Great update Richard. I'd seen these wall sections on the net but wondered just how good they'd look in situ on a layout, you've answered that question for me & they do look really great. The station is coming along really nicely, very envious of your modelling skills & love the escalators, As always, really look forward to your next update so keep them coming. Cheers Ian.

I look forward to the updates and this is a great update. I am just starting out on building a model railway based on the Western region 1973. Life on the western (Life on Mars, will have to feature a MK3 Cortina i had one just like the show) during the mid 1970's is close to my heart many a summer holiday spent watchIng Class 52's etc. Penzance, St Austell, Newquay, Dawlish & Par were some of the location i was at during this time. Sadly for me it all ended in 1977 when the Class 52 ceased running which coincided with me becoming 21 and a change of holiday destination the following year to the Isle of Wight with my GF who has now been my wife for 33 years.

Nice work on the layout mate. I like the work you have done with the retaining wall panels as I am looking into using this on my planned layout. Nice to see that you also build model kits as well as I have just started getting into the Revell and the Tamiya 1/24 scale cars. I have also got the Moebius 1952 Hudson Hornet which I am looking forward to building once the rest of my new tools arrived to me in the post :). Ash.

A great update Richard and very helpful for me on several counts, I shall be installing a retaining wall where the upper level goes parallel to the terminus so that link you included and showing how to install it has come in very handy, thanks. I also use that Rocket card glue too, it's great stuff and as you say, glues a lot of other materials other than card - I think I ought to buy some shares from them as I use so much! Keep up the excellent work ............Graham

Glad to see the HST back in action. I hope to see the HST arrive at Dean Park in the summer, I have a few on order! Nice bit of scratch building on the station, really like it. Retaining wall looks good. You should use the Bachmann houses that are under construction 44-094 to represent a new 80's housing estate under construction, with plant machinery and porta-cabins etc. Just a thought!

Looking great, Like the idea of the retaining wall - turns a difficult area into a very good looking and interesting background. I am with you on the Deluxe card glue. I was sceptical when Deluxe sent me a sample to try/test, but can honestly say I really am impressed with it - sticks almost anything. On the hornby stuff - not surprised. I junked all my Hornby stuff a while back except my Pullmans due to running issues, Hejan, Bachmann, Vitrains no probs but Hornby... umm not impressed.

Really nice up date Richard. Even I am a scale 1:32 guy and have German DB trains I have learned a lot from your video's and are always looking forward for your next up date. Unfortunately I don't have the space at the moment to make the lay out I am dreaming of (It will take minimum 200 square M.), but I am making some interesting buildings such as a train station with platforms which will end up to be 4,5 m. long. Hi mate, Fantastic layout update as always. I'll take the HST off your hands if it's giving you bother! :-) In regards to the derailing I would check the back to backs of the wheels. Tony Wright suggests using a long piece of metal or similar of the right width which you can stick between all the axles on a coach simultaneously to see if they're all aligned with one another as well as the right size. If the back to backs are not in alignment with each other it can also cause derailment. I myself have been replacing all the wheels on my Lima Mk3s and Hornby Mk4s with new Hornby wheels R8096 as used on the Hornby Mk3s you have. So far I've been through at least 40 or 50 axles. A lot of those back to backs were out so you might have some success at curing the derailments if you have a look at those and adjust as necessary. Just for your information, only the TGS and some of the variants of the buffet car (the ones with 4 full windows) are from the Lima tooling (the buffet car having been modified to the 4 window type). The rest are Hornby's own tooling and were available for sale whilst Lima still existed. Good luck with it and I look forward to your next update.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. I have a back to back gauge and use it a lot. I've checked all the coaches and the back to backs are all good. However I don't like the look of some of the wheels and will be replacing as nessesary. The main reason for the derailments is the weight of the train pulling back on the lead coach when going uphill. I have fixed it for now by adding a large amount of weight to the lead coach. However i'm not sure if the issue is resolved for good so will be monitoring things for some time.

nice and i will be watching got see what you put up there on future updates. It suddenly occurred to me watching your video what other dmu's would suit your era and location? 2 came to mind - a class 121 bubble car in NSE, BR Blue, or BR Blue/Grey. The second (although pushing your era slightly) being a class 165 (not a 166 as i thought that would be out of your era for definite) as they were first in service in 1990. A 165 could easily be converted from a Bachmann 166 with a few tweaks and transfers. You could roll it out in ex-works finish. Just a suggestion.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
Dapol are doing a 121 in NSE and its firmly on my list. A 165 would just fit the era and could be a nice project for me. I'll look into it.

