a trip out to the mine to actually see the area where the nugget came from and we met him and talked with him about getting more of it. He made a promise to the guys on our 3 crews that whoever would pull another 50 pounds of the same stuff he would give a 14k gold and turquoise watch cuff like the one he was wearing that day. (Someone was brave enough to ask him what it was worth and he said it cost him $5400.00 including the watch to have made.). Of course that spurred us to being all assholes and elbows over the next week or so trying to mine more of it. I was able to find and pull two more 5 gallon buckets out and another young man picked another bucket. Hardy was like a big kid when he saw it was such a high grade that it needed no stabilization. Each bucket weighed around 55 pounds. I worked the Pinto Valley mine another year or so before they moved the operation to Sleeping Beauty. Never saw much more of the spider web come out of PV much less of that quality. I have the watch cuff. That is a story in itself. ;0)

They pressurize the turquoise in a copper solution, it makes it less porous and also makes the color more intense. Samples that have Zachariah stabilization have more calcium than natural turquoise

12:25 Thats true that the word Turquoise comes from Turkey but Turkey has no turquoise mine (also Iraq doesn't have turquoise mine). The name comes because the Turkish traders were bringing the Persian turquoise from Iran to Europe during the middle ages. I am very surprised Jeff didnt know this even though he is the godfather of turquoise in the US.

I know there’s so many different kinds of turquoise variation that even pros forget the lore sometime Where if someone specialized in one particular mine maybe they would be able to remember more easily either way this dude is surrounded by hundreds of different Types I don’t blame him for not remembering he does a good job at what he does I absolutely love Persian and Iranian Turquoise some of my favorite in the whole world

When I first walked up to the skies to check out what they had they were talking about you and how excited they were they film them he totally broke the ice and might’ve been the reason why they even agreed to chat with me I’ve been buying cutting Turquoise for over a decade and I bought what I believe or dyed howlite or magnesite Beads from the 22nd St. show 😭😭😭😭

that's awesome!! they're some cool old timers and def deserve the exposure!! LOL damn dude. I might've bought them from the same vendor.. they weren't marked as "Howlite dyed turquoise" It just straight up said turquoise.. i wasn't suspicious of anything until after watching your video, then realized its 100% dyed howlite. fml

I have some but it’s the highest grade of quality and I don’t want to cut it to sell it. I want to cut it to put into jewelry although I have a friend that sells it for $300 a pound in the average quality. I will probably get some in the future and start cutting that to sell.

Please get one of these fluffy things for the microphone, that would improve the sound quality a lot outside.

I have wondered why no turquoise was associated with the copper mining in Michigan.
@lapidarydave3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure Jeff best would say that it’s there somewhere maybe if you find it you can be the first to name it if it has a good name and it’s catchy you could easily create a market for it and when you’re a millionaire you can hire me I need a job LOL
@odalaigh3 жыл бұрын
@@lapidarydave ha, aka yooperlite. There is lots of chrysocolla in the area but no turquoise. Obviously something to do with how the copper formation was created. I just don’t know what. Probably a research paper out there on the topic..
