I appreciate that you suggest learning tstop first. In my basic 5 class they taught us hockey stop before tstop and I struggled to get the hockey stop.

Some of the Basic Skills organization confuses me sometimes. I feel like there is a good progression through some moves that allows skaters to build from one skill to another, but it doesn’t always like up with that program.

I grew up playing pond hockey and recently ended up with a house that has its own pond! But I'm kinda struggling with some injuries and post surgery aftermath from my time in the service but still enjoy skating because it's one of the few low impact things I can do and also one of the few things that calms me down and brings me joy. So, I started becoming more interested in figure skating as it's helping me use some of my muscles again and gets me off my lazy butt lol ... I wanted to let you know I really enjoy your videos. You are extremely pleasant which always helps my already difficult moods and I love that I can take you out on the ice with me anytime I want on my phone with these videos. So... thank you! \o/ Edit: it rained. My ice!! 😔

I just wanted to say I went ice skating for the first time in my life yesterday. I’ve always wanted to learn but never had the opportunity to. Now I finally live 20 minutes away from a rink. After a hard 2 &1/2 hours of learning to skate I can do forward lemons, backward lemons and I’m working on my forward crossovers (my left side is decent, my right is not so decent lol) I can’t wait to go skating again. I learned quickly because of your tutorials, simple and easy to follow and a joy to listen to. Thank you so much, keep up the good work!

Once again, thank you for these very helpful videos. A couple of things that were helpful to me. My big "block" when it came to the Hockey Stop was simply fear. At my age (pushing 60) falls are a lot more...intimidating...than when I was 18. The way we got past that was to simply start very, very slow. Just get a little bit of forward motion and stop. And with all the stops, some time at the wall, practicing "making snow"--scraping the blade across the ice to find the angle where it slides across the ice rather than digging in the edge--stopping your feet suddenly while your body keeps moving and you end up face-planting on the ice. I have to wonder about the Learn to Skate USA progression for adults. Hockey stops are learned at Adult 4, T-stops at Adult 6. It just seems to me like T-stops should be learned before Hockey stops. And again, thank you for all the work you do here. It's very helpful to my own skating.

Thank you for such a detailed video. I can’t do any stops yet, and I’m trying to work out which one would suit me best. As a result I’ve become really good at avoiding situations, but for safety I really need to be brave and learn how to stop. I only started skating at 60 and thought if I don’t do it now I’ll lose my nerve and always regret it. Small steps at my age! 🤣

Awesome that you are getting out on the ice. People usually start with a Snowplow Stop, then learn the T Stop, then move on to the Hockey stop, and maybe sometime down the road learn the Show Stop. I have tutorials for all of these in a 'stopping playlist'.

Hello, I'm new to skating, been doing learning on my own with the help of u-tube videos (2 months now) , yours are my favorite, but anyway, I'm older and not going to be a figure skater or hockey player but bought hockey skates and just want to rec. skate. I start my first Basic 1 class soon. I have 2 questions, I noticed that hockey skating videos teach hockey stops with a wider stance is that correct and why? also it seems like figure skaters are more upright and hockey players bend there knees more, why is that? thanks for taking the time to do these videos, I actually learned to do a basic fwd crossover in a very short time just watching you.

Hi Coach Julia. I can not figure out what weight distribution should be before turning the hips and feet. 50/50? Or is more weight on one foot when you quickly Manuever 90°? And during the turn I also can not figure out where on the blades do you put more pressure in heel or toe or on the rocker area for each foot? I really love your coaching videos Julia. Thank you 😊 💓

Your ”teacher” was wrong. There is no such a thing as someone that can’t be thought. Full stop. You just need another teacher that can break down the moves for you in a different way! Clearly what she was doing was not working, a good teacher would adapt. I am glad you quit training with someone that says this to you, but I hope you still enjoy ice skating, and find a good teacher just as good and lovely as coach Julia!

we are not learning it like this, it is just natural =))
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
I am sure is a natural move for some skaters, but for many it is very challenging. And as someone who has coached for 16 years, this is the way I have found that most people can learn this stop.