Hi Richard, excellent layout. I like the new retaining wall - I've been looking for something similar for my own layout so I'll check out the website link. Regarding the derailing coaches, I assume it may be something to do with the wheel profile. I have some Mark 3 sleeper coaches which are of the old Lima tooling. They were terrible for derailing on points - I don't know if it's the flanges are too big or whether the wheel profile is slightly on the wide side. I notice you have some Bachmann TEA wagons, do you have any issues with those derailing? I have a rake of them and they don't seem to like Hornby standard points.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
I have a rake of 13 TEA wagons. I had to fill the lead wagon with weight to help on corners. Other than that they are unmodified. I personally avoid hornby points after my last layout, they caused me many issues.

Great video - again. One question - at about 3:09 into the video you put the bottle of Liquid Gravity on some ground cover scenery, and it is exactly the type of ground cover effect I am trying to create on my shunting layout. Do any of your videos detail how you created it? If not, can you do one, soonish, please?
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
I don't have any videos on that particular part. I made the effect using a mix of scatters and soaking them with different paints. I then put a thin layer of static grass over the top.

I have also had Hornby mk3s derailing - I have replaced a rake with Lima ones which stay on the track much better. However the new Hornby class 43s run fine unlike the Lima ones of which I have many. So, do I run new Hornby power cars with Lima mk3s which may show the difference in paint quality, or get my Lima power cars upgraded to run uniform rakes? Loving the layout btw...James

Looking good. I though I was the only one with poor running Hornby coaches. The ex-LNER coaches on my layout are pretty reasonable but will only run in certain combinations but the Pullman's are a bit of a nightmare. The problem isn't limited to Hornby either. Bachmann coaches also won't run in certain combinations and some stay in the carriage sidings. Rakes up to about six coaches of either make are tolerable but lengths of more increase in unreliability in proportion to their increasing length. I know the problem here, its the couplings. The expanding couplings don't do it for me, they jam up and cause no end of problems. I would rather have a slightly larger gap and reliable running. Paying £40 plus for a coach and not have it running perfectly is very dissapointing. Doug
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
I understand your frustration. I have had better luck with bachmann coaches but only when they are couple in a fixed rake with the plastic drawbar that comes in the box. Most of my hornby coaches have been converted to kadee couplers. I'm considering doing the mk3s too.
@dougattrenholmebar

Dear Everard Junction. Have you painted all the blue/grey coaches in NSE colours. or Have you kept 1 or 2 in the standard BR livery? I mean knowing BR (witch isn`t a whole lot conciddering i live in Holland ;) ) it wouldn`t have been too uncommon to see a blue/grey MK1 inbetween all the NSE MK1`s. Or am I wrong on that point? Also nice 08. That model souldn`t be missed on any layout that depicts any period after the late/mid 60`s
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
You are correct, blue/grey coaches were often seen in rakes of nse stock. By 1989 most had been repainted, but there was still some that never got repainted. I've left 2 coaches in blue/grey to represent that.

Richard, do you know why Hornby are the only HST producers? Any reason why Bachmann (or anyone else for that matter) haven't produced a HST?
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction 10 жыл бұрын
I guess nobody else makes an HST because hornby already makes a good one (at least the powercars, not coaches) Makers tend to avoid making the same things as each other due to reduced market share from the competing models. Thats why hornby doesn't make many high standard deisels, because bachmann and heljan already make them.
