Michelle Yeoh absolutely stole the movie as Santa, despite only being a supporting role. I loved her relationship with Kate, since it's clear that she cares about her deep down, and wants her to get better. In a refreshing twist, runs a Christmas shop because she loves the holiday, not being a bitter boss who hates her job.

I went to watch this film "ironically", then ended up sincerely falling in love with it. It actually inverts as many tropes as it adheres to: Kate DOESN'T get the big part or win the big audition. She decides that chasing that kind of success is actually not what she wants. And I love the Eastern-European-immigrant family, as this reflected the kind of Christmases (and dramas) I have with my family. And I cry every time Kate and Tom open up about "I was meant to be special/being normal is hard enough," because damn, it gets me right in my bones.

you're right! Although Last Christmas does follow some romcom tropes, it really goes against the grain in a lot of ways. I definitely gotta teary eyed out of nowhere multiple times toward the end of this movie

One message that stood out to me is you don't have to be special. I love that she finds joy in just helping out others in however small way and repaying those that have helped her and trying to accept herself as she is, immigrant child, someone who has survived a major illness, needing a healthier lifestyle and someone who isn't a superstar. I really love the link to georges Michael, didn't know much about him until now but his songs were really nice.

What I love about this story is that it fools you into thinking it's the classic holiday rom-com where boy learns to love again after meeting MPDG who reminds her the meaning of life except gender-flipped. And it kind of IS, but it's about the girl loving herself and her family and her fellow humans. No big "I just needed a boyfriend for Christmas" moment, just... friendly, familial love for all around her. The boy isn't really playing a love interest but a guardian angel... with a bit of a selfish motivation, after all, he quite literally gave her his heart, he's just making sure she doesn't squander his gift.

I love how three months prior to the film's release, everyone and their mother had twigged the big reveal, which meant that Henry Golding had to lie a lot to keep it hidden. It still manages to tug on the heartstrings, and I still got teary eyed during the twist reveal.

I have to agree that Last Christmas has to be up there on the top five movie classics and must watch every year. When I saw the wrap-up of the film, I cried and my sister held me up and told me "Yep. I feel the same... I didn't see that coming" Each actor brought something unique to the character and I loved it! Another great movie that moved me to tears has been Belle 2021 by Studio Chizu. Honestly, I did not see that coming, throughout the movie, you feel immersed in that world and then when both worlds come crashing together and how the main protagonist becomes her own hero. Wow! Last Christmas and Belle should be watched by everyone. Warning: some topics in the Belle film is for a mature audience. Thank you QC!

We did guess the ending not very far into the movie, but that didn’t make it feel boring. Just because it’s predictable it doesn’t mean it can’t still be meaningful, entertaining and touching. That’s why, after watching Last Christmas, it just tore into me, when I watch that scene of her realizing that Tom have been like a sort of Guarding Angel of sort. Hence the reason why that she can only see him, and nobody else can. Which is like the last 30 minutes of the movie. But seeing that scene, just gets to me, since I do love it. Even though it is emotional to see it, I’m like “No!”

I really enjoyed this movie. The actors knocked the story out of the park. I felt for Kate because there are so many times that I feel like a mess or a burden to my loved ones even though they don’t mind helping me. Seeing her regain that hope is reassuring that I’ll make it too. ❤️🎄 I think Last Christmas is a romance - specifically a romance with the good in people. Edit - I also thought Santa could’ve been related to Tom too or at least knew him before he passed but I was surprised and pretty impressed they didn’t go there.

