Korone really popularized it in the community. she had some streams teaching words iirc, and she’d say hey guys to get us kaigainiki’s attention.

I think it's all three of these explanations. It was a meme before Korone used it (I learned this from a clip of Matsuri, of course, laughing while trying to imitate the ad it's from), but when Korone started using it the phrase became a Summoning Spell for Kaigainiki and every member she has demonstrated it to has been surprised at how effective it is. Now not every member has seen the Summoning Spell or would be familiar with a yabe website meme, but the phrase "Hey, guys!" is also an extremely common phrase for American English and is present in a LOT of media that Japanese people would consume. It would also likely be present in English learning material, as well.
