The reason for those bunches of police/service vehicles is technical: the game has a limit of 16.000 active vehicles. Once that limit is reached, it won't spawn new vehicles. When you fix a big traffic problem, you create some breathing room for the game and it'll resume spawning vehicles. Emergency services and service vehicles get priority over everything else, hence the burst of police cars and garbage trucks. :)

@@edwardmiessner6502 The roundabouts in N America are really, really small--little bigger than just a 4-way intersection would be--the posted speed limit in them is usually 15 mph. Works fine for a 1-lane roundabout or if the main road has 2 lanes and the cross street only has 1 lane, but if both have 2 lanes, there's a lot of exiting the roundabout from the inside lane, which confuses people on the outside who might be continuing around to the next road. Basically, there's a lot of weaving--actually, it's not even weaving, it's just points of conflicting directions.

Biffa I have a fun concept for a city you should build. The whole city is inside a huge roundabout with more roundabouts everywhere of varying sizes and some having stuff inside them if they are big enough, The idea is that the city will just be roundabout chaos but with perfect traffic flow since roundabouts are heaven.

At that first squareabout the main issue there was where the cars could go, the quickest way into the city was through the cargo terminal, so most cars went through there, after you put in that squareabout that was still the case.

You should do a series where you and 5 patrons share a save. You'll play for one hour to start, then give the save to someone for an hour, then back to you, and so on until the 5 patrons have each done one hour (10-11hrs to build the city). Think it would be cool to see that play out. You'll intend for the city to go one direction and they'll come in with new plans. Doing it across some of the various maps would be interesting.

I think one thing you could do more of is footpaths. Something like at 23:26 is just begging for a footpath from the stadium to the metro station, and then across the main road on the right to one of the smaller roads on the other side. And there were a couple of roundabouts that would have flowed much better without people on them.

The problem so many people appear to have with traffic in their CS cities is: Problem #1) Not planning and or understanding the hiarchy system of roadways. The road with you choose affects traffic volume capacity. Picking a cheap narrow road seems to save money at first, but if that road is intersecting the freeway at an interchange, it wont be able to handle the traffic later, and you wont have room to widen it later if you zone along it. Minimum road width to connect to a freeway needs to be the 4-lane road, which can be upgraded later without too much zoning or building disruption. But I recommend using the 6-lane road to connect to freeway interchanges. In future, a two parallel 6-lane two-way roads can be converted to two paired 6-lane one-way roads to increase capacity. A grid system works best for the major roads. On freeways, you dont need an overdone free flowing systems interchange with fly over ramps to service a 6-lane road. You dont need wide roads to run through communities to serve low density zoning. Problem #2) Lack of enough routes for vehicles to use. In real life, the sucessful road networks dont depend on one route to provide access to an area. Depending on population and destinations, more parallel routes need to be built. Problem #3) Too many intersections that are too close together. In real life, intersection spacing is key to traffic management. In the game, if you have a stop or signal controlled intersection within a few squares of a signal controlled intersection, it creates problems. To solve this, either cul-de-sac off the minor road and allow access into that community further away from the main intersection, or modify the traffic lane assignments to only allow the minor road to have a right in right out (RIRO) access control, no left turns. You see this on many modern planned roadways. The key is understanding and properly applying the engineering principles of Access Management. Learning about it can be found by anyone online. Problem #4) Not making the most effective use of mass transit.

biffa, a nice thing i like to do, mainly on industrial areas, i make a 1 way only system using 4 lane roads, then dictate no direction for the outer 2 lanes with the buildings on so they wont use it, unless they are dropping off to a building on that side. the flow improvement is amazing

For the “hockey pokey” lane switching, u can switch on dynamic lane switching and “enable highway split/merge rules” in TM:PE. This will mostly eliminate this issue. Then, when u add an extra lane after a slip lane for people to merge or an extra lane before an exit for people to split, the ai will automatically detect it.

I had the same thing when I used specific roads/pathways. I found a different road in another menu that worked better. I forgot where but it was somewhere in the menu where the trees also are. Very confusing.