I'm a huge fan of this channel, and I have to say this is one of my favorite essays from you. This was a very nuanced take that showed thoughtful research and objectivity while still demonstrating how it made you feel. It got me a bit emotional, and I've yet to see the film! I had watched the musical finale with Emilia Clarke on the official KZbin channel (one of my fave actors singing one of my fave songs.) However I had stayed away from the movie itself. Because, like many, I hadn't heard many positive things. Plus as mentioned, movie trailers often love to give away too much of the plot and/or frame it in a way that makes it seem cheesy and lacking depth/nuance. As often happens, the trailer totally failed the movie it was trying to promote. Despite knowing the twist now, I am looking forward to seeing this. I'm there for the journey. Not to mention it's based on one of the things I feel most strongly about in life. How I hope people can feel less sorrow over the lack of idealized, unrealistic romantic love in their lives. And instead embrace the far more abundant and meaningful love that can exist between all humans when they open up to it. Family, friendship, community, etc. Something a lot of us need so much yet shy away from finding or sharing. Even when we know we need it. Thanks again so much!

I saw this movie in theaters with my mom, she was so excited saying to me: "Come on, let's go see the Queen of the Dragons" (I know she meant the Mother of Dragons, but that's how she baptized Daenerys). So I took her. And how can I say "no" to Emilia Clarke? She is a lovely person (and if I may say it, she looks really beautiful in this movie). I loved this movie. I am not to drawn to Christmas movies because, as it was stated in the video, most of them are... not necessarily bad, but meh and forgettable. This one is not. I do believe that critics were harsh on it because they were sure it was another bland season comedy, but up to this video, I didn't know of how many real life events are portrayed in it, and that makes the movie to me not only way more enjoyable but actually way more real and we can care more for the characters. At the end, it is an original written movie inspired by songs of George Michael (and his secret altruism), that Emilia Clarke delivers a real character that shares similitude with her own life-threatening experiences and makes it more personal and real and we can actually feel empathy for her at the end of the film. And the movie is actually taking on actual real life issues as racism, xenophobia and homophobia (which, why? Is the XXI Century people, not the XV, come on!) but actually does them in such and naturalistic and organic way that doesn't feel too "in your face" to actually care about them. In all it is a really enjoyable movie with many layers on it that many people and critics in plain cynicism just disregarded it as another "rom-com holiday season movie" when in actuality is a beautiful take on modern-day issues with a story of real personal drama. It was probably framed in purpose as another "rom-com holiday season movie" in order to draw people that know that formula all to well, and probably that is still it's main detractor now, but to those who actually saw it can tell, it is no "rom-com holiday season movie".

I am definitely that tool whose go to holiday movie will forever by Die Hard. But I think I'll have to check this one out, because it looks right up my alley. There are aspects of it that remind me of a Chinese movie I found like 20 years ago when I was pirating Kung Fu movies, before they were easy to buy or stream. It's called My Left Eye Sees Ghosts, and while it's not a holiday movie, I think anyone who likes Last Christmas, might also enjoy it :)

I think The Christmas Chronicles fits the bill to be a modern day classic as well. Kurt Russle is an awesome santa

I was not thrilled to watch this it being a chick flick. about half way through i really started to enjoy it and understood the message. Now when I hear that song i always think of this movie and watch it every year like the other good Christmas movies

This movie is a combination of a very serious story (Kate very nearly died, and now has to live with the world's worst case of survivor guilt and is obviously depressed), silly comedy (Why did Emma Thompson have to appear in the movie? We know who she is. Making Kate's family be kooky ethnic types isn't helping. Just play it straight!), and rom-com with a twist (The surprise reveal completely derails the movie IMO. Why not just have Tom be a real person who cares for her and gives her the support to get her life together? The "ghost" angle makes the movie swerve into another sort of genre, just to have a surprise ending, and it's not needed. Why did Emma Thompson write it this way? She knows better!). You don't need a handsome ghost. You don't need kooky comedy. Just stick to this story of a woman struggling (at Christmastime, no less, when you're supposed to be happy), and she meets a nice man (and sure, she learns to think about others worse off than she is and not be such a trash fire generally). That's all. I get that Emma is a huge fan of George Michael and that's great, but this screenplay is not helping to express that. There is a lot of good stuff here (appealing actors, good performances, establish that Kate is burning goodwill, struggling to hang on to a job and to find a place to live and to communicate with her family and to look after her physical and mental health). Just don't... try so hard.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account". That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do. It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER If you have any questions let me know xx
