I taught myself to swim at 45. Decided I had enough of being afraid of the water, got in the pool and brute forced my way thru it. Went to the pool 2x a week non-stop for many months and was able to get from one side to the other without drowning. Now, I'm teaching myself to lap swim, it's taking much longer but improving a tiny bit every week. I should take formal lessons, but I'm a bit embarrassed at my age.

Come back here to say thank you. I’ve tried to learn swimming by myself for more than a week. I learn the breaststroke but I was struggling to breathe while doing it . Every time I head up to get a breath, my body sinks deeper. It makes me panicked and couldn’t swim further. But after watching your video, I find myself more confident in water, I know how to make myself float. It makes me calmer even when my body sinks deep. And as a result, I finally know how to swim breaststroke!!! I can swim, breathe, swim, breathe without no issue! Thank you so so much for your instruction video! It is simple and easy to follow but very effective!

Here in Germany, I was tought breast stroke in my childhood and I am still angry about this, because after I have been some years in a swimming club it should be the crawl style to be taught first. It really could safe your life. Most people here think, that they can keep theire head above the water, while swimming. But in a life threatening situation, crawl is, what could get you out.

@@user1name1here Great question, it can vary a lot! Most training pools are between about 24-27 degrees Celcius, however leisure pools can often be as warm as 33 degrees Celcius! Training pools are colder as it can be uncomfortable to train in a hot pool, especially when swimming longer efforts. If you're just in the pool for fun however, it needs to be warm enough that you don't get cold!

It's like they're robots and can't accept that there are different swim styles. I like that you showed doggy style because I just want to swim around with friends in a pool or open water. I don't see people doing freestyle swimming with their heads underwater when they're swimming around recreationally.

Trying to learn some skills recently and as a large, muscle bound powerlifter, I'm finding this very difficult. I was able to float on my back sustainably, but my mouth and face are a good 6 inches or so below the surface. Full lungs. Without goggles, I get quite nervous but I was pretty relaxed tonight and stayed on my back for about a minute in that position, well balanced feet and torso with minor input from moving hands. I cannot find any position in any swimming method where my head is close enough to the surface that I can get a breath unless I'm putting a very large amount of effort into it, which is not sustainable. I get maybe one breath if I'm pushing hard for the surface, but I doubt I'd have the energy for a second. No way to do it if I remain relaxed. With goggles and nose plug, I can move around in the water relatively well. Just tend to sit about a foot or two below the surface on average. I can't find any tips about this for us meaty thicc boys. I really enjoy the process, but I'm limited to one breath at a time, then standing up.
