Can you help me understand something? I know some Indians here, in America, who wear flip flops and sandals with bare feet even during the winter, and with suit and tie, and even while pushing a lawnmower (dangerous because could easily slip or get feet cut). My question is, why do some Indians prefer wearing sandals no matter what the occasion or the weather? I wear sandals when it’s hot out, or when I’m just running to the store, but not in the freezing winter time, or if I am wearing a suit. I do have a neighbor who is Indian and I am not exaggerating, but I have never seen him wear anything but flip flops, ever. Is there a cultural reason for this? I asked an Indian friend once who tried to explain that it had might have something to do with removing shoes when entering homes to keep dirt out of the house, but he wasn’t sure. Most Indians I do encounter around here are wearing open toe shoes most of the time and I am just genuinely curious if there is a cultural or historical reason for it? Sorry I am not trying to be insensitive in any way whatsoever by asking this. Edit: The response I am receiving to this mostly seems due to a slight misunderstanding of what I’m specifically asking. People wear shoes when going to the office/workplace. Younger people wear shoes for the gym, college and whenever they go out with friends. For Indians, shoes are simply not the default footwear. So unless there is a specific reason to wear shoes, people would just put on their sandals. You also asked about the feet getting dirty in sandals. Well, most people wash their feet after entering their home. Lastly, these things of course have some exceptions. For ex. me and my family wear flip flops inside the house. When going outside for chores like grocery shopping we wear sandals. My dad wears shoes when he's at work.

Bro, the most shocking fact I learned about your elections is that you guys don't even get a public holiday on voting day. We Indians get a leave on voting day, and I personally got 2 days leave for elections as my office is in a different district from my home, so I had leave on both the day I voted, and the day most of my colleagues voted. I'll admit I was lucky to swing 2 leaves as I have a good understanding with my boss, but 1 of the days would have been mandatorily off for me.

Also, there are polls at many public places like train stations, bus stops, town halls, churches, etc, so you will definitely pass one naturally during your daily occupations. Then again we also have this thing called a 40 hour work week so people have time to do other things on a work day. Maybe you should work on that in the States.

This leaves many people to be confused and think it is secular, but in fact it is founded by a litany of believers in different things who were tired of being told they couldnt believe as they wished or had to take a back seat in society simply because of a national religion. The US is not a secular entity, rather intended to be one of religious freedom. Also, "In God we trust" is a stamp on US dollars, not their motto in any way. "In God we believe" exists only in your mind. As the religious freedom in the US extends to the religions of atheism and agnosticism. What rock are you living under you think nobody is talking about right wing leaders in any country, state or union? Left and Right are all either side can talk about. Obama, who was both muslim and not white. (A mistake, but an occurrence nonetheless. Heck, some of the founding fathers of the USA worshipped trees. They came from many religions. John's episode is aimed at non Indians, so he should not assume that his viewers already know about India's recent achievements. He should've covered both sides instead of just criticizing the govt.
