This was the mid- to late-80s. Audiences back then didn't know things like "make this song your own" and such. Back then, you pretty much had to sound exactly like the original. It was also right in the midst of Michael's peak and it was considered almost a disservice if you "tainted" his music by not copying him. We know now - and appreciate - when an artist takes a song and reproduces it to his/her own interpretation. As a people, we're also a bit more understanding in that we don't boo our children; we promote them to do great things. And Lauryn did just that.

I just tried to tackle this song at a singing lesson... This is one hard song! You can hear she has talent though she's just a beginner here. Lovely to see such a massive talent in her early stages.
