What meals can I pull together this week for my family of 9 when we've already spent the entire grocery budget for the month? Since there's no money left to buy groceries, I can only use what's in my pantry and stockpile. In addition, some of our meals need to be low-carb/diabetic-friendly to help keep my blood sugar in check. Check out this video to see what I came up with! (Hint: The sale items from previous weeks sure do come in handy!)

I live in Europe and stretching the budget has become a reality here as well. I‘ll make vegetable or potato soup, lentil or split pea soup, stews with cabbage, spaghetti with tomato sauce, omelettes. There are so many options. As long as you can cook, you can stretch the budget. Shop for sales whenever you can. Problem with a lot of younger people is that they can’t cook and rely on takeout or industrial produced foods. They overpay for crappy foods.

Same here in the U.S.A. so many people just have no clue how to cook cheaply. Most younger people dine out or get take home or like you said they purchase processed meals at super market and it's so unhealthy as well as expensive. This younger generation need to start learning to cook and budget

@@judyjenna-pilot553 We have a saying in Hungarian I could translate to "Urge is high lord" It means If you are in need you gonna do what you have to do. So if the younger generation can't pay for take out or McDonald's they will have to learn how to cook.

Sarah and the other kids who cook need a channel showing how they make their recipes, showing how to sew, how they build things, fix things, etc. So many kids have never had the opportunity to learn since electronics have taken over and parents are so busy anymore. Learning from another kid makes those watching get interested and those new tasks appear more doable when learning from a peer.

I know you are working hard to stretch your food dollar as most of us ARE. I saw the pot of chicken on the stove and first thing that popped in my head was chicken and dumplings. Growing up we only got them twice a year,Thanksgiving and Christmas. When I went out on my own, I started making it myself. It's not for just holidays anymore. In fact, my mom asked me how I made mine and asked me to make it for her. As it turns out, she liked mine better!!!

Me too!! My mom could stretch a dollar and still feed us well. She was such a tremendous cook. I still would take her cooking and baking over the finest restaurant. I don’t know how she did it!! I try to emulate her frugality and style. No one would ever feel deprived on the limited resources she worked with. I brought my kids up with this mindset and am happy to say that they show some appreciation for that type of cooking/ love. Love your channel ♥️

Love the idea of putting all the leftovers out on the counter like a buffet. On a side note, I'm always amazed by all the things kids can do to help. I see videos from homeschoolers/homesteaders/farmers and the kids are learning as they go from the time they're little. And the adults don't seem to think twice about including and teaching them.

I'd like to comment on your chicken soup. My first attempt is still laughed at 30 yrs later. As a poor student, I boiled several pieces of chicken, to make a LARGE pot of soup. Removed the chicken, cooled it and chopped into small pieces. Prepared veggies and went to return everything to the pot and was shocked at how "unclean" the water looked. So, I poured it out, scrubbed the pot with an SOS pad & filled it with "nice clean" water. Added veggies, chicken & spices and boiled it. Served up a big bowl and found it had NO taste!! When I asked people for advice on how I'd made it, everyone laughed. Apparently, I'd made "nice CLEAN soup!" It was tasteless, but, boy was it "CLEAN!!"

My dear mother, who is now deceased (she lived until age 94), used to make the most delicious soup I've ever tasted. She used to keep a "soup jar" in the fridge that she'd put the week's leftover veggies in, if she had an insufficient amount left from the week's meals. Then, she'd boil a soup bone, or the carcass of a chicken and dump the contents of her soup jar in. Her soup was F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!! When I asked her "What's your secret?", she told me: "Don't ever add anything to your soup that doesn't contribute to its flavor". I've followed her instructions to this day and have my own soup jar in my fridge. Even though I am a guy, I think I'm a pretty decent cook and this has enabled me to have "Mom's cooking" to this day.

I was raised by my grandmother for many years and she would make a meal every few days of the leftovers that couldn't be directly mixed with anything else. She'd add fresh sliced tomatoes or sonething. I used to love those meals!

Hello from a very hot and dry Norfolk, UK. Loved this video, you have inspired me to push a little harder this year and put up a lot more dehydrated food. The aubergine lasagne looked so good. Thanks for sharing :)

Wonderful conversations and cooperation really help your home go smoothly. I am the 5th child, 3rd daughter of seven children. We didn't have a garden, no animals to provide food, and my daddy worked two jobs. Church was for show. It is very important to put God first, read, and let everyone have family time . Others don't know your children as you do. I am so happy seeing you all. I don't think there is a family photo of us at the table. Mary 76 Carolyn 75 F.D. Jr. 73 Howard 72 Mae 71 John 69 Carmen 68 Years ago, my neighbor said, you know when you are old when your children are on social security. Our children are under fifty.
