Lawbreakers in an oversaturated market

Gravity defying marketing with Cliff, unfortunate results for the dev team. In April 2018, Boss Key released a statement that the game failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep the game sustained. On June 11, the game was made free-to-play on Steam with a notice that the servers would be shut down on September 14, 2018. As of September 14, 2018, LawBreakers was removed from Steam and is no longer available for purchase.

It was insanely fun. Super unique combat with the Zero G zone, and had INSANE ceiling for movement tech etc. I actually have a couple clips of the kind of movement you could do in it saved. I think the shirt actually said "FUCK" but the stem of the 'F' was cut off, making it look like a little angular 'c". But the bigger crime here was the doughy thug life facial expression with the corgi on the Days Inn bed in the background. All he needed to complete the look was to aim sideways toward the camera an airsoft Glock and have an aromatherapy kit in the background. All the 90s game design heroes have become parodies of themselves: Cliffy B, Chris Roberts, Peter Molyneux, Tim Schafer, etc. Oh well, Unreal was a landmark and it's very impressive how long its engine has been relevant.

It feels weird looking back on this, since there's a lot of decent points that Cliffy B touched on that are legitimate complaints, but he just went about expressing them in a terrible way, or learned the exact wrong lesson from them. 1. AAA games were incredibly oversaturated in 2015 with old I.P's. 2. Leading with PC first *does* allow them to port onto consoles more easily if they do a lot of the legwork and establish a solid PC build first. 3. eSports was overhyped (and we're now currently living through its bubble bursting), and felt like it was crammed into every game. All of these are valid, and somehow he just communicated them in such a caustic way that nobody wanted to touch it.

It’s a shame the game died the way it did. When it went free to play, it actually started finding its niche audience. But by then it was already too late. Cliff was too stubborn sticking with the “$29.99 none of the” schtick. If he made the free to play decision sooner, it would’ve lived much longer. A hero shooter after overwatch, with MOBA elements after League, combining the worst of them both, that being the issue of League games being too long and too serious to be a fun game to jump on for a little bit, and the issue of overwatch being that so many characters means many aren't balanced. Add in that it advertised a campaign, but it was super short levels and always-online, and it's death by a thousand cuts. If I wanted to play a fun hero shooter, I'd play overwatch. If I wanted to play a MOBA, I'd play League. They're clashing genres, so they're not going to work well together. We learnt this with SMNC, I don't know why they ignored the signs and made a game like that anyway.

UT2K4 is dead as fuck. Still boot it up every couple months or so and search for games in the background/idle and see if anyone appears. You can find people playing Deathmatch, but not much else. Also Ross Scott, who runs Accursed Farms and Freeman's Mind has UT2K4 PuGs that get pretty big.

Lawbreakers had one simple problem that killed it before it reached critical mass: not easy to learn, hard to master but relatively hard to learn, brutally hard to master. They achieved what they wanted to do. If they had managed to stick around for a much longer time it could have been something.

unfortunately it had the bad timing of being released alongside giants like Overwatch, which were far more appealing towards a more general gaming audience by comparison. It didn't help Cliffy was just terrible at handling PR and marketing for the game, thinking being cool and edgy would suffice
