@UTU499 күн бұрын
Yeah, I think couples benefit from accepting that they may not share all interests. You may or may not enjoy learning chess. Chess may or may not come to feel that it is part of who you are. Perhaps some time in the near future, you will come to the conclusion that chess is just not a thing that fits into your life or your identity. Or perhaps chess will decisively become a part of your life. Perhaps one day in the future, if someone asks you if you are a chess player, you will feel very comfortable saying, "Yes I play chess." Nobody can know whether or not chess will become a part of your life until you find out for yourself. I've got a good, related story. My best friend and his wife are super nice and thoughtful people. At the beginning of their relationship, they thought that they should each watch every single one of the others favorite movies. This was a mistake. My friend likes movies about serial killers. His wife does not like them at all. It took them a little while to figure out that it just wasn't working for her to watch all of his favorite movies. Some of them were just way to violent or grim or depressing for her. My friend has many positive qualities, but, like everybody else, he does have his blind spots.

I am not a good chess player, but I do feel that I have a good handle on nearly all the rules. I don't think you can call yourself a serious chess player until you understand exactly how the 3 special moves work: the pawn's optional initial 2-square move, castling, and the en passant pawn capture. I also feel that I have a decent understand of some of the main chess principles and tactics. I do not know chess openings and endings. I'm explaining this in order to communicate that I am not a chess expert, and also to introduce the fact that I think I have unique and astute ways of thinking of the characteristics of the different pieces. Here are ways I perceive the different pieces. I've read a couple of chess books, but I've never felt that any of them perceived the pieces the way I do or compared the pieces to each other the way I do. 1. If you've read this far then I'm sure you already know that Rooks can move only along rows and columns, and that Bishops can move only along diagonals. 2. The King can move only one square but in any direction. 3. Here's where I think I have a unique perspective on Chess. The Rook, the Bishop, and the King can be seen as the conceptual building blocks, needed to understand all the other pieces. 4. The Queen has all of the abilities of both the Rook and the Bishop. Therefore, the Queen can be seen as being a Rook-Bishop... Or a Super-King. You can also think of the King as being a Limited-Queen. 4. Similarly, I think of the Knight as being an Anti-Queen... And I also think of it as a Spider, because it can typically move to exactly 8 other squares evenly spaced around the Knight. 5. The Pawn has a limited ability to move and capture like the King does, so I think of a Pawn as a Limited-King. 6. Pawns work together, move slowly, are a limited threat, and form a limited barrier... So I think of a group of 2 or 3 or more pawns as behaving like a barbed wire fence. I have never seen anyone else talk about the pieces using these perceptual concepts, but they certainly help my understanding of how all the pieces move and how their abilities compare to one another. If anyone wants clarification on what I mean by any these ideas, I'm happy to clarify.

You forgot about the 'Petunk' move, its a common variation of the game It goes like this: If a player has not moved his Rook with 8 moves the opposing player then has the power of Petunk. This only lasts for a further 8 moves before being cancelled. At any time during those 8 moves the player with the power of Petunk can throw HIS or her Rook AT the opposing player. The purpose is to strike your opponent in the head scoring 3 'Petunk points' Cruically they must also shout 'PETUNK !' loudly or the move is invalidated Since it is done without warning there is a good chance of scoring HOWEVER, if the player on the receiving end of the Petunk can deflect the piece using his hands then he scores a single point AND the power of Petunk is handed to that player and their opponent becomes 'Un-Petunked '

The video made it a bit confusing, but you're right. If there are only Kings on the board, the game would immediately end in a draw (draw by insufficient material). For the video example they should have put a few more pieces on the board. All the best!

@David7177173 жыл бұрын
Well that explanation wasn't very well, as it was mainly about edge cases. Who ever wants to play this beautiful game, play it without these edge cases in the begining. Just remember: Rock - move in straight lines. Bishop - move in diagnols. Knight - 2 squares straight and one sqare aside. Queen - straight and diagnols. King - like queen but only one sqare. Pawn - moves only forward one swaure each time, and can move 2 squares at the first time it moves. It eats in diagnol (one sqare in diagnol). If pawn reaches the last line, he can becomes what ever you chose. The goal: threat the king of the other side, and that king has nothing to do. Check mate.
