This caller opened up to James O'Brien that he used to be racist and nearly joined the BNP simply because he was from a small town and had never integrated.
"This is difficult for me to talk about because it's something I'm ashamed about," the caller Charlie said, "I'm a white guy from a rural area and when I was between the ages of 13 to 15 I was quite a racist person."
James reminded him there was no shame in admitting that on the basis that he no longer is.
Charlie said he felt compelled to ring in: "The lack of education that I received on it and the influx of media influence...even though I had parents who spoke of love and compassion and talked very strongly against it.
"I was a paper boy and I would read the papers as I was going around and every single day you'd hear negative things in thee newspapers about young black kids specifically and Muslims and it turned me into this horrible, horrible person."
Charlie told James that what is not highlighted enough is the fact that in these rural communities, people only see what they know: "There was one black person in my entire school and he was a teacher."

@@Smilejustsmilebbyno, it absolutely is a lack of education. You wanna know why? It’s because hatred and racism are usually built on fear and ignorance, which is built up by believing false facts that a tiny bit of examination would reveal as such. I’m from a northern mill town n I’ve gotta say racism is still pretty rife amongst the predominantly white working classes, especially in regards to their Pakistani n Indian neighbours. Most aren’t horrible people they’re just poorly educated and fed up after being completely left behind by decades of poor governing. When the white workin classes stop blaming n hating their fellow workin people no matter their race n finally come to terms with the fact that we’re all being completely mugged off by a tiny minority of white people who’ve been lucky enough to be born into a rich family with links to the establishment then n only then will this country move in a direction that benefits the majority n not the few. This is a class problem n not a race issue, we need to realise that before it’s too late

That this caller was radicalised solely by reading the newspapers he was delivering as a paperboy is very important & telling! Murdoch internationally, and in the UK, the Barclay Brothers, & Desmond gushing divisive bigotry continuously for decades into public forums has made the rightwing what it is today. Ownership of the media matters, and they need to have stronger regulation of how many media outlets can be owned by the same persons or single entities. Also such media should not be able to call themselves "news" if their source checking can't be shown regularly to meet recognised journalistic standards.

I see where he's coming from I grew up in the Welsh valleys, you had people criticizing "blacks" etc, yet they had never met anyone from that demographic. My attitude changed in life when I moved to London for university/work. I remember introducing my girlfriend to a family members who had never left wales "Who's the coloured piece of stuff" said one uncle.

Poor lad was a product of his environment. Glad for his sake and everyone's that he grew out of it. I'm the youngest son of a family of Sun readers and let's just say I think I can somewhat empathize. The only member of the house to swing pretty fully left in response and rebellion to clearly faulted messaging seen there. I know my enemy better than most of my peers I daresay, which arms me pretty well for life. People can go one way or the other with these things. It is deeply insidious and powerful and I have to forgive and credit if he is being fully sincere. People who grow should be proud of their development, from any base.

The amount of sincerity from both parts here is really heart-warming. Blessings should never be horded up like gold in a treasure trove and selfishly hidden away, it should always be passed on! The caller hits the nail on the head with education, if you have the understanding, pass that onto others. Elevate everyone else's understanding. Just be aware that you can't change a mind that's unwilling to change.

I can relate to this. Growing up in a very small town in the U.S. it wasn't until college that I had to face the ignorant indoctrination I grew up with and had been holding onto. There's got to be a way out to get out too. There were people who sort of defended me, someone trying to understand and work through their ignorance, and acted as a buffer to those who just wanted to label me as "enemy". There are plenty of bigots who hold their ignorance as a core facet of their identity. I think most just honestly don't know what they're doing and, especially now that the right has weaponized the feeling of being wrong. "Don't believe your eyes and ears and thoughts. Believe what I tell you and anyone telling you otherwise is your enemy".

Unfortunately, this entire thing isn't about BLM or racism at all. It's a very organized and controlled coup attempt against our society and government by ANTIFA and the far left. Follow the money and the plan. Just who is paying to deliver pallets of bricks to street corners along protest routes? Who is directing groups of arsonists and rioters to places where the cops aren't? Both Blacks and Whites are now being played against each other.

His honest reflection conjured up those rurally brought up people who are now living abroad (aka Expats). They reach a certain age in their second home but have never made a local friend nor learned the local language and yet have the face to be critical of what they proudly call their new home and its culture. I don't understand that combo of racism and sense of entitlement. It's really toxic.

J listened carefully to this and what I always ask people who hold those views is where is your humanity? Where is the kindness? Where is the empathy? These are not black and white things. He even had parents who were a bit more sympathetic but still you dont acknowledge your choices and responsibility. Too often we use this type of experience as an excuse for their inherent racism. Glad he has educated himself to realise that we are all humans. I have run out of patience.

13 to15 is the most obnoxious age for most people. I saw more casual cruelty, bullying, racism and bigotry at that age than any other (which is almost always insecurity) and a lot of people look the other way in case they become a target. Few kids stand against it all. The lucky ones mature once they are out of that environment. I even saw teachers look the other way at times (thinking of one kid in particular), as unbelievable as that is. I hope that's changed in the last thirty years.
