I was 4 years old at the San Francisco Zoo, in the big cat house during lunch. A tiger roared about 30 inches away from my face, then proceeded to bite into a steak that was roughly the same size as I was. My mom was worried because I was shaking, but I was so excited and awestruck, and had faith in that thick panel between us. Gives me goosebumps just recalling it. Big cats are amazing!

Male lions are very lazy in the wild and mainly depend on the females in the pride for food, he can eat and nap all he wants in here. They also die a very painful death when they're too old and weak to protect their pride from other male lions. He doesn't have to go through that in here.

My wife, kids, and I were in the big cats house at the zoo one afternoon and we came across a couple of female lionesses and a very large male in his prime. He decided to stand up and start roaring. The entire buidling started trembling at this indescribable roar. It felt like we were experiencing an earthquake. Your internal organs start vibrating along with his roaring. This video is amazing, but to experience it in person is on an entirely different level. It's an experience that will stick with you for the rest of your life. All hail the king!!!

I’m the type of person that is not naturally scared of wildlife. I have to ‘logically’ tell myself that getting close to a bear or any wild animal is dangerous. For some reason I don’t feel the fear that should be built in to me for survival. Having said that.. I stayed at a tented camp in Kenya. The thought of wildlife being around me was my dream come true. Then at night, we hear a lion roar. It had to be in the distance because the tents were surrounded by an electric fence. So logically I knew I was safe, but the vibration that was sent through my body was the scariest thing I have ever felt. I was both afraid and extremely happy to know that some of my instincts had survived and were alive and well. It’s completely fascinating how they must have been passed down to me from distant ancestors who would had encounters with lions.

When visiting the Melbourne zoo with my family the male lion did the same thing even though we weren’t at the enclosure literally every body around stopped in their tracks looking around ,you could feel the tension ,it really gave a sense of raw power I will never forget
