Would a hot creasing iron also work, or must a flame be used?

Good question. If you tried this with a creasing iron, you would get liquid edge paint on the tip, and it would begin to burn. A flame for a split second won't affect the paint.

Might this be a useful hack to get a better finish overall, even if air bubbles are not present?

I don't see how momentary heat would improve the finish, but it may be worth you giving it a try to see if makes any difference.
