The 80's song that Joel got in his radio back home (27:12) was not because Frank was dying. They address this perfectly, Joel says that the 80's song was on a weekly timer, if Bill was not around to reset the timer it will go on automatically, calling Joel & Tess to come and help Frank. I really love the attention payed to all this little and seemingly unimportant details.

Exactly my thaughts. And since the 80s were on for so long, I was aware of this threat from the beginning, that we might not meet in person with Bill, we might just get a memory, a flashback about him... I miss the opportunity of sarcastic parts with Ellie and Bill, but what was handed to me, gave a different, yet perfect experience. I was crying by these heavy emotions! These uninportant details hide a larger piece of easter egg every time, foreshadowing what is about to happen.

I loved so much how they didn't show us Bill's and Frank's dead bodies. They respectfully left those last precious moments to them, not even letting Joel enter. This whole episode felt so intimate and raw, but I really enjoyed how the viewer was kept at bay at the end. When you have played the games, you watch the TV show with some sense of superiority, because you expect to just know what will happen. You are used to breaking into every room, reading the most heartbreaking letters and looting everything you can, rummaging through peoples abandoned homes. Instead I felt very humble by the end of this episode, TLOU truly always is a roller coaster ride of emotions and it seems the TV show will not let us gamers off the hook

I honestly wasn't expecting to cry during this episode. I was ready for some badass parts where we went gun blazing to the infected school. But this was just so wholesome. Best line is Ellie reading Bill's letter and he included the "hehehehe". Very on brand for him.

I liked that Frank was able to say he had bad days with Bill. It made it more of a real relationship with depth rather than a one dimensional statement of “love is still out there”. Making it an effort leans more into the theme of the show

As someone with first-hand experience caring for someone with ALS, I believe Frank is supposed to be succumbing to ALS, MS, or a similar neurodegenerative disorder rather than cancer. I believe a neurodegenderative disease was chosen intentionally since the symptoms include twitching and ultimately losing control of your body like in cordyceps infection. His medications are likely a muscle relaxer to prevent twitching and cramps in failing muscles, a mucus thinner to make swallowing easier, and some kind of antidepressant/antianxiety/mild sedative.

I feel like this show has even more and it's just at the beginning of its run. this episode was amazing! the depiction of a gay couple alone was top notch because it was written as humanly as possible and not gay-pointed. I loved the simple scenes that showed the beauty of their little capsulized world and how contrasting that is with everything else around them. And how in the end and with the note it was a clear parallel of what Joel is going to be to Ellie. Joel is much like Bill and Ellie is like Frank, they can only help each other from here.

There's this 'random' camera cut when Joel was knocking on Bill's bedroom door and suddenly the front door closes. Other's theorize that Bill was still alive and snuck out somehow; but i think it could be a metaphor for how Bill's letter to Joel (which Ellie reads shortly after) locks Joel in and forces him to confront his grief about Tess' death and come to terms with his new role as Ellie's protector.

I loved this episode. I wondered if Bill took care of his mother until her death, and was fully prepared to to the same for Frank. Bill built a bunker, and left the rest of the house the same. Frank brings life back to Bill, and as his health fails he doesn't want Bill to suffer in the years they have left. It's about quality of life, and living rather than mere survival.

Not to mention this episode showed that Bill's letter was the final catalyst that makes Joel decide that Ellie is his real mission. Up until then, the only thing Joel talked about was getting to Tommy and now he literally says that Tommy may know where to find the firefly doctors to get Ellie to. If we don't meet Bill and go through his relationship with Frank in the detail that we did; it wouldn't be believable that Joel would really take Bill's words to heart.

I was expecting Frank to die on that raid bc we don't see him on the game, it was just a much hardened Bill who is closed off and warned Joel about the implications of caring. But I love this ending, honestly they won the apocalypse. They found love, own a town, have water and electricity and farm, have traps to keep intruders off, and it lasted 20 years

The 80s song was playing in the bunker because it was an automated warning. Joel says that Bill put it on a timer so that if Bill never resets it every couple of weeks at a certain time, then it basically lets out a distress signal for Joel and Tess to come and help. Bill probably did this in the event that he dies before Frank and the distress call would call Joel and Tess to help save Frank. It plays on a loop and broadcasts onto Joel’s radio. We hear it at the end of the first episode which I guess signals that Frank and Bill’s death was super recent. At least on week ago.

