Yeah it seemed like a wasted opportunity. It's smacks of corporate interference where they went for a 'safe' option, instead of something more classically FF. Attempting to go for photo realism definitely a mistake and not super duper worth the render power to render all those hair strands, which took up a majority of the power apparently.

I JUST suddenly remembered this song and movie existed. I don't know how I forgot it totally for years. I used to go to sleep as a kid listening to the song, and the movie made me so emotional. I don't know why most people hated it at the time... Gosh I want to re-watch it as an adult. It moved me so much, I'd like to see what it can do for me as an artist. I'm shocked that I can still effortlessly remember all the lyrics after completely forgetting it all this time.

Same reason why people hated Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire back then, another similar animated film that bombed. It basically had a capitalist/imperialist villain who wanted to ransack Atlantis for fame and money. While the film wanted to show that the imperialist colonisers were bad, while most of said villain’s former allies (who joined to learn the lost culture of Atlantis, or were in for the money but had moral standards) turn against him and fight alongside the Atlanteans. If you loved The Spirits Within, you may also love Atlantis and Treasure Planet. Also, now that I think about it, the plot of James Cameron’s Avatar is very similar to Atlantis. In fact, it feels more like Atlantis than Pocahontas.

I never disliked this film. When I first saw it I was blown away by it. Back then aside from a few magazines there wasn't the internet to just homogonise reactions. I mean when I got Final Fantasy 8, I thought it would be more of 7, and then I got used to a whole new game. So this film dropped and was just really fascinating for me, and I never had anyone shitting on it. So it was weird to me that it was so badly received later. You can't deny at the very least it was ambitious.

Conceptually it is extremely advanced and beautiful. It is jam packed with deep physics, spirituality and a profound understanding of causal/quantum effects well beyond classical thinking. By now, I should never be shocked by Lara, but once again.....ZZZZZZZZZap! I have never heard this until today. I had to go back and listen to the ACTUAL video to verify what I heard. At 3:20 of the Actual Video she belts a wall of sound on "Suspended Within" (doing what Lara does, NOT singing the consonant "in" but a Wide Open Mouth 6 second E5 "ahhhhh" with re-attack D5 to B4) and then leaps right back up at 3:29 with what I can only describe as a pure tone D5-E5-F5-D5 "animal cry riff" (what the hell was that! Merde!, that was Dimash-like, I see where the inspiration came from). That's just showing off, "straight to jail, no-one should be that good".

My favorite Lara Fabian song is in english ! THE DREAM WITHIN Absolutely fantastic song for a marvel of a film. I had to admit that back in the day Lara Fabian was made fun of in France by comedians ("she's too loud, lulz !") , and being in my late twenties I had fallen for that "uncool" B S. So when the film Final Fantasy ended I was enthralled by the closing credits song - only to be shocked when I realized in the credits who was singing. I learned a lesson there, about following the hivemind mindset.

Such an under-rated movie. Granted, as FF's first foray into the big-screen, it would have done well to take a note from comic book to movie translations and been more true to the source material. A film with Chocobos, Mogs, magic, and some noteworthy and memorable mobs (Malboro, Tonberry, etc) might have sounded silly in a pitch, but probably would have done very well. On the other hand, if this had been just any other film not from Square and not bearing the FF title, I mean if you just take it for what it is, it's a fantastic movie. The core concepts of sci-fi and Gaia and trying to balance the duality of science and spirituality is true to the FF core, but beyond that plot substrate it really stands apart from FF and stands on its own. Again I would have loved an FF movie that was more true to the franchise, but I also love FF:The Spirits Within for what it is, and I think it was a seriously under-rated film. Oh, and obviously... I'm here in 2023 listening to this incredibly powerful song for a reason. Amazing soundtrack.

I would love it if Sony and Square made another Final Fantasy animated movie. (Sony also made this movie) But instead of the hyperrealistic motion capture animation, do it in a Spider-Verse style 2D/3D hybrid inspired by Yoshitaka Amano's artwork. The adaptation should be a fantasy sci-fi with particular inspiration from the first six games in terms of story elements.
