What a nice video of an exceptional artist. And superb piano too! Sometimes when I need to calm down I listen to the beautiful music. I often wonder why in the 21 century painters of such caliber no longer exist. I believe mankind has lost something significant along the way.*Thank you for making the world more beautiful.*

You make an interesting observation and ask a pertinent question. I, as a 70 year old watercolourist who has drawn and painted since early child hood am sorely tempted to answer that question......but then again, I'd simply risk being targetted as a pretentious snob. Which perhaps speaks to the times in which we live. But do carry on admiring this fantastic heritage that has survived long enough to be passed on down to us. These paintings have the power of transporting one, if one is so inclined, into another time, another era, certainly a very different place than that in which we find ourselves today. And that is a fascinating revelation to behold.

Spectacularly breath taking masterpieces here folks. Awe inspiring! It is interesting to see how he so often depicts the human presence as diminutive in the face of raw, overwhelming energy and spectacular power of nature unleashed. Yet he is equally at home in capturing reclining and relaxed people going about their daily routines amid the magnificent and all encompassing glow of an evening sunset.

Not known? He's the most famous seascape painter ever, rivalled only by J. M. Turner. Just to say, I like Turner far more, I think Aivazovsky's drawing concept is a bit naive. In his less successful works he seems outdated. You should learn to look with a critical eye. Then you would find that e.g. Repin, a Ukrainian, or Levitan, a Polish Jew, or Shishkin, A Russian, were high class masters but Aivazovsky possibly wasn't that good. He had many masterpieces, of course.

No video gallery of his works can reflect the sheer majesty of real marine paintings, scattered through several world class museums ( Tretiakov in Moscow, Russian State museum in StPetersburg, Ayvazovsky’s home museum in Feodosia, Crimea). I was privileged, being born in StPetersburg, growing up there, spending hours in front of his “Ninth wave” and several other master pieces. The size of that painting could take you right to a little raft, barely hanging in front of a giant wave. The sheer terror of that wave haunted me for a long time after I saw it for the first time at 10. Hiking through Crimea, spending time in many places there, I recognize these places on his paintings, most of which are in Feodosia’s museum. Ayvazovsky ( Ayvazian) spent quite a few years in Italy, leaving us unforgettable images of Amalfi coast, Capri and Venice. But most importantly, no other marine artist in the world, including famous English ones, reached the secret of water translucency like him!

I love his ability to capture light on water and his skies are beautiful with both sun and moon paintings, however sometimes I can't help but feel that less boats might be better, they often overcrowded the paintings. Or maybe it's because I just watched around 700 of them one after the other...
@AiThrowaway2 жыл бұрын
the artistic movement he was a part of at the time, romanticism, focused on emotional struggles primarily. To them, a great seascape would be empty without the boat. Aivazovsky used seascapes to express the unyielding forces of nature contrasted to the determination of humans, despite how disadvantaged the scene has it set up. Likewise with the celebration and peacefulness of a successful battle against nature, despite how small the victory's rewards might be. I'm not sure what the movement might be called now. Though I can appreciate where he was coming from I find beauty in a some sense of liminal emptiness and longing in paintings as well. The conflicts he saw just aren't the same as those we can see from our place in the future.
