Brandon, your tutorials are my milestones along this fresh journey through DAWs with S1. Sure, there are many others making tutorials but they are the "in-betweeners". Your name choice is perfect because almost every tutorial of yours gives me a quantum leap in my knowledge/understanding. Like this one. I had no idea of the many block manipulation commands available, and I've been spending 80% of my S1 time in MIDII ! Thanks so much, mate. I hope you keep making these as long as the Universe has music in it 👌 Now... for those of you who - like me! - are enjoying freeloading off Quanta;'s knowledge - CONTRIBUTE! Here's the thing: If a friend spent even a fraction of his time helping you learn this stuff, wouldn't you - at the very least - take him out for a good meal? So FFS, click on the link below and clear your conscience... (Which should be hiding right somewhere there in your music brain, ha ha) Ish. (A music wayfarer)

thankyou so much for doing this! is there any way we can deactivate notes? I notice there is mute that might be the closest thing. I also don't like when I write into a note it seems to delete it for the one I overlay, it doesn't split it, I hope there is a way to disable that. My point really being in Older Ableton I would drop melodic patters and chords I'm writing the song on and I'd deactivate and write over. Now that Ableton has overlays of notes that isn't an issue anymore, but even if I had that functionality with disabling notes I would have all that information on that as I write. So I'm hoping there is something like that too. I guess I can just lay over and mute also and work my best with that thanks!

Hi ! Thank you for the video , learnt some very useful tips and some very cool features from your video . Im not sure if its in another video or already mentioned somewhere but i missed it , but was wondering if there is a feature for .. say i have recorded a long passage with my MIDI device and maybe a few notes are maybe sometimes slightly off beat . is there a way for me to sync the entire recorded MIDI recording to the track/tempo without manually detecting / nudging those few notes ?
@quantaaudio3 жыл бұрын
You could select your MIDI recording in the arrange view - by clicking once on it - and press "Q" on your keyboard. This will "snap" all of your notes to your current quantize value based on the song tempo. If your timing is off by just a little bit, then you should set your quantize value to a high resolution, like 1/32nd, or 1/64th. Experiment - undo/ctrl + z is your friend. I will say, though, applying quantization to your entire MIDI recording may make it sound a bit robotic/mechanized. So, it might be best for you to play your song, and then where there are notes that are out of tempo, click-hold-drag to select them, then press "Q", for more precise control. This topic is covered in this video, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fonLZnycd7N5Y8U

Thank you for your superb instructional videos Quanta! I have found your style and content to be among the most insightful that is available anywhere, and once again, this one is right on the money for me... one thing from a prior video I have had trouble with is the Alt-click on a group of notes to bring them all to the same end-point... (?) I believe one of your prior videos showed that as a shortcut key, however I am not having success with that... is it now changed in V4.6? Or perhaps there is another way to have several notes snap to the same end-point? (EDIT: Upon searching the manual I suppose "Quantize Note Ends" in Musical Functions is what I am looking for - regardless, I reckon you or other readers here might know why Alt-clicking is not working for me?? Kensington Orbit Optical Trackball maybe is the problem???)
@quantaaudio5 жыл бұрын
Steve, thanks for the kind words and message. As far as the note extension function, it seems you now need to hold down both "Alt" and "Ctrl" at the same time in order to achieve this. Also, if you have multiple notes of varying length selected, you can hold "Alt" while hovering at the end of the shortest one, and then drag out to extend the shorter ones to the length of the longest.

Your videos are excellent. I'm brand new to both DAWs and Studio One. As a guitarist, my keyboard skills are, um, weak? When I enter data via keyboard and have a section of the same note values, say all eighth notes, is there a way to make them all uniform in duration? I might intend to play a note as an eighth but hold it longer, and sometimes with simultaneous notes, I sometimes hold down on key longer than the other. I've been trying to clean it up note at a time but I'm guessing S1 v5 has a shortcut? Thanks again for great videos.

This tutorial was about using the features of the MIDI editor. I learned many things, including how many ways there are to accomplish the same thing. I'm still looking, however, for a tutorial that explains WHY a musician might do things. Is it good to "rush" the note? If the music is four quarter notes, should they all be a quarter note long? What about 1/8 note length on a 1/4 note cadence? You showed HOW to change velocity, but not WHY. What about modulation, pitch bend and after touch? I'm trying to understand two aspects--first, how to paint from sheet music into the MIDI editor; and second, how to realize the music I hear in my head.

thanks!!!! do you know if there is a way to display velocity as a midi numeric value from 1-127 instead of the 0-100%?
@quantaaudio5 жыл бұрын
Within the MIDI editor, look just underneath the piano keys (in the parameter automation lane) and you should see a vertical column that lists the values as "0.00 - 50.00 - 100.00". Right-click in this column and you should see the option to change it to MIDI values.

