Its harder than you think. Some refuse to get help and anything you do to help just makes them more mad or lash out at you. You can take them to the hospital but they can only keep them a certain amount of time by law. Most places are voluntary and they can leave anytime. Sad to say but after a while there comes a point where there's nothing else you can do. Her family might have tried everything already and at that point it's not good for their own mental health to be around it everyday.

Try no to judge the family. Some parents have personality disorders that drive their families away over the years. The same things can happen during the early stages of dementia. I've walked in those shoes, and I was absolutely unable do do anything about my mother's behavior or living conditions. I can't tell you how often I cleaned out her hoarded house and later apartment only to have things return to usual within a week. She would tell friends, and later the apartment manager that she got no help from her family. I was ashamed of the way she lived, but I had no legal power over her. Her family may hay burned out on her.

Give the officer a break. She did not know anything about the woman apart from she was being a danger to herself and to others - including to the officers, would not comply with police instructions, in addition to trespassing on property where the owners wanted her removed. If she's been in the bathroom for 4 hours after being banned from the private business and threatening arson...No amounts of special needs makes this situation any different from a person hopped up on drugs. Cops do whatever they want. If you call 911 for any reason the cops show up. I woke up one day and saw my mom passed away in her sleep. I called 911 and told them and for some reason the police showed up a few minutes later. They walked in and said yeah she’s definitely dead then throw a sheet over and sat in front of the house in their cop car until the coroner came to take her body away. I felt like going outside and yelling at them and telling them to leave since there was no reason for the police to be there. The corner took about half an hour to get there and I was so stressed I went in the backyard and smoked a bowl to calm down. I didn’t care if the cops smelled it or not

For me, the moment I heard she had a lighter and means of starting fires, my mind shifted from ‘This is a helpless old lady.’ to ‘This is someone who, if gone unchecked, could harm herself and many others in that building.’, this situation needed to be handled this way, she was a threat. If it was just someone without possible arson intents, having locked themselves in a restroom, and wanted someone to talk to through the door, I would agree this was heartless and cruel. I’d rather one person get a little blood on their face rather than an entire building with people in it go up in flames. Regardless, someone clearly screwed up by letting this woman walk free. As a person working in British law enforcement i have to say that the cop's here likely prolonged this whole incident. Laughing and mocking and taunting and threatening to taze the lady? Completely unprofessional and they obviously know who they are likely dealing with. Trying to spray and set fire to them and burn the place down? Just justifying their actions. It’s high stress, they have a very high stress job and it’s not every day you see someone like for example, a pregnant woman overdosed in a bathtub. Situations like this like an angry air freshening are medium-stress but slightly funny, I’m going onto a run-on sentence now so I’m just gonna stop but you get the memo.

These cops clearly don’t know how to deal with dementia. This woman does not need to be tazed or arrested. She needs assisted guidance. The cops here don’t have a clue that you can’t explain anything to a person with dementia. The concept of arrest is lost on this poor woman. Had they made her think it was her own idea, she most likely would have come out. I’ve dealt with many elders with dementia and had the cops simply told her that her lunch was ready; she would’ve probably come out. Now she is injured and still doesn’t have a clue what’s going on. Cops get a big ZERO here.

@Shadow11 - Tell her that her lunch was ready. Tell her that you have her iced drink ready. Tell her she has a flower delivery. Tell her it's time to go to her party. Make it worth her while to WANT to open the door. Banging on the door just confuses and frightens her. Dementia strips away reasoning. She has to think it's her own idea to come out. Even playing a little music and people laughing would entice her to emerge to see what's going on.

My best wishes to the poor lady. This is the edited video. The unedited one is even more disgusting... she has to stand for almost an hour next to the store entrance. Barefoot (they took the shoes/sandals along), handcuffed, denied water to wet her lips (she asks multiple times). They manage to organize someone to take care of her dog (about 1200USD to get the dog back?...WTF) but no medical assistance whatsoever? It takes them almost a full hour to produce "A" lighter she's allegedly threatened to the set bathroom on fire with... Guess that bathroom was far bigger than it looked in the video...

This female officer is very inconsiderate and should not do this job. If you are laughin gat someone distressed in a bathroom, while you tap on the door and freak them out, go work elsewhere. Just entirely the wrong attitude. Flicking the taser when the woman said "I've never been to jail, I don't want to go" the officer says "Well then come out" and then starts triggering her taser which freaks the lady out and makes the cop laugh.
