Before I was comfortable eating wild mushrooms, I found a giant puffball in my neighbors yard, which was in the middle of a very developed area. His yard was tiny, and there was this 8” white ball, growing out of it. He thought it was poisonous, and I wasn’t sure, so I took it home. I remember cutting it open and seeing the Snow White inside... I wanted to eat it, but had no clue about wild mushrooms... so I put it in the compost pile... huge mistake, obviously lol
@darrenmcwhiney32203 жыл бұрын
I also thought they were poisonous!🐒

@Frankie Flores I am by no means an expert, or anyone to ask about wild varieties of mushrooms. I wouldn’t feel comfortable, at all, giving you advice about what you described. I hope you understand, I don’t want to give out bad information. I can, however, say with a certain level of confidence that black puff ball mushrooms are indeed poisonous. Beyond that, I can’t say if what you described actually is a puff ball or not.

One of my favorite wild edibles. When found in good numbers can be kept for weeks in the refrigerator when stored correctly. Smaller specimens can be kept whole but larger ones will have to be halved or quartered. Cover the sliced/exposed areas with plastic and store in paper bags with damp (not wet) paper towels in the bottom of the refrigerator. This will extend the length of time you can enjoy them if found in large numbers like this. They can also be frozen once cooked and later added to soups or stews. And although they dry and store well if dried in 2 x 1/2 inch strips they just seem to disappear when added to soups or stews. The flavor is definitely there though.

Hey Adam - I enjoyed the Vid very much! I've read the comments, looking for anecdotal evidence of the conditions in your area at the time of this fortuitous find... but all I was able to determine was a period of good rainfall following a dry-spell in your area. Do you happen to remember (or have notes in a journal?) any more of the particular environmental/atmospheric conditions that might have contributed to this extraordinary find? I'm hunting NE of you (Connecticut), in an old growth hardwood forest that is literally exploding with mushrooms, inter alia, this year. I'd like to hear your hypotheses on the "why" of your particular find, so that I can be alert for similar conditions developing near me... I'd like to add a giant puffball to my (found!) list. Thanks so much.