Hi, I learned a lot from this tutorial. In Cakewalk Sonar I could select all the same midi notes by clicking the cursor on a specific virtual keyboard key on the left and thus I was able to select only that note in the entire track and edit its height (transpose) How do I do that in Studio One ? Thank you very much. Gustavo Fisch
@quantaaudio3 жыл бұрын
You can use the same method within Studio One, but you need to hold down "Ctrl" on your computer keyboard while clicking on the virtual keyboard within S1's editor. Or hold "Command" if you're on a Mac.

@quantaaudio3 жыл бұрын
I think you should focus your attention on the settings for your MIDI keyboard/controller. This will trump the settings within Studio One. You will probably need to refer to the manual for your particular keyboard controller in order to figure out how to adjust this setting.
@kookle6584 жыл бұрын
can you select a note and apply pitch bend?
@quantaaudio4 жыл бұрын
You would need to access the pitch bend tab in the parameter automation lane at the bottom of the editor window. Activate the paint tool and add a couple/several points and then adjust them to the bend amount you'd like. You could also just record the pitch bend live using an external controller, if you have one...

Hey thanks for this. I have one question that always bedevils me: is there a way to "hide" midi notes? eg; when editing drums, I manually edit hihats and bring their velocities down by dragging with the mouse. However whenever velocity values of different notes are "stacked" on top of each other in the same spot, (kick, snare, etc), it's hard to tell which one I am editing even if the note is selected.
@quantaaudio5 жыл бұрын
If you select the MIDI note with the arrow tool by clicking once, it should turn white, and the corresponding velocity bar for that note should turn white, as well. At this point it should be the only one that is adjusted when you hover and use the pointer finger to change the velocity. If, as you mentioned this is not working for you, you can always select the note, then, within the MIDI editor inspector, to the left, you can manually input a value into the velocity field. Or you can just hover over the field and use your mouse wheel to adjust... Alternatively, you could activate the paint tool by pressing "3" on your QWERTY keyboard then hover over the MIDI note you'd like to adjust, press and hold "Alt" and then drag up/down. This will adjust the notes' velocity, as well.
@maraboo725 жыл бұрын
It is also possible to click on the instrument on the left side of the editor f.e. hihat or whatever you named it. Then the complete row for this instrument is selected and you can edit the velocity you want. Clicking into the velocity row and clicking you can choose the complete hihat row and edit the velocity of all of them. It is not a way to hide the other instruments but to hilite the instrument you want to edit. Edit : It only works in drummode not in melodic mode

I think by "drawing them in and moving by micro-values" they mean like, clicking in the piano roll and dragging across to the desired length of the chosen note, however, the dagger is moving in increments as opposed to being free flowing. Like its locked to a mini grid and they can't draw out notes to lengths in between these "micro incrememnts". For example, you want a note to have some expression. Some humanity. So you dobt want it snapped to the grid. You dont want the note to go from point 1 to point 2. You want it to go from point 1 to point 1.8. But it only has options 1, 1.5 and 2 and nothing in between...if that made sense..also 2 years late lol

@@quantaaudio i have to admit there is a bit of room for improvement, like midi features i miss from logic via the midi transform menu....ie. specific quantization strength, randomizing values of various things etc. but i can pretty easily survive without those. what i desperately miss is retrospective midi record, s1 is literally the only daw that doesn't have it and i can't figure out why.
@quantaaudio5 жыл бұрын
@nicebluejay ...now, the retrospective record feature, I can completely understand wanting this in S1. As far as the other stuff, I guess I'm just kind of an old-head in that I don't like code to touch/alter my music too much. This just a personal thing, however. But, I do feel that some of the features you've mentioned are available, currently, in S1. For instance, "quantize strength". If you select the notes you'd like to apply this to, and then go to the "action" menu at the top of the editor window. Navigate to the "quantize", and then choose "Quantize notes...", within the window that pops up you can choose strength. And the strength setting is also available in the arrange view quantize panel if you click on the "Q" button. There's also a randomization feature for different values of the MIDI notes within the Action menu under the "Process" section. Did you see the vid I did on the Action menu features?