This was a good episode. I wanted to cry. It was one of the best episodes of a series I've seen this year so far. It was sweet and beautifully done. Everything from their relationship to the daily routine and preparation after the world fell into chaos was so well done. I love Nick Offerman as an actor and his dramatic acting is amazing.

Missed some things, the Last of Us podcast mentioned that Frank had something similar to MS, not cancer. Bill had the machine on loop for 80's so Joel would come get their things. The window shot at the end is the menu screen from the first game.

Enjoyed this episode and your thoughts! Super-minor correction - the music playing in the bunker is due to Bill being dead and not resetting a timer every few weeks. Joel explains it in a quick line. It also suggests they died not all that long ago bc the 80s music just started at the end of episode 1. I like that they tied up that thread. Also, that timeframe is consistent with the rotten food, dying flowers, etc.

Amazing episode. I have 0 complaints. Totally nailed the "being human" side of this story/world. It's all about that. Who cares it's not exactly like the game... I'm sure they'll make up for it in other ways (personally I think they already did, a lot of nice game references in this). It's a great adaptation! Such a beautiful story.

Ryan is amazing at breaking down the subtext in each of the choices made in these shows and the choices the actors make in their roles. There is always the debate “does it really go that deep?” But I know there are some of the creatives on this show who probably did have these hidden subtexts and are probably so happy when someone else notices. I like how they weren't real specific with Frank's illness, but if I had to guess, it probably wasn't cancer. It looked like something that was more degenerative, like ALS. He mentioned that even before the apocalypse, they didn't have a cure for what he had, which would fit ALS too.

The thing i liked most about Bill and Frank's story is that it had such a happy ending. They were together and went out on their own terms, after having lived fulfilling and happy lives together. In a world with some pretty unhappy endings, i just feel like they did Bill and Frank justice on this one.

Speaking of themes, just looking at how food is used. I'll stick to the *beginning* of the episodes:(because it's obviously recurring in the 3rd ep) - ep1 Joel cooks breakfast for him and his daughter, pre-apocalypse. - ep2 Joel, Tess and Ellie all eat together. Joel and Tess are eating the same type of food, though they each have their own. Ellie has a delicious-looking sandwich someone else made *for her.* - ep3 Joel does share his food with Ellie, but he tosses it at her and they don't eat together. - ep3 Bill cooks for Frank. So yeah, food as an expression of love and caring for another.(as reiterated by Bill's note) It demonstrates the bond. The fact that industrialized food is what killed everyone certainly has implications in terms of this theme, but I'll leave it there.

Two things I wanted to point out: 1) probably not cancer but schlerosis (i dont know to spell this) like stephen hawking, you get this by his movement impairement and he saying that humanity didnt have a cure/treatment for it before the outbreak anyway. 2) the 80s song rolling at the ending of the episode, which may be the same from ep1 is in fact explained by Joel. The playlist was programmed to play automatically in case of Bill's absence.

I love that I get to see the same story told 2 different ways. For me, it's perfect that the show is a little different to the game, while keeping the familiar theme. This episode had me in tears, mostly I think, because I'm 56 and still single and wondering if I'll find love before my time here comes to an end, and it hammers it home, makes the loneliness that bit sharper for a time. Looking forward to watching more.

The last half of the show hit pretty heavy; having taken care of someone that couldn’t stand or move on their own, needing to be moved, i found comfort in the level of love displayed and how tender it was. It added an extra element because it’s easy to say I would do that for someone I love until you’re actually having to do it.. Bill never looked bothered by it. They both looked liked they’d accepted that this was their lives but they wouldn’t change it. This was a deep episode. 🙏🙏👍👍👍

Frank didn't have cancer, he had some neuro-degenerative disease. MS, I think, which had progressed to severity -- Frank seemed to know what it was, which would make sense if he were diagnosed many years ago. They make a point of showing Frank's deteriorating motor coordination, when he's trying to paint and it's not going as well as it used to.
