This is reminding me of a programme in the UK in the 1990s called ‘Ghostwatch’. It portrayed a ‘live’ show of a haunting at a house, where a team went to investigate and all hell broke loose. Though it was made to entertain for Halloween, it caused some controversy, as some folk actually believed it. Ryan Hollinger on KZbin summarises this well if you want to know more about it.

I saw this last night, and I don't think that the black and white scenes were meant to be viewed as part of the found-footage. (SPOILERS) None of what was happening in Jack's head, all leading up to him believing he was stabbing his wife, only to realize he was stabbing Lily, was part of the found-footage aspect of the movie. It's easy to believe that the scenes happening during commercial break weren't either. They were all having conversations that they definitely wouldn't be having if they knew they were being filmed. Jack was the host and would have known where all of the cameras were.

This might be one of the least scary horror movies I've seen, but it's also one of the most entertaining. No fight/flight response triggered, just a slowly increasing sense of dread. It lingers for a while after you watch it. Instant classic.
@erniewyles88326 ай бұрын
I hear ya. Personally, I think 'scary' is very subjective. Some folks go for jump scares and define that as scary. I personally think jump scares are the cheapest form of scare tactic. I want to feel creeped out, held in high suspense of impending doom, and want a good payoff. If a movie delivers that, I feel it succeeded in being good horror. This movie did that, it kept me intrigued, and is still good upon second watch. The points you mentioned are exactly why I would classify this movie as a good horror movie. Gore works, if it's needed to emphasize a different shock in a scene. By itself, it's not meant to initiate dread, but shock alone. That isn't scary, that's shocking for the sake of being shocking. I believe Late Night With the Devil will be a classic and is a great watch on a dark and spooky night. It's a great Halloween season movie for sure and an instant classic for that time of the year.

@erniewyles88326 ай бұрын
Right. Those are simply expository scenes for the viewer of the movie. The behind the scenes stuff mainly centers around the beginning background information that leads into the initial taping of the Night Owls Halloween Special. I do, however, feel the B&W parts could have been part of the behind the scenes stuff if they would have made these scenes work as though filmed by backstage surveillance cameras. This could easily have been done, provided closed captioning is put in to better make out what is being said (because the recordings would have been poor quality, along with the minimal quality sound). Done like this, the B&W scenes would have totally worked. That said, as it was presented works, and I was enthralled during these scenes as I knew they would be short (commercial breaks) and would provide context for what would be seen next.

that's the best way to view a movie. Look at original movie trailers from the 80's. They gave simple premise, and nothing more. You wanted to know more...then go watch the movie in a theater. Full trailers then were equivalent to teaser trailers now. Nowadays, full trailers give all the points of the movie and leave with only the last 15 - 30 minutes to know what will happen. It's sad, actually. So this movie catching people off guard is a breath of fresh air. I'm hopeful other movies come out like that. The First Omen is another movie that had minimal exposure prior to release, and it is quite good as well.

I cannot in good concious say What made this a fun watch for me is the entire 70s late night Show motif they nailed everything about it. Brilliant idea and to make it a found footage movie makes it better Is the B&W scenes part of found footage? Cause they are full 16:9 wide and the opening narration Ironside says what we are watching are the unedited raw tape
@erniewyles88326 ай бұрын
no, the 16:9 scenes are either expository or hallucinogenic. The found footage is anything that is letterboxed.

I do agree that the black and white scenes do hinder the found footage angle, but at the same time i do think the serve the story immensely. I just think they could have took some inspired elements from even modern depictions of analog horror args in the cinematography, like make it look more natural in the way these bits of information are recorded, like from a distance and the audio is picking up conversation from afar, or they could have hidden just a little more of the behind the scenes if they really wanted to commit to the found footage angle.

Great review guys. I loved this movie and just been looking up reviews for it since I've seen it and it's nothing but great things!

The ai art is not even noticable. I was too busy paying attention to other stuff to even care about it. Don't let that stop trust me. It is definitely worth a watch and a re-watch.

Korey’s right on the money, these types of movies absolutely belong to the Alamo and Nitehawk theaters. Bring it back for Halloween!
@MrScharonne19966 ай бұрын
I kinda agree. The behind the scenes black and white should've been shot in the same aspect ratio and been even more grainy yet still in black and white.
@erniewyles88326 ай бұрын
I say it should have been presented as grainy security camera footage from security cameras strewn throughout the back stage area.

The mistake folks keep making is calling this "found footage". It's analog horror, and if you're not familiar with what that is, you need to spend some time on KZbin to figure it out. It's a great genre, and I am really enjoying watching it start to get into movies on a larger scale.

When you said Tales from the Darkside, I was sold. My dad watched that when I was a kid and it scared me. Hated the music. So this is a movie I will be seeing today.

Problem with AI art is that it screws over artists. But I think if we're not going to get legislation regulating it then artists and graphic designers will need to figure out a way to use it as a tool rather than fight it, tbh.

Yeah it’s not about it being noticable or not. This is turning into the elitist cgi vs pratical debate where they cry about not perfect cgi while not noticing things like cgi to turn grass green in films. When you’re not looking for it it’s not a problem. Reminds me of people crying that chainsawman should be all 2d and not understanding that shots they though were cgi where 2d sometimes so why bother wasting time drawing a chain moving every frame. People just complain. 😂like I am 😢😅

For the life of me, I couldn't place where i had seen that guy Carmichael even though his voice sounded so familiar. Looked up and it's that guy Bane from Matrix Reloaded/Revelations. The way he says Mr Anderson 😅

I saw the movie a few hours ago. It's not too long, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't feel like there was any time wasted or anything, so i really appreciate that. Definitely a fun fun watch.

I really enjoyed this movie. Only criticism I have is the exposition to start the movie was kind of unnecessary. Probably due to budget but they should’ve let that information be revealed through story telling instead of exposition. I feel like the whole “nice to see you again Jack” part about bohemian grove would’ve hit harder

Was supposed to see a year ago at Overlook Film Festival but I had to refund my ticket because the theater was overbooked with pass holders and ticket holders had to bounce 😂 I was so mad. Waited a whole damn year for this and really...it was just okay. Started off great but devolved into a confusing mess.

Yeah people in comments and Korey were way harder on films that got higher than 7/10 on IMDb. Maybe the concept and shortness was it for them. Could have been done faster in a short 30. People say it had perfect pacing but it was slow. Guess that is good though for the type of film. I recall a similar film that did the idea in less time about a dude who is on a game show and given millions of the wife roulettes and she clicks 4 times or something sad that her husband and audience doesn’t care. Way more horrifying imo as it’s pshycological maybe I just predicted things too fast and was waiting for the mind blowing stuff people saw. Still 6-7/10.

It literally states that the episode was planned to be a big comeback and that what you see is the master tape AND behind the scenes footage from the team. It wasn't an oversight.

Theres a UK anthology Series called Inside No.9, and this movie felt like a long episode of that, but not a good one...(there is a pretty good episode called 3x3 which is quite similar in theme)... The movie had a fantastic premise, period design and pastiche of the 70s chat shows, and the lead actor did a very good job, but it was neither funny nor creepy nor scary enough... Feels like a waste of a great idea
@PaulChristianJenkinsJD6 ай бұрын
The movie's budget is limited. There aren't a lot of familiar faces among the actors. However, it definitely holds your interest. I think the best analogy would be an hour-long version of 'The Night Gallery' from the 1970's.

This is why found forage horror movies are the best. They take a horror trope played out and turn it into something with a new feel and ambition.
